What is capacity?

Capacity is the amount of liquid that an object can hold.

We can use metric or customary units to measure capacity.

Today we will be focusing on the customary units of capacity!

Customary Units of Capacity-Ounce

• ounces are very small units of customary capacity.

• One ounce is about two tablespoons full. This is larger than one milliliter.

• You should be familiar with ounces already, as we use them often in the US.

Customary Units of Capacity-Cup

• 1 cup = 8 ounces (oz)• You would use cups to measure the

amount of liquid in a cereal bowl.

• A quart is equal to 32 ounces.

• 32 ounces= 4 cups or 2 pints

Remember:8 ounces = 1 cup2 cups = 1 pint

Measuring Customary Capacity

• We will be doing a similar activity in class as we did yesterday.

• Today we are going to be focusing on customary capacity.

Record this chart in your journal or use recording sheet. Notice that the units we are using today are different!
