Brainstorming Meeting on Horti - Millets ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) and ICAR‐Division of Horticultural Sciences is Jointly organized one‐day “Brainstorming meeting on Horti‐Millets” on 13 September, 2019 at IIMR‐Hyderabad. This meeting mainly focused on researchable issues and collaborative programs and way forward. DDG Crop Science graced the occasion along with Dr. T Janaki Ram, ADG Horticulture ‐ ICAR, New Delhi. Directors of ICAR‐ Horticultural Research Institutes ‐ Dr. VP Sharma, ICAR‐DMR, Solan; Dr. S Uma, ICAR‐NRCB‐ Coimbatore; K Nirmal Babu, ICAR‐IISR‐ Calicut; Dr. Manoj Singh, ICAR‐DOGR, Pune; Dr. Jyotsna Sharma, NRC‐Pomegranate, Solapur; Dr. PL Saroj, ICAR‐CIAH, and Principal Scientists – Dr. Abha Singh, ICAR‐CISH‐Lucknow; Dr. Ravi Bhat, ICAR‐CPCRI‐Kasargod; Dr. Sudhir Singh, ICAR‐ IIVR‐Varanasi; Dr. RB Tiwari, ICAR‐IIHR, Bengaluru and scientist from ICAR‐DCR, Puttur; Dr. J Aravind, ICAR‐ CPRI, Shimla Dr. Vijay Prakash, ICAR‐CIAH, Bikaner and scientists from above institutes besides Scientists from ICAR‐IIMR actively participated in the deliberations.
Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR in his introductory remarks pointed out that the value‐addition programmes in different ICAR institutes are running parallel in isolation. There is a need for cross learning and joint launch of products. Based on the expertise each one has there is good scope for joint learning. Dr. T. Janakiram, ADG (Hort), ICAR thanked the initiative of the IIMR and Directors of Horticulture institutes for coming together. He opined that the session is going to add new dimension in the research of Horticulture institutes and IIMR. Though the Horticulture institutes are having several value‐added products, IIMR provides full technological integration and value chain development for emulating by others. Better value‐added products can be brought out by integrating millets.
Dr. VP Sharma, Director, DMR in his initial remarks mentioned that mushrooms and millets complement each other and suggested for joint product development to address Vitamin D deficiency issues. Dr. KN Babu, Director, IISR complimented IIMR for the successful value chain development and remarked that a lot can be learnt from IIMR with respect to business plan development. Dr. RB Tiwari, Principal Scientist, IIHR presented the strategy planned on the integration of food technologies on millets, fruits and vegetables. Mrs. Pushpa Chetan Kumar, Scientist, IIHR presented the researchable issues and way forward for horti‐millet products. Dr. Sudhir Singh, Principal

Scientist, Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi presented shelf life enhancing technologies, minimal processing and various ready‐to‐cook or easy‐to‐cook products already developed at IIVR. Dr. E. Jayashree, Principal Scientist, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut, presented the different spices available and forms of spices used, important properties of spices, important flavour compounds from spices. Dr. Kalyani Gorrepati, Scientist, Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Pune presented the beneficial properties of onion and garlic and health benefits, need for processing, types of post‐harvest losses, etc.
This event was coordinated by Dr. B Dayakar Rao, EO, Nutrihub in association with Dr. K Hariprasanna, B Venkatesh Bhat and others.
Model Training Course on Good Agricultural Practices
ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR) organized 8 days Training programme entitled “Model Training Course on Good Agricultural Practices for biotic stress
management and productivity improvement in Millets as Nutricereals” for Agriculture Officers of different State Agriculture Departments from 23 to 30 September 2019. A total of twenty‐seven trainees from state agriculture departments of Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and, Directorate of Oilseeds Development (DAC&FW, GOI), Hyderabad and Directorate of Jute Development (DAC&FW, GOI), Kolkata, West Bengal participated in this training course. The major objective of this course was to enhance competency of the field extension functionaries of major as well as new millets growing states.
