The community was further
honoured by the presentation of a
portrait by the artist, Shelly Adler.
This multi-dimensional painting is
featured on the cover of Douglas
Copeland’s biography of Marshall
McLuhan.
This visit was followed by a
lecture by Robert Logan, a profes-
sor at St. Michael’s College, UofT. Professor Logan shared some
academic and personal stories
about his interactions with
Marshall McLuhan.
To further build relationships with
the McLuhan legacy, students in
the Advanced Placement English
program were able to visit the
campus of St. Michael's College
and see where Marshall McLuhan
crafted many of his famous works
and developed many of his prolific
ideas. They also participated in an
interactive tour of the Kelly
Library’s Archives, which house a
unique collection of artifacts
related to his life
Students and teachers are commit-
ted to maintaining these important
connections with St. Michael’s
College, his academic colleagues,
and with the McLuhan family.
On March 25th, the school
was filled with excitement for
the anticipated visit by
Michael McLuhan, Marshall
McLuhan’s son. Mr. McLuhan
came to share personal
stories and never-before-seen
photographs of his famous
father taken in 1966 by
master photographer Henri Dauman for Life Magazine.
This visit was directly linked
to the anniversary of
McLuhan’s conversion to
Roman Catholicism.
McLuhan’s reflections were
humorous and inspirational.
The visit provided students
with an opportunity to
appreciate the person
behind the school’s name
sake.
A McLuhan Reunion
Poetry in Voice—A McLuhan Winner
During the Express Yourself
Festival, thirty students partici-
pated in a nation-wide poetry
contest. With natural ability and
passion for the spoken word,
Tiffany Toussaint, a grade 9
student, was chosen by a panel
of McLuhan teachers to repre-
sent the school for her recita-
tion of three poems: War (Lee
Maracle); Epitaph (Katherine
Philips), and, Fire and Ice (Robert
Frost). Her recitations were
filmed and were among the 585
recitation videos submitted to “Poetry in Voice” national judg-
es. Her recitations were among
the top 39 videos selected for
appropriateness of dramatiza-
tion and evidence of under-
standing. Tiffany was rewarded
on May 9 with an all-expenses-
paid trip to Vancouver where
she competed in the national
finals for a chance to win the
$5,000.00 grand prize. Tiffany
was one of eighteen finalists in
the English-speaking category.
She was a crowd favourite, and
she made it to the top six in the
final round. Tiffany’s success led to an invitation to recite the
poem, War, at this year’s
Luminato Festival where, once
again, her energy and passion
wowed the crowd.

On April 29th, students presented
the experimental findings of their
four month experiment to two
panels of judges at the regional
competition of the Sanofi-
BioGENEius Challenge (SBCC).
This is Canada's only national
biotechnology competition with
mentors from Canada's top univer-
sities and research institutes.
Working closely with their mentor
Dr. Bharati Bapat and two Ph.D
students from the Lunenfeld-
Tenenbaum Research institute at
Mount Sinai, these students con-
ducted university-level research in
the area of colon cancer. They
determined that a specific strain of
probiotic bacteria inhibited a patho-
genic bacterial strain implicated in
the initiation of colon carcinomas.

SHSM—New Beginnings
Warm Soles people served at Covenant
House. Why socks? These
basic necessities are one of
the most requested items
at shelters and are one of
the least available.
4,217 pairs of new
socks were collected. The
Peer Ministry Team, led by Chaplain Linda Izzo, is
proud of the success of
this charitable event.
Special thanks to
McGregor, Gertex and
Norelda sock companies
for their donations.
In the Lenten Season, we
turned our focus, once
again, to reaching out to
those in need. This year
our charitable Lenten
campaign was entitled
“Warm Soles” and
supported Covenant
House which serves run-
away and homeless youth, aged 16 to 24. The
campaign was officially
launched at the Ash
Wednesday Masses on
March 5th and ran for the
forty days of Lent. Day 1,
Period 4 classes, collected
new socks for the young

