Social Factors is the connection between

economic activity and social life. Social

economic factors, often called

socioeconomic factors, are used to equate

social life and economic activity. Included

are such aspects as education, wealth and

employment.

• It is thought of as the higher your

education the better your social

standing. For example, a physician has

the opportunity for more impact on

society than a high school dropout.

• Private schools

• Public schools

• Pre schools

• Greene county high school graduation rate is 80% (snapshot 2010)

• Is higher education available?• Community College• Universities

• Ex. 12% of those older than 25 yrs have a 4 yr college education in Greeneville.

• Healthier populations that capitalize on

public health initiatives (using public and

private sector dollars) inspire healthy

behaviors, which results in lower death

rates.

• The condition of being sound in body,

mind, or spirit.

Examples:

• Chlamydia rate in Greene county was 138 per 100,000 (snapshot 2010).

• Teen pregnancy rate? 62 per 1,000 for females age 15-19 (snap shot 2010).

• Greene county is rated 41 out of 95 in

the state of TN for health

outcomes(snapshot 2010) and the

estimated household income for

Greeneville is $31,198 in 2009 (city-

data).

• Areas of poverty in the community

• Support programs and outreach for

those that live in poverty

• Food banks, soup kitchens, and local

ministries that contribute to those living

in poverty.

• Ex. One in Greeneville called Food

Bank

• What jobs are available?• Disability Percentage• Unemployment rate • Transportation available

• Example: Greene county unemployment rate is 9%(snap shot 2010)

• Substance abuse and it’s impact on a community and it’s population.

• Are treatment centers available?

• Is Community social support available and easily accessible ?

• AA (alcoholics anonymous) or NA (narcotics anonymous)

• Caring and Sharing Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Lunch Bunch Eastview Recreation Center ,(AA Open

Meetings)

• St. James Episcopal Church and White Block Building holds open meetings one to two days a week (NA Open

Meetings)

Ex. Approximately 21% of people in Greene County have no social support. (Snapshot 2010)

National Centers for Victims of Crime defines

domestic violence as “the willful intimidation,

assault, battery, sexual assault or other abusive

behavior perpetrated by one family member,

household member, or intimate partner against

another.” (ncvc, 2010)

• Does the community have any outreach programs for abused women?

• A collection site for used cell phones that will be used to supply battered women with a phone?

• What are the statistics for domestic violence 911 calls and the rate of conviction?

• What type of system do local hospitals and emergency response personnel use to screen for domestic violence?

Ex. Greene county hospitals use a short questionnaire that is filled out on admission.

World Health Organization defines Violence as

"the intentional use of physical force or power,

threatened or actual, against oneself, another

person, or against a group or community, that

either results in or has a high likelihood of

resulting in injury, death, psychological harm,

maldevelopment, or deprivation.“ (WHO, 2010)
