My Healthy Preteen

“Stop for a moment, and consider all that you have learned over the last 9 months. Now think about your mental image of a healthy preteens. Using the Play Dough, sculpt an object that depicts or relates to your mental image.”

We all need to learn how to effectively and positively handle

those times when we do not follow our intended plans.

Lapses in our plan for changing behaviors are a short-term return

to our former behaviors.

A relapse is a total return to former less healthy behaviors

and attitudes.

What typically can cause a detour or lapse in your plan for healthy behavior change?

• Emotions – feeling stressed, lonely, bored, overconfident

• Situations – daily temptations, break from routine, holidays, drinking

• Lack of self-esteem; negative self-talk, self-blame• Lack of positive reinforcement

What strategies can you use for Dealing with Detours to add to your SMART plan?

• View a SMART plan as a guide, a draft• Successful behavior change can be achieved if

learning from your detours or lapses is the goal, rather than giving up and giving in

• Keep in mind how we learn and that it is a process.

Have a SMART plan in place for situations when you are most

likely to detour from your plan, especially when you are just starting to make a change.

Learn to identify and substitute healthy thought patterns from destructive thought patterns that limit your success.

Finding support from family and friends can

be critical.

Recognize what emotions trigger detours from your plans.
