Handbooks for the Identifi-cation of British Insects se-ries. After that I secured a further assistantship study-ing the nymphal stages of psyllids and I was able to write-up that work for a Ph.D., with external super-vision provided by Dave Hollis at the NHM. There followed another year in Liverpool writing a second volume in the Royal Ento-mological Society’s Hand-book series to cover the im-mature stages of British psyllids.
The next two years were spent working for the Na-ture Conservancy Council as part of a small team compiling a register of sites of importance for the con-servation of insects. I was lucky enough to be posted to Edinburgh and given the responsibility of collating the register for Scotland. The contract was only for two years and at just the right time for me the Com-monwealth Institute of En-tomology (CIE) were re-cruiting staff for three new posts. None were in

How (Why) did you choose to be an ento-mologist?
My parents belonged to a local natural history socie-ty in Hertfordshire (to the north of London) and used to attend field meetings almost every weekend. The group produced a book on the fauna and flo-ra of a place called North-aw Great Wood and they took on the task of writing a chapter on the fungi. Coleoptera which was where my real passion still lay so I risked making an open appli-cation without specifying which post I was particularly interested in. That paid off and in 1982 I was recruited to be assistant Dipterist under Keith Harris. CIE was part of the Commonwealth Agricul-tural Bureaux (CAB) but the insect taxonomists were based in the NHM, and I soon start-ed to focus on Tephritidae as being amongst the most im-portant fly pests in the mem-ber countries.
What are you most proud of in your career and who inspired you?
It’s difficult to choose but I suppose really it was in find-ing ways to promote fruit fly taxonomy to various broader fields. When I started to study fruit flies I had expected to be working on tropical genera from the start. However, I needed training as a Dipterist first so compiled yet another volume in the British Hand-books series. Most European tephritids develop in the flow-er heads of Asteraceae, some of which are adventive weeds in North America, and I got involved in weed biocontrol projects. Taxonomic study cleared up a lot of confusion of host relationships and the potential list of control agents after revision was greater
than before. That was a quantifiable benefit of basic taxonomy that I returned to again and again when trying to “sell” taxonomy.
Part of my job was to pro-vide routine identifications of fruit flies and other Dip-tera to researchers in our Commonwealth member countries, and to help pro-vide training both at home and abroad. It was while helping to teach fruit fly identification in Malaysia with Dick Drew and Mar-lene Elson-Harris from Brisbane that we identified the need for a basic manual for the identification of the pest groups worldwide. The book Fruit Flies of Eco-nomic Significance was thus born over a beer by a swimming pool one even-ing in Kuala Lumpur! Mar-lene had been doing some fantastic work on the iden-tification of the larvae of fruit flies and it seemed natural to integrate that in-to the book, along with bio-nomic data gathered from the abstracting sources published by CAB. The book was published in 1992 and sold well enough to re-quire reprinting in 1994.
At about the same time the potential use of computers to assist the identification
process began to inter-est me and I started to develop identification software which I called CABIKEY. By that time CAB had become CAB International (CABI) and somewhat tongue in cheek I al-ways claimed that CABIKEY was an acro-nym for Computer Aided Biological Iden-tification Key!
Is there anything that you wanted to achieve/complete but you did not manage for any reasons?
It is unfortunate that in the 1997-9 period CABI found it neces-sary to pull the plug on most of their scien-tific services which re-sulted in staff losing jobs. The Windows version of CABIKEY had been used as the basis of CD-ROM pub-lications in 1997 and the time was right for handing the whole thing over to a profes-sional programmer to add a user friendly da-ta input system, so that the system could be marketed to other taxonomists. The rival LUCID system had

been given a professional front end and sells well but the CABIKEY con-cept inevitably fell by the wayside.
However, I was still able to put data into CABIKEY (under license from CABI) and that enabled me to secure short-term contracts to carry on de-veloping fruit fly identification aids as well as more general taxonomic research. Most of my subsequent work was carried out under the um-brella of the African Fruit Fly Initia-tive organized by ICIPE in Nairobi. Most of my funding came from the US, either as US-AID or USDA pro-jects organized by Bob Wharton at Texas A&M University and adminis-tered by the NHM. The most notable achievement was a monographic re-vision of the African species of Dacus.
Where do you and your family like to go on vacation?
The short answer to that is anywhere with rugged or mountainous scen-ery! Our son went to a College in Sheffield and then settled there. Sheffield is on the edge of the Peak District National Park and my wife and I soon fell in love with the area too. Early in 2014 we moved to the spa town of Buxton, which is sur-rounded by the Peak District and has been a resort since Roman times. For the first 15 months we did not travel anywhere and the everlasting vacation continues!
Where was your best foreign desti-nation, and where else would you like to go?
I’d hate to single out any one destination as I was privileged to travel to so many places! Before I joined CABI I’d already visited a few areas in the Neotropics and the Hawaiian Islands. With CABI I got to travel to several Asian countries and Aus-tralasia, and after CABI Kenya, South Afri-ca and to the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Reunion. For the combina-tion of biology and scenery the isolated is-lands of Reunion and the Hawaiian Is-lands were of particular interest. If it were possible to somehow skip the long journey I’d certainly visit those areas again but in practice I suspect the Scottish Highlands or perhaps the Alps will be the limit from now on!
Last words…
I’d like to mention the huge debt of grati-tude that I owe to the NHM who made all the former CABI entomologists Scientific Associates of their museum. They provid-ed us with a base from which to continue research provided we had the funds. We each faced the stark choice of trying to carry on in entomology or looking else-where and I actually got as far as being asked for interview by an IT company. Luckily funding for a project came through a few days later and with the sup-port of my wife Joy the decision was made to stick with my chosen profession! Those first projects were Dutch funded under the Fauna Malesiana umbrella and one was to produce a CABIKEY system for vector spe-cies of mosquitos. The African fruit fly projects I mentioned earlier soon fol-lowed.