Dr. IK Das, Principal Scientist and Course Director welcomed the participants, chief guest and IIMR scientists in the inaugural session of the training programme. Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scientist and Course Coordinator briefed about the programme. The chairman of the inaugural session, Dr. SS Rao, Director‐in‐charge, ICAR‐IIMR mentioned about the objectives of the training programme and it will be a great opportunity to extension functionaries to gain knowledge on the latest technological innovations and
acquire skill in millets production and its value‐addition. Dr. G Shyam Prasad, Course Coordinator also stressed on the importance and scope of biotic stress management in millets cultivation in order to enhance farmers’ income. Overall, the training programme broadly covered the technological aspects of biotic stress management in millets, improved millets production technologies, appropriate extension approaches, preparation of value‐added products, forage and sweet sorghum. Besides, the scientists from IIMR, a few experts from outside organizations, ICRISAT, NIPHM, UAS, Bengaluru, ICAR‐RCER, Patna, ICAR‐NAARM and ICAR‐IIOR, Hyderabad also addressed the participants as resource persons. The trainees visited research facilities and field demonstration at IIMR, NIPHM and ICRISAT. They were also provided with reading materials, a compilation of the subjects covered in the training, and also publications of IIMR on selected topics. Dr. Prabhakar, Ex‐Project Coordinator, AICRP on Small Millets, Bengaluru was the Chief Guest of the valedictory session and distributed the certificates to the participants. This training programme was sponsored by Directorate of Extension (DOE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Dr. IK Das was the Course Director and Drs. RR Chapke and G Shyam Prasad were the course coordinators. Training Course on Seed Production, Certification, Processing and Quality Assurance in Field Crops
ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR) Organized 15 days Training Course on Seed Production, Certification, Processing and Quality Assurance in Field
Crops from 23 September 2019 to 7 October, 2019. There were 16 participants including Scientists, Assistant Professors and technical Officers working in ICAR institutes and SAUs. During the inaugural session, Dr. T Pradeep, Director (Seed), PJTSAU, Hyderabad was the Chief Guest. At the outset, Dr. SS Rao, Director‐In‐Charge, IIMR welcomed the participants and briefed them about the purpose of organizing this training programme. Dr. B Venkatesh Bhat, Pr. Scientist and Course Coordinator presented the overview of the sessions and planning of lectures and Seed Production,

Certification, Processing and Quality Assurance in Field Crops.
Start-up Ignition program
Nutrihub – IIMR conducted “Start‐up Ignition Program” to make Agripreneurs kick‐start their entrepreneurial journey. This is a one‐day program, being conducted on every fourth Saturday of the month, coordinated by the team of Dr. Ravi Kumar. For the month of September,
this was conducted on 28th September 2019 and the event saw a whooping number of 47 participants across India. The participants have been educated about entrepreneurship opportunities in millets sector and they visited primary processing centre where cleaning, dehulling and separation process takes place and centre of excellence where all millet related innovations are experimented. To further understand about commercialization of various products the participants were given opportunity to visit secondary processing centre where value addition, packaging, branding is done, also participants had a session on innovative idea and various incubation services offered by Nutrihub. The program concluded with distribution of certificates to the participants by Dr. Sangappa. Seed distribution to the farmers
Seed of high yielding dual purpose rabi sorghum varieties Phule Revathi and M 35‐1 were distributed to
about 89 farmers of Sarpanaplly village, Dharur Mandal in Vikarabad district of Telangana state on 17 September, 2019. These farmers were motivated
towards millets cultivation through awareness programmes, exposure visits, personal interactions and trainings organized by ICAR‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) round the year. Dr. B Subbarayudu, Principal Investigator, NABARD project, coordinated and organized this event. This programme was undertaken by ICAR‐ IIMR, Hyderabad as a part of the Project entitled on “Promotion of Millets Technology and Entrepreneurial Skills among farmers and youth of Vikarabad district in Telangana” Sponsored by NABARD.
150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi celebrated
ICAR‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) observed the ‘Swachhta hi Seva” campaign between 11
September to 02 October 2019 with the theme of Plastic Waste management to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. All staff members including Scientists, Technical, Administrative, Contractual staff, RAs, SRFs and students took the Swachhta pledge, and participated in the campus cleanliness drive focusing especially on banning the use of Single Use Plastic with great zeal, enthusiasm and patriotism. To mark this occasion, various programs were organized at IIMR including competitions to school children, debates, lectures besides regular cleanliness programmes. Prizes were distributed to the winners.
