Non-current CoursesI have taught the following courses in past semesters and the files involved may not be up-to-date. They remain available primarily for my own reference. Prospective students and others may of course browse these materials; however, they should keep in mind that these courses may change substantially the next time are taught, and may be completely different from the courses as taught by other faculty members. If you are looking for materials on the Spanish language, I would suggest looking at S210 Second-Year Spanish Composition. Works of Miguel de Cervantesin old- and modern-Spanish spelling, based on the 18 volume edition published by Rodolfo Schevill and Adolfo Bonilla prepared in digital form and edited by Fred F. Jehle
The work is being carried out in cooperation with Prof. Eduardo Urbina and the Cervantes 2001 Project, housed at Texas A&M University, a joint collaboration of the Texas A&M Department of Modern and Classical Languages, the Centro de Estudios Cervantinos, the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries. One of its goals is to publish an electronic edition of Cervantes' complete works based on Rodolfo Schevill and Adolfo Bonilla's critical edition, with a full-text search engine. All of the Cervantes texts given here are copyright protected, and are published on the WWW with the permission of the copyright holder. The texts may be used for non-commercial purposes. Permission is given to use these poems and other materials for non-comercial purposes. For the most part the versions of the poems offered here have been adapted from rather old books, and they frequently do not correspond exactly to what is found in some modern textbooks. This collection is still not complete. For example, I would like to add the text for the empty titles given below. In those cases I'm still looking for versions no longer under copyright, or for someone to give me permission to use them. After each poem I have added information on the rhyme and number of syllables per line, with the hope that this will help you appreciate a little more some of the technical aspects of Spanish poetry. If you find errors of any type in these files, please tell me about them.

Fabula de Polifemo y Galatea
Fbula de Polifemo y Galateaby Luis de Gngorain calligraphy and soundLandscape with Polyphemus, by Nicolas Poussin (ca. 1645), Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This version of the poem Fbula de Polifemo y Galatea, by Luis de Gngora, features sound and calligraphy for each of the 63 stanzas. All the files were created by Eric Vogt. In addition to being a Golden Age specialist, Prof. Vogt is a master calligrapher, and the graphic files are an example of his craft; they average about 150 K each.In this exhibit, Prof. Vogt's sound clips for the stanzas will be indicated by the symbol given at the right. Two types of sound files are included at present: 1) regular WAV files, averaging around 900K per stanza, and TruSpeech versions, at around 20K each. The larger files obviously offer much better sound quality and may be reproduced more easily; the TruSpeech versions may need a special player. We're still working on this aspect of the project and making the sound files "stream". Brief message from Dr. Vogt
The calligraphic text of the poem basically constitutes a new edition, especially as regards punctuation, which was sporadic and inconsistent in Golden Age writings. Various editions have been consulted, but Prof. Vogt has used his own critical judgement in producing the calligraphic version. Notes prepared by Prof. Vogt with help from Prof. Jehle on rhetorical and other aspects of the poems are being added. to the stanzas. These represent a distillation of our own knowledge with that of other sources, for example the Oxford Companion to Classical Literature.
