Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that

integrates meaningful community service with

instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and

strengthen communities.

I have had the opportunity to be involved in many service learning

opportunities. I was very involved with community service projects during my Senior year of highschool and continued being

involved on through my Freshman year of college.

Completing 10 hours of service learning is an essential part of being in the

Freshman Year Experience Program.

Being a member of Phi Mu has also allowed me to have the opportunity to complete

community service. We are required to complete 10 hours of

community service each semester.

Picking up trash for Adopt-A-Highway

My most time consuming community service project this year was the Volleyball

Tournament for Children’s Miracle Network hosted by Phi Mu.

Children's Miracle Network is the alliance of premier children's hospitals. Every year, Children's Miracle Network hospitals treat 17 million children for every disease and

injury imaginable. Children's Miracle Network hospitals impact the lives of more

children than any other children's organization in the world.

Phi Mu raised over $11,000 for Children’s

Miracle Network. It was a great success..

Service learning is important because it is helping our community

for the better. Our few hours of service can make a huge difference, and in some cases, may even save a life. It is important to take part in

service learning to help you grow as an individual and helps you learn

not to take life for granted.

•Improves the community•Improves self esteem•Looks good on a resume•Helps you learn the relevance and importance of work•Develops responsibility•Meet new people•Improves interpersonal skills•Gains an understanding for others

Benefits I received from my Service Learning:

Overall, my service learning experience was a good one. I

enjoyed what I did and learned a lot from it. A trash pick up can be a little grungy at times, and even though the volleyball tournament was rained out and relocated in the elementary school’s gym, it

all worked out in the end.

My favorite thing was working at the Volleyball tournament. My job was to

help people participating in the tournament find a place to park. I ended

up helping in other areas such as the concession stand and picking up trash. I

want to continue doing community service because I feel like it is helping me

grow as an individual and become a better person.
