One of the biggest family-friendly cultural arts festival in the UK with an incredible programme of outdoor theatre.
sofestival.org
#SOFESTIVAL2 3
Magna Vitae, Trust for Leisure and Culture welcomes you to SO FestivalI am delighted to bring a distinctively European flavour to this year’s festival with a fabulous programme of spectacular events for all the family.
Lincolnshire’s popular resorts of Mablethorpe and Skegness, like most communities, have had their ups and downs. Despite their many challenges, they each have their individual charm. These two sides of community life are reflected in our 2018 festival programme. We bring together some of the UK’s and Europe’s most acclaimed and diverse artists, who inject these themes into their work. We hope this will encourage debate about the future of the local area.
As an ‘outsider’, it has been a great privilege for me to engage with the people of Mablethorpe and Skegness and an honour to be part of such a great festival. I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in supporting SO Festival 2018.
Jens Frimann Hansen Artistic Director of SO Festival, Helsingør Teater and Passage Festival

The Murphy Effect 1Watt
Skegness 1 September 3.30pm Hildreds Shopping Centre
Skegness 2 September 2pm Hildreds Shopping Centre
The show sees four middle-of-the-road oddballs visit their favourite town spot…and then gradually let go of their inhibitions.
The French-based artists all have eclectic backgrounds in theatre, dance and music and come together in The Murphy Effect in improbable and often unrepeatable ways. Let yourself indulge in letting nonsense take over your daily lives.
10 #SOFESTIVAL 11
Amor Bilbobasso
Skegness 1 September 8pm Tower Gardens, Spot 5
A couple in a ring. They’ve got quite a few years of marriage under their belt, and now their tenderness is made up of cruelty and violence. Today, on edge, they can’t get close without murdering each other. The smallest thing can ignite the situation. Actually everything ignites in their home! Cooking, laundry, vacuuming: all these activities and everyday objects find themselves in the middle of a real domestic and unpredictable bullfight where flame, smoke and coloured flying sparks transform an all-too-common situation into a stunning, giant firecracker. This show is a comedy, a fight, a duel. It’s ambivalent, crazy, playful, savage and tenacious. You’ll never quarrel the same way again!
Hervé Perrin and Delphine Dartus started Bilbobasso in 2006 in France.

Île O Cie Barolosolo
Skegness 1 September 1.30pm & 4.15pm
Tower Gardens, Spot 3
Skegness 2 September 1.30pm & 4.15pm
Tower Gardens, Spot 3
A circus show ankle-deep in water? Why not! Two clowns step into the spotlight in this unique show where the Chinese pole becomes a flute, the water turns into a drum and the stage… is filled with water. While one gets his feet wet, so to speak, the other goes to great lengths to avoid a dunking. In a production over flowing with wildly hysterical shenanigans and adorably poetic scenes, the show will leave the little ones – and their parents – in fits of laughter.
Since 2006, the Barolosolo company has built an unseemly poetic and farcical world diverting our every days items’ purposes. This circus company creates a peculiar closeness with its audience exploiting technical acts in its performances.

A circus tent, which was not shrink-resistant, was thrown in the boiling-hot laundry. The result is a circus tent size 3m by 4m and 3m high. The audience, as well as the artists, have shrunk. Gabriële and Giancarlo did NOT and perform six humorous acts: a tight-rope walker, magician, trapeze, human cannon-ball, Russian pyramid and a lion tamer!
Limited capacity, booking advisable – visit sofestival.org/fazzolettoCirco Ripopolo have travelled throughout Europe with their non-verbal performances since 2003.
Willy and Wally Cocoloco
Mablethorpe 31 August 1.45pm & 4.15pm Promenade
Skegness 1 September 3pm 8pm
Promenade North End Car park
Willy and Wally are up to their necks in mountains of plastic but they carry on clowning regardless. As well as talking a load of rubbish, they perform a multi-dimensional, slapstick comedy that highlights the effects of climate change.
Cocoloco presents raucous, hilarious and ever so slightly bent theatre. This is cabaret performance and street theatre with a twist.

Slapstick and Slaughter Desperate MenSkegness 1 September 3.30pm
7pmCompass GardensTower Gardens Spot 4
Two men recklessly attempt to confront the absurdity of war in just 35 minutes, using their bodies, their voices and the surrealist toolbox of DADAism. Playful, physical and blackly comedic, Slapstick and Slaughter examines how the barbaric chaos of World War One manifested itself in the nihilistic, nonsensical art that grew from it. This theatre show splatters big ideas on a small canvas, exploring art’s reaction to the war’s wholesale destruction of lives, the old order and old hypocrisies and finding echoes in equally absurd modern conflicts.
The UK’s Desperate Men’s mischievous, warm hearted work invites audiences to ask serious questions about the world.