Swachatha Pakhwada Programme at Angadi Chittampally: ICAR‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad, initiated Swachatha Pakhwada Programme on 30 September, 2019 at Angadi Chittampally village of
Ranga Reddy district in Telangana. The farmers and scientists of IIMR took the cleanliness pledge and participated in sweeping of village roads. Dr. Ch.

Shashidhar Reddy motivated and sensitized the rural youth and farmers about the Swachhata Pakhwada programme and importance of cleanliness for betterment of societal health. Dr. B. Subbbarayudu coordinated this event.
Cooking with Millets
Nutrihub – IIMR conducted “Cooking with millets” on 21 September 2019. The program attracted 22 participants from 4 different states including Cooking professionals, Representatives of Food Manufactures, cooking
enthusiasts and Housewives. This one‐day program, being conducted on every third Saturday of the month, coordinated by the team of Dr. Ravi Kumar. The program started with Introduction to the program followed by showing the making of 8 food items from different cuisines. For the first time, participants were given opportunity to cook at our Centre of Excellence to show their culinary skills. “Ammamma chitkalu” has also been introduced this time in the program which received rave response from the participants. Dr. B. Dayakar Rao, CEO, Nutrihub encouraged all the participants to look forward for setting up business start‐ups in millets and told them that full support will be given by Nutrihub, IIMR.
Exhibition stall at CCSHAU-Hisar
ICAR – IIMR organized exhibition stall during National Workshop on Production, Processing and Value addition of Nutri – cereals (millets) on 16 September, 2019 held at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar. The workshop was organized by Directorate of Millets Development, Jaipur in collaboration with Department of Genetics and plant
breeding, CCSHAU, Hisar and ICAR – Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad. The one‐day workshop was inaugurated by Shri. Vivek Agarwal, JS (Crops & Post‐Harvest Management) Department of agriculture, cooperation and farmers’ welfare. Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi, Director, ICAR – IIMR was the guest of honor for the event and Dr. B. Dayakar Rao, PS & CEO, Nutrihub delivered talk on Entrepreneurship & Value chain in millets. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, Dr. Ravi Vemula, PRO and Dr. Amarnath Reddy, Plant Manager, Nutrihub participated and Coordinated the exhibition stall. More than 1000 farmers, entrepreneurs and delegates visited the stall and appreciated the efforts of IIMR.

Dignitaries Shri H. Arun Kumar, IAS, Special Commissioner, Government of Andhra Pradesh visited Indian Institute
of Millets Research on 21 September, 2019 to meet the scientific fraternity to formulate a strategy for collaboration with the Government of Andhra Pradesh with regard to the establishment of 'Millet Board'. At the outset, Dr. SS Rao Director in‐charge IIMR, briefed him about the institute’s research and development activities including improved millets cultivation. Dr. B Dayakar Rao, CEO, IIMR‐Nutrihub explained about technology developed and role of IIMR for increasing the benefits from millets cultivation.
Drs. CV. Ratnavathi, C Aruna, B Venkatesh Bhat, K Hariprasanna, R Venkateshwarlu, Avinash Singode and Sangappa participated in the deliberations. Sh. Arun Kumar also visited Genebank, Centre of Excellence, other processing facilities and Nutrihub. He also had an interaction with select start‐ups at Nutrihub on millet promotion in Andhra Pradesh.
Gateway International School Students
A group of 53 school students of IX & X Standard along with two teachers from Gateway International School,
Rajendranagar, Hyderabad visited ICAR‐IIMR on 11 September, 2019 as a part of their agriculture curriculum and exposure visit to research institute. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, briefed them about Millets processing, value addition and health benefits. Students were keen to know the career opportunities in Agriculture education. Later, Dr. Amasiddha, briefed about millets production and R& D activities of the institute and visited Millet Field. Students also visited Millet Primary Processing unit and food processing lab with Dr. Ravi Vemula, PRO, ICAR‐IIMR. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist coordinated this visit.
