One of the most in-demand musicians in London’s thriving early-
music scene, John Crockatt plays violin and viola with many of the
world’s foremost period groups.
He holds the position of principal viola with the Amsterdam Ba-
roque Orchestra, Dunedin Consort and Arcangelo and is frequently
invited to guest principal on both violin and viola for such groups
as Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Academy of
Ancient Music. This year saw John joining Concerto Copenhagen
as soloist for their China tour of the Brandenburg concertos. He
has performed as recorded with the English Baroque Soloists,
the Orchestre Révolutionaire et Romantique, the Gabrieli Play-
ers and the Early Opera Company.
As a chamber-musician he has performed widely on both violin and
viola as a member of various baroque and classical ensembles and
from early 2016 has been a member of the London Haydn Quartet,
one of the world’s leading period chamber ensembles. The 2019/20
season sees the quartet on tour in the United States and Canada as
well as the completion of their ongoing, highly acclaimed project to
record the complete string quartets of Joseph Haydn for the Hype-
rion label.

Jonathan Rees has performed across the globe as cellist and gamba player
with the UK's leading historical performance and chamber ensembles. He has
performed as continuo / principal cellist and gamba soloist with the Academy
of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Dunedin Consort,
The Sixteen, ENO, Britten Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, La Nuova Musi-
ca and Solomon's Knot. He has performed with the viol consorts Fretwork
and Phantasm and is a founder member of Newe Vialles. As a chamber musi-
cian and soloist he has performed at the Wigmore Hall, London Baroque
Festival, at the York, Lammermuir, Hastings and Bristol Early Music Festi-
vals and venues across Europe.
Jonathan has given historical performance classes at the Royal Academy of
Music, Guildhall School of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, Cambridge
University and the Royal Northern College of Music. He has devised and led
music workshops and children's concerts for the Orchestra of the Age of En-
lightenment, Brighton Early Music Festival and others. For five years he di-
rected and performed at Bristol's acclaimed annual festival, Really Classical
Relay. He is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
Outside the world of music Jonathan spends a lot of time being a dad, making
compost and growing plants for the sustenance of humans, bees, butterflies
and even the odd lucky greenfly.

Looking to the future…
If you are reading this, you are a significant factor in making
SNEMF 2021 happen. Thank you for being part of the
Great Return to live classical music concerts.
Like other festivals up and down the country, SNEMF has
had to adapt to make the 2021 Festival possible. Naturally,
all concert promoters hope that by summer 2022 we will no
longer be constrained by Covid regulations. However, some
of the changes we have implemented may be worth keeping.
If you are on the SNEMF mailing list, you will receive an
invitation to complete a short survey about various aspects of
the Festival. If you can find time to complete this survey,
your views will be taken into consideration in future planning.
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.
If you are NOT on the SNEMF mailing list but would like to
contribute to the survey, please email:

please’ and your name in the body text.

About Stoke Newington Early Music Festival
Stoke Newington Early Music Festival (SNEMF), founded by Vanessa Coode, is a community event that has
brought the finest Mediaeval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music to Stoke Newington for a quarter of a
century. The Festival’s ‘home’ is The Old Church next to Clissold Park. Built in 1563, this is the only Eliza-
bethan church in London. The warm acoustic and intimate atmosphere of this church make it uniquely suita-
ble for early music. This year, we are also using the larger St Matthias Church , Wordsworth Road and Every-
day Sunshine Café on Barbauld Road.
We are especially grateful to our main sponsors, Bridgewood and Neitzert, for their generous and consistent
support. Our heartfelt thanks go to all our sponsors, benefactors and Friends. Special thanks are due to
Lester Hawksby for managing the festival’s website, Katarina Dordevic for handling the social media accounts,
Rupert Meats of RUDE for the poster design and Liz Robinson for her tireless support.
Many thanks also to the staff and volunteers of The Old Church, to Father David Lambert and Jackie Am-
brosini at St Matthias Church, and to Abi Meats at Everyday Sunshine Café.
