Show students the Cards, and explain to themthat they will help them to remember thesounds that blends make. Remind studentsthat blends are two letters that come togetherto make two sounds. Use the Cards to reviewwith students that some blends, called initialblends, are at the beginning of a word and thatsome blends, called final blends, are at the endof a word. Showing students the Card with thebl blend, remind students that it is the blend bl,as in block, and that it makes the /bl/ sound.Repeat with the other blend Cards.

Small Group Initial and Final Blends CardsPlace students in small groups of four to six.Show a student the front of the first Card, readthe script on the back, and have that studentrepeat the script. For example, if the Card is thebl blend Card, show it to the student; say bl,block, /bl/; and have the student repeat bl, block,/bl/. Show the next Card to the next student

and repeat. Go through the deck a couple oftimes so that students get more exposure tothe blends. As students become used to theroutine, show them the Cards, and encouragethem to tell you the blend, keyword, and soundwithout your prompting. Once a student is ableto tell you the blend and its sound, the keywordis no longer necessary.Variation: After going through the Cards once, tellstudents that you are going to time them tosee how fast they can go through the Cards: Mixup the Cards, and time students; then mix upthe Cards again, and time them again. Keeptrack of each student’s times on the Initial andFinal Blends Assessment Recording SheetReproducible, and praise each student as his orher times improve.

Instruct students to say thename and sound of each blend. As students giveanswers, record each response on the Initial andFinal Blends Assessment Reproducible.
