On this course you will learn how to:
1. introduce yourself and ask other's personal information
2. talk about your daily routine
3. talk about friends and family members, and
4. talk about common actions like eating, buying, practicing a sport, hobbies, etc.
After completing this level, you will speak slowly and your understanding of slow-paced speech will be limited; you will have a good pronunciation of vowels. Furthermore, your vocabulary will be limited to most common verbs, nouns and adjectives. With this vocabulary, you should be able to build basic sentences (subject, verb and object, and time expressions).

my, your, his, her, our, their mi, tu, su, su, nuestro, su Possessive adjectives
i.e. Hola, mi nombre es Carlos ¿Cuál es tu nombre?
Explicación - Tarea - Actividades
Explicación: (leer en casa, antes de la clase)
My, your, his, her, our, their are modifiers used to show ownership, as in: my house, your car or her book.Let's see their equivalents in Spanish:
English singular plural
my mi mis
your (of you singular informal) tu tus
your (of you all), his, her, their su sus
our nuestro/a nuestros/as
Examples:
my house = mi casa
my houses = mis casas
your car = tu carro
your cars = tus carros
his book = su libro
his books = sus libros
her pen = su lapicero
her pens = sus lapiceros
our table = nuestra mesa
our tables = nuestras mesas
their computer = su computadora
their computers = sus computadoras
Su, like tu, can mean "your." The difference lies in the degree of formality the speaker wishes to convey. Youuse su in formal speech and tu in informal speech.
Note:
In "tu carro", tu = your as in "your car"
In "tú corres", tú = you as in "you run".
Su has four meanings: his, her, their and your (formal)...
Luis helps his mother. Luis ayuda a su madre.
Carla talks with her boyfriend. Carla habla con su novio.
They look for their sister. Ellos buscan a su hermana.
Your mother looks for your sister. Su madre busca a su hermana.
If the meaning of su is not clear from the context a phrase consisting of de + pronoun may be added to clarifywho is referred to.
I need his book Necesito su libro.
His book or her book? ¿El libro de él o el libro de ella?
Marta and Javier wrote a lot of articles. Marta y Javier escribieron muchos artículos.
Her articles were published in Spain and his articlesin Chile.
Los artículos de ella se publicaron en España y losartículos de él en Chile.
Mi, tu and su do not have masculine and feminine forms. They stay the same, regardless of the gender of thenouns they modify.
mi casa tus coches su casa
mi libro tus plumas sus libros
Nuestro means "our” and has four forms, depending on the noun they modify.
our car = nuestro coche

Capítulo 2: Speaking about Others.
I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they
yo, tú, él, ella, nosotros, nosotras, ustedes, ellos, ellas
Subject pronouns
i.e. Ella es María Rodríguez, mi hermana. El es Pedro, mi hermano.
Explicación - Tarea - Actividades
Explicación: (leer en casa, antes de la clase)
The words "I", "you", "he", "she", "we", "you-all", and "they" have the following corresponding words in Spanish:
I Yo
You
Tu (informal)
Usted (Ud.) (formal)
Ustedes (you all)
He, It El
She, It Ella
We Nosotras/os
They Ellos/as
"Usted" is more formal. "Tú" is more familiar and is used among friends, coworkers, relatives, or when addressing a child.
Speaking to your boss or teacher: usted Speaking to your daughter or friend: tú
Spanish is more gender-specific than English. So, in Spanish, there are two ways to say "we":
nosotroswe (masculine or mixed group)
nosotraswe (feminine)
Translations of I, you, he, she, it, we, you and they are many times omitted in Spanish because the action word shows who is performing the action.
What do | you | study?¿Qué | estudias tú? o ¿Qué | estudias?

Explicación - Tarea - Actividades
Explicación: (leer en casa, antes de la clase) no questions:
In Spanish, you will never use the auxiliary do/does/did when forming yes/no questions. The order of the elements of the question, though, is not important. Look these examples:
Does Pedro study English?¿Estudia Pedro inglés?¿Pedro estudia inglés? ¿Estudia inglés Pedro?
Pedro studies English, doesn’t he?Pedro estudia inglés, ¿no?
Question words:
Interrogative words have a written accent.
Where? ¿Dónde? Where is the bathroom? ¿Dónde esta el baño?

When? ¿Cuándo? When is your birthday? ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?
How much? ¿Cuánto (-a)? How much does it cost? ¿Cuánto cuesta?

Whose telephone is it? ¿De quién es el teléfono?
Why? ¿Por qué? Why are you sad? ¿Por qué estás triste?
Practice: Cover one side and see if you can remember how to say it in Spanish!
*Note:
Qué and Cuál are used only in specific cases...
When we use Qué, we are looking for a concept or a definition. Like:
¿Qué es esto? Esto es un bolígrafo. ¿y esto? Un lápiz.
Cuál is used when we are looking for an answer that can change from one person to another one. Like:
¿Cuál es tu nombre? Mi nombre es Sonia.
¿Cuál es su nombre? Su nombre es Miguel Castro.

In Spanish there are two action words that mean TO BE: Ser and Estar...

Permanent characteristics tend to be permanent in the long run while temporary conditions normally change in the short term (are volatile). Ser and Estar cannot be interchanged.
SER Permanent conditions(Characteristics that tend to last)
ESTAR Temporary conditions (Characteristics that tend to change)
namenationalityprofession/occupationphysical characteristics

Juan is feeling nervous.
The teacher is bored.
Juan está nervioso.

