STAYING AWAKE SHAVUOS NIGHT

It is written in the Zohar that the chassidim ha’rishonim stayed awake

the entire night (Shavuos night) and learned Torah. And this has

become the practice of many lomdim.

And it is written in the Shulchan Aruch of the Arizal, “It should be

known that anyone who does not sleep at all on this night, and the

main thing is that one is learning Torah, it is guaranteed for him that

he will complete the year, and no harm will befall him.” 5

The Magen Avraham writes that the reason for this, according to the

simple understanding of it, is that the Jewish nation slept the entire

night (prior to the event of Matan Torah) and Hashem needed to

awaken them to receive the Torah, like it says in the Medrash, and

therefore we need to rectify this.