community of tephriti-
dologists that our col-
league and friend, Dr.
Cheslavo Korytkowski, passed away on
May 12, 2015. Cheslavo was born in
Arequipa, Peru in 1941. He studied
Agronomy (1961-64) and a Master of
Science degree (1970-72) at the Agrar-
ian National University in Peru. Later,
in 1982, he was awarded a Doctor of
Science (Entomology) degree at the
University of San Marcos.
He was interested in both taxonomy
and pest management. His research
papers were on taxonomy of Diptera
(Lonchaieidae, Ulidiiadae, Richardi-
idae, Agromyzidae and Tephritidae),
and the biology, biological control
and pest management of fruit flies in
Central America.
He was well known for the many
training courses in fruit fly identifi-
cation that he organized and led.
He was a professor at the Entomolo-
gy Program of the University of Pan-
ama. He was always willing to col-
laborate and advise fruit fly pro-
grams.
In recent years, he was a close advi-
sor to the Ministry of Agricultural
Development (MIDA) in Panama,
and the Inter-regional Organization
on Plant and Animal Heath (OIRSA)
in Central America.
He will be remembered for his deep
knowledge, and his friendship.

The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a species-specific, non-polluting pest control method, and has been used ef-fectively in many area-wide fruit fly control programs. This technique has been used for the control of the Mexi-can fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens, in Mexico and Southern USA for more than 30 years. Mass-reared sterilized males are released into the field where they compete against wild males for matings with receptive wild females in order to transfer the sperm-carrying dominant lethal mutations for inducing sterility in wild females. Periodically, the fitness of mass-reared sterilized males to compete with wild males should be tested with respect to, for example, escaping predation, male competitiveness, survival under extreme weather conditions, and chemical cue composition during sex-ual activity. As an alternative method for mass-reared strain improvement, selection of best-performing males as parents for mass rearing has been proposed, by which selection for mating and sur-vival increased mating competitive-
ness. A number of studies have

nomic research is also important for further re-
search on ecology, population monitoring and de-
veloping market access strategies. The identifica-
tion of similar visually species of fruit flies is a diffi-
cult task for non-taxonomic scientists.
Acknowledging this importance, the Pakistan Mu-
seum of Natural History (PMNH) organized a 1-day
training workshop on “Taxonomy and Biology of
Fruit Flies” on 25th February, 2015. The Chairman
of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Prof. Dr.
Muhammad Ashraf, was the main guest of the
event. Sixteen participants belonging to the re-
search, extension, and plant protection wings of the
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sind provinces,
scientists of the National Agricultural Research
Council (NARC), the Federal Plant Protection De-
partment, CABI Biosciences and Ph.D. students of
different universities attended the training work-
shop. Dr. Khalid Mahmood, Curator, PMNH, gave a
presentation on identification, distribution and host
range of fruit fly species recorded from Pakistan.
Dr. Ihsan ul Haq, S.S.O., NARC, gave a presentation
on “Current approaches for management of fruit
flies”.
In their comments after the workshop, the partici-
pants highly appreciated the effort of PMNH for
holding this workshop. They also suggested con-
ducting this workshop on an annual basis, and that
it should be conducted over 2 to 3 days.
T here are nearly fifteen species
of fruit flies in Pakistan.
Three species, B. zonata, B. cucur-
bitae and B. dorsalis, are severe pests of all
commercially grown fruits and vegetables
such as guava, mango, orange, banana and
melon.
They attack the fruits at the ripening stage,
when the growers had already made all the
investments on crop production and are ready
to harvest the fruit.
The presence of pest fruit flies in Pakistan has
resulted in quarantine restrictions being im-
posed by importing countries. Some countries
like Iran, USA and Turkey have denied all ac-
cess to their markets for fruits produced in
Pakistan, while other countries (Australia,
Japan and EU) require that expensive disin-
festation treatments be carried out in Paki-
stan before shipment. Similarly, quarantine
regulations in Pakistan have to be imposed to
limit the spread of fruit flies to other areas,
and to save indigenous horticulture from ex-
otic species of fruit flies like Ceratitis capitata
and Bactrocera minax, etc..
Correctly identifying these pests is the fore-
most step for formulating effective and envi-
ronmentally safe pest management tools and
realistic quarantine decision-making. Taxo-

