What is a Simple Machine? A simple machine has

few or no moving parts.

Simple machines make work easier by changing the amount or the direction of the force used to do work.

There are six types of simple machines.

wheel and axlepulley incline planewedgesscrew lever

Wheel and Axle

a wheel that turns on a post to help move things quickly and easily

Gears are a form of wheels and axles

Examples: doorknob, steering wheel, and a screwdriver

Pulley made of rope and string

wound around a reel to change the direction of a force.

A pulley needs a rope, chain or belt around the groove to make it do work

Examples: crane, fishing pole, clothes line, and a flagpole

Inclined Plane An inclined plane is

a flat surface that is higher on one end

Inclined planes make the work of moving things easier

Examples: ramp, and stairs

Wedge two inclined planes

together used to raise an object or split an object.

Wedges are used to split things.

Examples: knife, and an ax

Screws an inclined plane

wrapped around a pole or shaft that is used to hold materials together or drill holes

The inclined plane allows the screw to move itself when rotated.

Examples: drill bit, and screws

Lever made of a board or

bar set on top of a fulcrum.

it is used to lift weight

Examples: seesaw, crowbar, baseball bat, and a rake

Two simple machines, make a compound Machine two or more simple

machines working together

Examples: bike and a car

Lesson: Students will have to make a kid inspiration chart then exchange with a partner for assessment.

Lesson: Students will have to make a bar graph of how many of each simple machine they found in their group.