MANAGE Trainees
A group of about 13 trainees including scientists, Professors and other officials from KVKs, SAUs, NGOs and entrepreneurs visited ICAR – IIMR on 18 September, 2019 to understand the technologies developed by the institute and activities at our incubation centre. They were attending the training programme organized by

MANAGE, Hyderabad and visited this institute as a part of their training curriculum. Dr. Sangappa, scientist briefed them about Millets technologies and institute activities. Later they visited to Primary Processing Unit and Food Processing lab with Dr. Ravi Vemula, PRO. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist Coordinated this Visit
TNAU, Students
Students from Killikulam: A group of 46 B.Sc. (Agri.) students along with 3 Assistant Professors Drs. V Mohane, Rao Keluskar and Revathy, from JSA College of Agriculture and Technology, Podiyur, Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu visited IIMR on 16 September, 2019. Students from Karaikudi: A group of 71 B. Sc. (Agri), final year Students along with 4 staff from SBACRF, college of Agriculture affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Karaikudi District, Tamil Nadu State visited ICAR – IIMR on 11 September, 2019.
Students from Toothukudi: A total of 111 B. Sc. (Agri). final year Students from RVS college of Agriculture, Thoothukudi from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, visited ICAR – IIMR on 11 September, 2019 as a part of their all India educational tour to various research institutes of ICAR.
Dr. Sangappa, Coordinated the above events with the help of Nutrihub Staff and briefed them the R&D activities of Institute as well as Nutrihub. Students also visited Millet Primary and secondary processing units the activities were briefed by Dr. Ravi Kumar Vemula; PRO. Students were also given literature on Millets .

Inspection of Official Language Implementation at IIMR, Hyderabad by Deputy Director, Regional Implementation office, Bangalore
The Official Language Implementation activities at IIMR, Hyderabad were monitored by Shri KP Sharma, Deputy Director, Regional Implementation Office, Department of Offi‐cial Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on 17th September, 2019. He appreciated the work done at IIMR for Official Language Implementation & emphasized on original Hindi correspondence instead of covering letters. Dr. C V Rat‐navathi, I/C Director assured him to improve official Language Implementation at the Institute. Dr. Mahesh Kumar coordinated the inspection under the guidance of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi.
Guest Lectures delivered Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Senior Technical Officer (Official Language), IIMR delivered a guest lecture on “Prashasanik Shabdavali Aur Karyalayin Patrachar” during Hindi Workshop on 30th September, 2019 at Univer‐sity of Hyderabad, Hyderabad.
Meeting of the Official Language Implementation Committee The 50th meeting of Official Language Implementation Committee was conducted at the ICAR ‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research on 20th September, 2019 under the Chairmanship of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director. The other members including Dr. Jinu Jacob, OIC, Hindi Cell, Dr. Madhusudan, OIC, PME Cell; Dr. Venkatesh Bhat, OIC, Tech‐nical & Medial Cell and OIC, Computer & Website; Dr. Soogana, OIC, Library, Shri Charles Ekka, SAO; Shri A N Murthy, FAO and Member Secretary, Dr. Mahesh Kumar, STO (OL) participated in this meeting. The points raised by Shri KP Sharma, Deputy Director, Regional Implementation Office, Dept. of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs during the Inspection at IIMR, Hyderabad was discussed in the meeting.
Hindi Chetana Maas Celebration ICAR‐IIMR, Hyderabad celebrated Hindi Chetana Maas during 31st August – 30 September, 2019 at IIMR, Hyderabad. The programme was inaugu‐rated by Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR on 31st August, 2019 by lightning the lamp. Eleven compe‐titions‐Hindi Alphabets, Hindi Text Reading, Trans‐lation, Antyakshari, Hindi Writing, Hindi Dictation, Quiz etc. were organized during the Chetana
Maas. Scientists, Technical and Administrative per‐sonnel, research scholars and students of IIMR par‐ticipated in the above competitions with great enthu‐siasm. Dr. B Shyamprasad, Dr. PG padmaja, Dr. Aruna D Reddy, Dr. HS Talwar, Dr. VR Bhagwat, Dr. RR Chapke, Dr. Dr. Hariprasanna K,, Dr. Avinash Singode, Jinu Jacob, Dr. Sangappa, Dr. M Elangovan, Smt. Kanti Meena, Shri, B Satish, Smt. A Annapurna, Smt. D Revati, Shri
Sunil Kumar, Smt. Usha Satija, Dr. DM Bhadura, Dr. V Ravi Kumar, Shri Sanat Kumar, Shri Ramswaroop Meena, Shri HS Gawali & Dr. Mahesh Kumar were given their services as judges of the competitions. Besides, there was a signature campaign in Hindi during the month, in which all the officers and employ‐ees signed their official documents in Hindi.
