SHE Code 2: “Safe Movement of Vehicles on STFC

Sites”

Why a Vehicle Management safety code?

• The movement of cars, bicycles, delivery vans, and fork lift trucks on larger STFC sites presents real hazards for both drivers & pedestrians.

• The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, 1992, requires the safe separation of pedestrians and vehicles on sites, and especially where vehicles enter buildings.

• Site Vehicle Transport risk assessments are a requirement of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999.

Basic requirements• Site Estate managers should ensure that a Site Vehicle

Transport risk assessment is in place and maintained.• Where vehicles must enter buildings, managers should ensure

that they do so without endangering the safety of people within the building.

• Where a large project may block or impede pedestrian or traffic routes, then alternative measures to ensure safe movement of people and free access for Emergency Vehicles should be put in place.

• The Highway Code should be followed at all times on STFC sites.

• Report defects – potholes etc.• Pedestrians should use marked routes where possible.

How is vehicle safety managed on your site?
