FROM MY HEART TO YOURS
The Renew & Rebuild funds have been allocated for a few of the necessary maintenance and renovation projects
such as replacing the flat roof, a new sound system, lighting, new carpeting, pew cushions, re-doing the sanctuary and
confessionals in the church, refurbishing the landscape in front of the church, re-sealing the parking lot, and
updating the HVAC for the church, rectory and St. Francis Hall. I have an update about one of the above maintenance
items, which is ongoing, our Water System.
Water System: In April 2019 the Department of Health instructed St Patrick’s to convert our existing water
filtration system to a chlorination based system. This project was identified as our first Renew & Rebuild initiative.
With the assistance of the Archdiocese we selected contractors to design and install the new system. We are now in the final
stages of this project. The new piping etc. has been installed and the testing required by the Dept. of Health has been
completed. We expect to receive certification from the Dept. of Health within the next few weeks which will allow us to
switch over to the new process. At that time the “Do Not Drink” signs will be removed and everyone should feel free to
drink the water in both buildings.
We are in the process of forming two important committees.
(1) Building and Grounds Committee: I have asked several of our friends in the parish community to be part of this.
If anyone with that background is interested in being part of this, I welcome you to contact the parish office. The committee
will work along with and in consultation with the parish staff, Parish Council and Finance Committee. The most important
task of this team is to periodically walk around and inspect the church grounds and the buildings in order to make
recommendations and to assist the parish in keeping itself as a safe and maintained space.
Any person or company who works on the parish property and is not an employee of the parish must have my
approval, sign a Hold Harmless Agreement and have provided the office with their Certificate of Insurance before the work
begins.
(2) Safety and Security Committee: Since 2018, parishes have been encouraged to be prepared to face potential
emergencies. We have talked about it many times. The Parish Council on Feb 4 decided to form a committee that is de-
signed to deal with various emergencies: fire, severe weather, vandalism, gun violence, acts of domestic terrorism and the
threat of such actions. In a meeting of priests of the Northern Westchester and Putnam Counties, that took place after the
vandalism at St. Patrick’s in Yorktown a few weeks ago, we have all been advised to take a serious look at the safety and
security measures that are in place at our parish facilities. Though nothing has happened at our Church, we are in need of a
committee of experts from our community, who regularly worship or help with the CCD program, to assist in developing
preventive and precautionary procedures.
We are in the process of forming an initial committee with parish leadership and those who are interested in
helping. The first step for the committee will be to meet with first responders in our area – that is, law enforcement, fire and
medical/EMS personnel – and to seek their cooperation in preparing a security and safety plan. The plan will include how to
deal with any actual or anticipated threat of violence. A crucial component in developing a security and safety plan includes
a security assessment to identify and evaluate any known or potential threat to our facility. Currently we don’t face any such
situations. We cannot live in fear, but as these times demand, we should put procedures in place to safeguard ourselves.
Remember, “If you see something, say something.” As this process evolves, I will write in more detail on how to look at
this not as an inconvenience or panic-generating idea, but as something that we need to do to keep abreast of the times that
we live in. Let us plan, to be prepared, in order to be better safe than sorry.
With all the above in place we trust in the Lord and say as the Psalmists say:
“The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever more.”
Psalms 121
Stay tuned to the Holy Spirit
May God bless the whole world!