OTHER
ACHIEVEMENTS
Grade 10 Applied
students attempted to join
the Guinness Book of
World Records by partic-
ipating in the world’s larg-
est science experiment.
Sabrina Rocha and Samuel
Simon placed third in the
Toronto Science Fair with
their project on the
effects of Vitamin C.
Grade 11 AP students
wrote the University of
Waterloo’s Avogadra
Chemistry exam.
Grade 12 U students
wrote the University of
Waterloo’s Sir Isaac
Newton Physics exam.
This was a year of new
beginnings for our Specialist
High Skills Major (SHSM)
Programs. In our ICT
(Information/
Communication and
Technology) Sector,
students participated in a
Venegeo workshop on
software design. They also
engaged in a discussion on
intellectual property in pho-
tography. Other learning
experiences included visits
to the Design Exchange,
Skills Canada and the
Magazine Expo. Finally, two
students will receive the
“Red Seal” for success for all
their work in this program.
In the Social Justice (Non
-Profit) SHSM, over 40
students participated in
workshops at the Friends of
Simon Wiesenthal Center,
the Mary Ward Centre and
George Brown College
covering topics from Manage-
ment and Leadership training
to Intolerant Attitudes in
Canada and Heroism to Equity
and Inclusion and “The Right
of Girls and Women Around
the World”. Students in both
programs learned CPR and
First Aid and explored what
life is like in the margins for
many people in Toronto. The
students were enriched by
these experiences as they
prepare for University,
College and the workforce.
Finally, we are excited to
announce that we will have a
new Sports SHSM begin-
ning this September. All
grade 11 and 12 students are
able to apply to any of these
SHSM programs in
September 2014. We look
forward to many more
students graduating with the
Red Seal certifications in
these areas.

This year marked the start of a
new chapter in Marshall
McLuhan’s Music Program. Our
music students were involved
in over twenty events and
performances for the
2013/2014 academic year. They
successfully rose to meet the
challenges of a busy schedule
and continuously demonstrated
how their commitment was key
in their success. These oppor-
tunities provided them with
first-hand experience with
hearing and seeing professional
musicians perform on a regular
basis. Our bands also had the
opportunity to perform at
numerous events. Our perfor-
mance schedule included the
OBA MusicFest where our
Concert Band won a Silver
Award and earned an invitation
to compete at the National
MusicFest Canada.
Mr. Garofalo would like to
thank all the students who
worked so diligently over the
past year. A special thanks goes
out to the students of the
Marshall McLuhan Concert
Band, the Marshall McLuhan
Junior Concert Band and the
Marshall McLuhan Jazz Band.
Their commitment and efforts
to build a stronger band
program and community are an
example for us all. Their musi-
cality, efforts, and dedication
are greatly appreciated!
On April 30th, 49 senior stu-
dents traveled to New York
City for six days. Students
experienced an exciting mix of
sightseeing, art, and entertain-
ment in one of America’s most
vibrant cities. Some of the sites
included the 9/11 Memorial,
Central Park, Times Square,
Rockefeller Centre, 5th Avenue, and a boat ride to the Statue of
Liberty! Students visited a wide
range of museums and galleries
and explored contemporary art
This year marked the 10th
anniversary of the school’s
participation in the “iChoose
Program”. As part of this
social justice program, students
travelled to Washington to
the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum where they listened to
survivor, Louise Lawrence
Israels. This experience motivated the students to run
an on-line petition campaign for
the release of the 234 girls
captured in Nigeria.
and natural history. Evenings
were filled with entertainment,
with entries to the Apollo
Theatre, Broadway shows, and
a surprising ticket to the
Toronto Raptors Game #6
against the Brooklyn Nets!
The trips were very successful and all students returned
extremely happy, given that
they had unforgettable
experiences.

Athletics—Track & Hockey Take Centre Stage
The McLuhan athletic year ended on a high note when Eric Ferreira and Dylan Ritter won OFSAA gold. Eric
sealed the deal on an undefeated grade 10 year by placing first in the JR Boys Shot Putt. He had an impressive throw of 17.08m. Dylan Ritter was the 200m WC Champion.
In total, twenty McLuhan athletes qualified to compete at the OFSAA Track & Field Championships. We came
home with four provincial medals. Ezana Wossen was the JR Boys 400m silver medalist and the JR Boys 800m
bronze medalist. The JR Boys team finished an impressive 4th place, missing bronze by only 6 points. Overall,
the Marshall McLuhan Boys team finished 6th place in the province.
The Rebels Hockey team headed into the playoffs in the number two seed. They advanced all the way to
the finals, which took place at the MasterCard Memorial Arena. Facing the mighty Michael Power, the Rebels
lost a close game by 4-3. The Rebels were granted with finalist medals, which they nobly wore. Jeremy Rizzet-
to’s example, both on and off the ice, earned him the MVP Award. Brandon Power was a co-recipient of this
award. The whole school is very proud of their accomplishment and excited about the rebirth of hockey at
McLuhan. A huge thanks goes to Mr. D. Brohman and Mr. Del Deegan for dedicating their time to the team.
