DOMAIN NAME SERVICES (DNS) AND SHAREPOINT
Setting up a domain to access SharePoint can be easy provided some thought and planning are applied up front.
When you purchase a SharePoint subscription through TelePacific, you were asked to provide a domain name for your SharePoint site. Your chosen domain name is automatically associated with the new SharePoint site when we build your services in our Cloud Services platform. Your domain also displays during the Add a New SharePoint Site function in you Cloud Services Control Panel.
As mentioned in the getting started guide, DNS is simply a database that links meaningful names (known as host names), such as http://www.microsoft.com, to a specific IP address, such as 192.168.124.1. This allows your domain to “point” to a specific location on the internet for email and webhosting purposes and allows a given domain to be used for both email and webhosting.
SharePoint uses the Address Records (A Records) in DNS
A records point the hostname to its matching IP address. It’s easier for humans to remember alphabets than pure numbers, the A record is the DNS entry which accomplishes this task. A few examples of A records are:
dnsgoodies.com 206.113.12.227
test.dnsgoodies.com 209.159.62.152
“A” records pertain to Web servers and web hosting. Hosted Microsoft SharePoint acts like a website. It can be assigned a domain and an associated URL and access to the site is controlled by you.
Many customers use a primary dedicated domain such as www.customername.com for their SharePoint site address. However, if your primary domain is already being used as access to a primary web site that perhaps you or someone else is hosting, then you may have created a subdomain off your primary domain such as www.share.customerneame.com, This subdomain can provide browser access to your new Cloud Services Hosted SharePoint site just as easily as a primary domain, provided you point your domain or subdomain to the IP address we assign you. This IP address is found in your Cloud Services configuration and is accessible via your Cloud Services Control Panel. Below is an example of the IP address information. Please take a minute to locate this information for your account now in the Control Panel and write it down for reference purposes.
Configure/Point Your DNS to TelePacific Cloud Services: Schedule time to work with your DNS administrator to change your A records using the information provided in this section. Note that there are two possible environments so please refer to the information.
DNS Migration – TelePacific Hosted DNS: If TelePacific is your DNS provider TelePacific will make the changes to your DNS on your behalf to point to your SharePoint Service (“A” Record). To request these changes please call the TelePacific Reliability and Repair Operations Center (RROC) at (1-‐855-‐444-‐8722) and let them know the following information:
• Let the TelePacific service representative know that you are a new Cloud Hosted SharePoint customer, and that your DNS is currently hosted by TelePacific. They will request your account information from you to verify that you are a TelePacific customer.
• Request that the TelePacific service representative open a ticket indicating that your DNS A records need to be pointed to the IP address we provided you, and which you located in your configuration in the Cloud Services Control Panel (see above)
DNS Migration Non-‐TelePacific Hosted DNS: If your DNS provider is not TelePacific: If you use another commercial provider of DNS such as Network Solutions or GoDaddy, you will be responsible for making your own changes to the DNS records to point your SharePoint Service (“A” Record) to the IP address we provided you, and which you located in your configuration in the Cloud Services Control Panel (see above).
Please proactively call your DNS provider if you need help or have questions about changing your DNS records.
Once you have pointed your DNS to the new IP address you are ready to activate and create and test your SharePoint site via the Cloud Services Control Panel.