Capítulo 5: Describing Items
dog(s) vs. female dog(s) perro(s) vs. perra(s) gender and number ofnouns
i.e. Las sillas son negras y el escritorio es blanco.
Explicación - Tarea - Actividades
Explicación: (leer en casa, antes de la clase)
In English, words that represent things do not have gender. In Spanish, in contrast, wordsthat represent things are always either masculine or feminine. The word "jardin" (garden), forexample, is always masculine and the word "pelota" (ball) is always feminine.
In Spanish, in most cases, it's very easy to know which word is masculine or feminine. Mostwords that represent things including concepts that end in –o are masculine:
carbank
carrobanco it ends in -o
carsbanks
carrosbancos it ends in -os
Most words that represent things including concepts that end in –a, in contrast, are feminine:
officetable
oficinamesa it ends in -a
offices tables
oficinasmesas it ends in -as
Words that represent people match the natural gender of the person. If it ends in o refers to amale individual or animal. If it ends in a refers to a female individual or animal.
girl = niña
boy = niño
female dog = perra
dog = perro
Words that represent male people sometimes end in consonant. In this case you may add -afor the feminine equivalent.
professor = profesor
(female) professor = profesora
judge = juez
(female) judge = jueza
Especial cases
masculine words that end in -a
the day el día
the map el mapa
the planet el planeta
the language el idioma
the problem el problema
the weather el clima
the program el programa
the system el sistema
feminine words that end in -o
the hand la mano
the radio la radio
feminine words that start with stressed a and end with -a, but use "El"
the pure water el agua pura
the white eagle el aguila blanca
the good soul el alma buena
feminine words that have endings in –cia, -eza/-nza, -ción, -dad, -sis, -umbre, -tad/–tud

the nation la nación
the city la ciudad
the truth la verdad
the happiness la felicidad
the thesis la tesis
the crisis la crisis
the crowd la muchedumbre

Some words never change:
the district attorney = el/la fiscal
the student = el/la estudiante
the singer = el/la cantante
the dentist = el/la dentista
the tourist = el/la turista
More than one
Words in Spanish change to their plural forms by adding the letters -s or -es.
If the singular word ends in a, e, o we make the plural by adding –s and using los, las, unos o unas instead of el, la, un, or una.
Examples
booksphonestables chairs
librosteléfonosmesassillas
If the singular word ends in a consonant or in i or u we make the plural by adding –esand using the plural article
Examples
papersflowers
countriesmonthsmenusrubies
papelesflorespaisesmesesmenúesrubíes
Exceptions
1. When the noun ends in a z we change z to c and add -es:
one thing more than one
pencilfishvoice

2. Nouns of more than one syllable ending in an unstressed vowel plus s do not add a pluralending:

3. When referring to a group of people with males and females, we use the masculine pluralnoun:

Capítulo 10: Speaking about Daily Routines.
I speak... yo hablo... Present (Regular Verbs)
i.e. Los viernes trabajo en otra oficina. Los martes en la noche estudio español.
Explicación - Tarea - Actividades
Explicación: (leer en casa, antes de la clase)
In Spanish action words have two parts: the base (the part that won't change) and an extra part that consists in the ending -ar, -er, and the -ir. This last part will help us classify the action words in three groups: -ar action words, -er action words and -ir action words. Like in English, the action word will change according to the person that is conjugated. Let's see in the following charts how these changes happen.
1.- Action words that end in -AR:
To speak = hablar
To speak Hablar
I speak yo habl-o
you (informal) speak tú habl-a-s
you (formal) speak usted habl-a
he / she speaks él / ella habl-a
we speak nosotros/nosotras habl-a-mos
they / you all speakellos / ellas /
ustedeshabl-a-n
Examples:
I speak Spanish but you speak English. Yo hablo español pero tú hablas inglés.
She sends a letter. Ella envía una carta.
They practice Spanish. Ellos practican español.
2.- Action words that end in -ER or -IR
These two groups will be conjugated sharing the same form. However, -IR action words won't be able to follow the pattern -er with Nosotros. Instead it will be necessary to add an I instead of an E.
In order to conjugate verbs that end in -er or -ir we drop the ending -er or -ir and we add the following endings for each person:
To drink To live Beber Vivir
I drink live yo beb-o viv-o
you (informal)
drink live tú beb-e-s viv-e-s
you (formal)
drink live usted beb-e viv-e
he / she drinks lives él / ella beb-e viv-e
we drink live nosotros/ nosotras
beb-e-mos viv-i-mos
they / you all
drink live ellos/ellas ustedes
beb-e-n viv-e-n
Examples:
She drinks water. Ella bebe agua.
We write a letter. Nosotros escribimos una carta.
They live in Virginia. Ellos viven en Virginia.
There are some ways to memorize the endings...
- The first person (yo) has the same ending for –ar, -er and –ir verbs = o. For example:
Yo habl-o Yo com-o Yo viv-o
- The rest of the persons take the vowel –a for –AR verbs and –e for –ER and –IR verbs (with the exception of the nosotros form for -IR action words that take an -i). For example:
Tú habl-a-s Tú com-e-s
Ellos habl-a-n Ellos com-e-n
Tarea de preparación: (hacer en casa, antes de clase)
1. Study list of the most common action words: -AR action words, -ER/IR action words
2. Read Mi rutina and prepare a similar paragraph. You will give a short presentation of this topic. Bring visual aids or any material that can help you remember. Handle your short composition to your tutor.
Actividades: (en clase)
1. Test how much of the new vocabulary you remember: -AR action words, -ER/IR action words
2. Use the pictures in ¿Qué hace él? and answer your tutor's question using the suggested actions in complete sentences.
3. Talk about what these ordinary people do on a regular basis: Personajes.
4. Talk about your daily routine. Ask your instructor about his/her daily routine. Then, complete La rutina (the chart and the expressions included) and be ready to talk about the activities that the other person does regularly.
