Sports Physical Exams are a must. Allathletesshouldhaveaphysicalexamandifindicatedaheartexambeforepreseasontrainingbegins.Aphysicalexamcandetectaheartmurmurwhileanelectrocardiogram(ECG)canidentifyunderlyingcardiacconditionsthatcancauseseriousandsometimesfatalcomplicationsduringstrenuousactivity.ThisisespeciallyimportantintheTexasheat,whichaddstothephysicaltollofaworkout.Anormalphysicalexamwillhelptoidentifyanylingeringinjuriesorproblemareasthatcouldjeopardizeanathlete’shealth.
Students should be in shape before strenuous practice begins. It isessentialthatathletesarealreadytrainingandinshapebeforethestrenuouspracticebegins.Athleteswhogo intopracticesunpreparedwillputunnecessaryandevendangerousstrainontheirbodies.Ifthestudentathletehasnotmaintainedregularphysicalactivityduringthesummerorespeciallyintheweeksleadinguptopractice,itisimportanttoinformthecoachandencouragetheathletetoeaseslowlyintotheactivity.
Warm-ups and cool-downs go a long way in preventing injury. Thereareseveralwaysathletescanpreventinjuryastheygetintopeakphysicalcondition.Joggingordynamicstretchingbeforeaworkoutdecreasesthelikelihoodofmuscleandjointinjuries.Starteveryworkoutwithawarm-upthatemphasizesthemusclegroupsthatwillbeusedmostintheworkout.Anappropriatecool-downhelpsthebodyrecoverfasterfromworkoutsandalsodecreasesthechanceoffutureinjury.Thebestwaytodothisisthroughaslowjogorsimilaraerobicactivity.Theworkoutshouldendwithstaticstretchestoloosenupmusclesthatwereusedintheworkout.
Hydration is key.Theimportanceofhydrationduringexercisecannotbestressedenough.Athleteswhoaregoingintotheirworkoutsunpreparedfortheheatandlevelof intensitywillespeciallyneedtopayattentiontosymptomsofdehydrationandheatexhaustion.Athletesappearing
exceptionallysluggish,disoriented,orconfusedcouldlikelybesufferingfromheatexhaustionandshouldbecooleddownimmediatelyandgivenwater.Ifthesesymptomspersistorarenothandledappropriately,theathlete’sconditionmayworsenandleadtoseveredehydrationorheatstroke.Coaches,athletictrainersandstudentsshouldhaveanemergencyplaninplacetodealwithheatillness.Ifanathletelosesconsciousnessorfaints,movehimorhertoacoolerareaandcall911immediately.Sportsdrinkscanbeusedduringlong,highintensityworkouts,butshouldnotbeasubstituteforwater.
Nutrition can make or break performance.Nutritioncanmakeorbreakanathlete’sperformancewellbeforeapracticebegins.Supplementsarenotaviablesubstitutionforhealthyeatinghabits.Whenitcomestocarbohydrates,athletesshouldbeeatingwholegrainssuchasbrownrice,oatmeal,andwholewheatbread.Leanproteinshouldalsobeconsumedateachmeal.Goodexamplesofleanproteinsareeggwhites,Greekyogurt,peanuts,fish,andchicken.Freshfruitsandvegetablescontainnutrientsthatarevitalforinjurypreventionandrecovery.Thekeyistobalanceallofthesefoodsandmaintainhealthyhabitsoffofthefield.
Use your head.AccordingtotheAmericanJournalofSportsMedicine,therateofconcussionsinU.S.highschoolathletesmorethandoubledbetween2005and2012.Typicallycausedbybump,blowor jolt totheheadorbody,concussionscancausebrainbleeds,traumaticbraininjuryorseizuresandcanaffectfuturebrainfunctionandcognition.Players–especiallythoseplayinghigh-impactsports–needtobeverycautiousandtakeprecautionstoprotecttheirheads,includingapre-seasonbaselineconcussionexamconductedbyaspecialistwithextensivetraininginthediagnosisandmanagementofconcussion.Ifaconcussionoccurs,itisimportantthattheathleteundergoapostinjuryevaluationassoonaspossible,whichcanbecomparedtotheirpreinjurybaselinetodetermineanyeffectsfollowingtheinjury.UnderTexasstatelaw,anyschool-ageathletewhoexhibitssignsandsymptomsofconcussionmustberemovedfromplayimmediatelyandisnotallowedtoparticipateingamesorpracticesuntiltheathletehasbeenevaluatedandgivenclearancebyaphysician.Alistofconcussionspecialistsandthereturn-to-playguidelinescanbefoundontheConcussionProgrampageatironman.memorialhermann.org.