Dr. Kémo BADJI has recently been nominated as Head of the surveillance component of the Fruit Fly Control Project in West Africa. ----
Dr. Kémo BADJI is a research entomologist
at the Plant Protection Directorate (DPV) of
the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Equipment of the Republic of Sénégal, in
Dakar. He is recognized for his research in
the areas of quantitative ecology, biological
control, mass rearing, and IPM of fruit flies
with over 10 co-authored scientific articles.
Dr. Badji completed his B.Sc. in plant pro-
tection in 2005 at the Agro-Hydro-Metéo
Center’s Major Training Program in Niamey, Niger, and his MSc. in Agriculture and plant protection (major Ento-
mopathology) at the University of Thiès (UT), Senegal. Dr. Badji was co-supervised by researchers at both UT and the
Department of Entomology of Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg VA, USA. He then
attended the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, Mali
in collaboration with Virginia Tech where he completed his Ph.D. in 2014 in quanti-
tative ecology and applied biology and has since continued in this stream. .
Dr. Badji worked as a Research Assistant from 1996 to 2005 at the Rearing Re-
search Unit in DPV, where base funding increased from $150,000 to $400,000
through a series of fruit fly suppression trials funded by USAID and DANIDA. He
has been called upon frequently for advice by the Plant Health Inspection and Quar-
antine Service, National Agricultural Extension and USAID funded NGOS. Dr.
Badji’s research collaborations extend over 15 years with organisations including
the Office of International Research and Development,Virginia Tech, USDA/ARS
Daniel K. Inouye US Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center, Hilo HI, DMU-
University of Aarhus, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Foreign Ag-
ricultural Service of the US Embassy in Dakar, Senegal.
Dr. Badji has presented over 50 scientific papers and participated in workshops worldwide. Dr. Badji was awarded over
$100,000 from the Senegal Government to supplement DPV with funds for fruit fly suppression programs. From 2006
to 2014, he coordinated multiple successful fruit fly national projects in Senegal. In October 2014, he was selected as a
fruit fly population surveillance expert in the ECOWAS Community Fruit Fly Suppression and Control project. In 2015,
he moved to Bamako for the new responsibilities. Dr. Badji’s new role with respect to the ECOWAS’s 16 countries is to
organize a national and regional monitoring system for fruit fly populations, monitor fruit fly impact on fruits, especially
mango, monitor ongoing control measures efficacy and provide information and alerts to consumers and growers on
emerging pests of mango in West Africa.

Dr. Chandra Shekhar Prabhakar
Bihar Agricultural University Sabour—Bhagalpur, Bihar, India
Dr. Prabhakar recently joined the Department of Entomology, Bihar
Agricultural University as Assistant Professor-cum-Junior Scientist.
His Masters and Doctoral research studies were on fruit fly-bacteria
symbiosis, and fruit fly biodiversity on the Indian
subcontinent, conducted at CSK Himachal Pradesh
Agricultural University, Palampur, Himachal Pra-
desh, India. Before joining his present position, he
worked as a post-doctoral researcher on different as-
pects of fruit fly ecology and management and on
other insect pests in different national and internation-
al laboratories, viz. the Indian Council Agricultural
Research Complex for Eastern Region, Research
Centre, Jharkhand, India; the International Crops Re-
search Institute for Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT),
Patancheru, India; and the Nuclear Agriculture and
Biotechnology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research
Centre, Trombay, India. He is also a recipient of
prestigious Dr KS Krishnan Research Fellowship
awarded by the President of India on recommendation
of the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences
(BRNS), DAE, Govt of India, to work on peaceful
uses of radiation technology in insect pest manage-
ment.
His research interests include
fruit fly systematics, manage-
ment and quarantine, insect-
bacterial symbiosis, phylogeog-
raphy, plant protection in a
changing climate scenario, use
of radiation in insect pest man-
agement, incompatible insect
technique (IIT), and area-wide

In March this year, Mohammad Shadmany joined Charles Sturt University (CSU)
as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr Olivia Reynolds (NSW Department of Primary
Industries) and Prof Geoff Gurr (CSU). Originally heralding from Iran, Mohammad completed
his Masters in Entomology at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) where he focused on insecticide

The information has been de-
rived from more than 20 years
research and extension experi-
ence with commercial vegetable
crops by staff of Entomology,
Plant Pathology and Horticul-
ture, within the Plant Industries
Group, Northern Territory De-
partment of Primary Industry
