gallery nine5 is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Seth Wulsin.
Seth Wulsin works with space, light and time. A vast number of his profoundly eloquent pieces are
large-scale sculptural installation works. Combining surface and depth, the layered fiberglass
and spray paint installations explore the spatial and emotional potential of portraiture. The works
are comprised of various screen grids that combine to produce ethereal, three-dimensional
visages.
In 2006, the artist created 16 Tons, an eighteen storey sculptural installation in the Cárcel de
Caseros. An Argentinean prison notorious for the brutal conditions in which its inmates were
kept, the almost total lack of sunlight meant that many of the prisoners suffered from acute
vitamin D deficiencies. Using sixteen tons of glass, Wulsin chiseled forty-eight human faces and
installed them in the window hollows. The shifting light of day created endless effects on the
faces gazing out towards the street. Wulsin’s technical mastery and sophisticated, sensitive
approach to conceptual art sets him far apart from his contemporaries. John Beardsley, a senior
lecturer in landscape architecture at Harvard University, commended Wulsin on the installation,
saying ‘the sculpture engages with history in a critical way’.
After studying briefly at Yale University, Wulsin withdrew to perform as a musician. Between 2003
and 2005, he worked with sculptor Ray King, helping to create and install his large-scale public
sculptures. Wulsin has exhibited extensively, including at the DUMBO Arts Festival, Brooklyn and
ArteBA, Buenos Aires. He has been awarded numerous prizes, artist fellowships and residencies
from the Threefold Foundation, the Dumbo Arts Festival, the Thendara Foundation, the Peter S.
Reed Foundation and El Basilisco, Argentina.
Wulsin has been invited to lecture at various institutions both in the U.S. and abroad. Recently,
this has included speaking engagements at Yale University; the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst; and the Universidad Tadeo Lozano, Colombia.
