Honesty Comes from the Heart
It was the day the XII results had been published. The list of rank holders and their photographs took up almost the entire front page An Industrialist had a great fascination for rank holders. Of all the photographs, one boy’s snapshot caught his attention. He wanted to know more about him. He is Hanumanthappa and he had secured 8th rank. Next day, his photograph was published again, with an interview. He said that he was a collie’s
son the oldest of five children, belong to a tribal group. He expressed with tears that he was not able to study further, because, he needs to earn to protect his family. While reading the interview, the Industrialist communicated that he would like to sponsor him. It means he will pay his fees any course of study he wishes to take up wherever it may be. Hanumanthappa replied in a low and steady tone that he wants to pursue his studies at the Teachers’ Training College. Industrialist agreed instantly but spoke to him a little more to find out whether there was any other course he preferred, trying to make it clear to him that he would pay the fees for any course he might choose. Hanumanthappa, however, seemed to know exactly what he wanted. Industrialist asked, “How much money should I send you every month? Does the college have a hostel facility? Hanumanthappa replied that he would require approximately Rs.300/- p.m. Immediately, Industrialist gave Rs.1800/- for six months Time passed, Industrialist had sent another draft for `1800/- for next 6 months. But, couple of days later, Hanumanthappa has sent a letter and some currency notes. The covering letter says “Sir, It is kind of you to have sent me money for the next six months. But, I was not in the hostel for the last two months. One month our college was closed for holidays and during the next month, there was a strike. So I stayed home for those two months. My expenditure during these two months was less than Rs.300/- per month Therefore, I am sending you the Rs.300/- that I have not used for the last two months. Kindly accept this amount Hanumanthappa knew industrialist no account of the money sent to him. Yet he had made it a point to return the balance money. Unbelievable but true! Experience has taught that honesty is not the mark of any particular class nor is it related to education or wealth. It cannot be taught at any university. In most people, it springs naturally from the heart. Industrialist did not know how to react instantly. But, two years later, he had sent his HR team to his college for campus interview and made them to select Hanumanthappa without any interview. Now, Hanmanthappa is the Vice President of one among Top 3 companies and he sponsors every year to so many Hanumanthappas……………..

" Owning Responsibility" and "Accepting failures" - a rare gesture from persons.
Here is a person who "owns" and "accepts". He is none other than Dr. APJ Kalam.
An abstract from WINGS OF FIRE Abridged version – An autobiography by APJAK with Arun Tiwari , Page No 68 .... During the meeting with Prof Dhawan when the report on the findings of the failure of the Launch of SLV-3 were presented . On the spur of the moment, “I stood up and said, as the mission director, I should have put the launch on hold and saved the flight if possible. In a similar situation abroad, the mission director would have lost his job .I therefore take responsibility for SLV-3’S FAILURE,” I announced. For some time there was total silence in the hall. Then Prof Dhawan got up and said, "I am going to put Kalam in the orbit.” He left the place signal-ling that the meeting was over.
Let us all try to emulate the "ideals" and "ideas" of Dr. APJ Kalam.
