Greetings fellow PCA/GEM members,
This has been such a fun year so far and we still have plenty more fun events to participate
in! About the time summer starts cooling down, our club events start heating up. I invite all of you to become
more involved in our awesome club. One of the ways to become more involved is to attend our board meetings. In
those meetings, you can have direct input as to the kinds of things you and your family would like to see our club
do. Most of the events you have seen our club do this year are a result of someone bring up an idea and the board
following through and getting it to happen. Sometimes as easy as asking Tammy Harris to put it on the calendar and
participating in the event. Our board meetings are sometimes held in a restaurant setting, but most are held at one
of the board members’ homes. Here is a synopsis of what happens at our board meetings:
At each board meeting, we review the current membership and financials. Each board member then reports on
their status, i.e. President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer. Activity chairs are also part of the board such as
Membership, Concours, Autocross, Safety, Social, Newsletter and Web Site. We then review old news and bring up
any new news. We also talk about how to continue to grow our club and become more involved in the community.
Our last couple of board meetings have really focused on our upcoming Concours and Autocross the first weekend of October. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Betsy Wadman (wadman@sbcglobal.net) for Concours; Charles Rooks (flyinglow22@yahoo.com) or Greg Fullmer (gregfullmer@greenporsche.com) for Autocross. Be sure to read the article on Concours events by Betsy found elsewhere in this newsletter.
On a personal note, I would like to share how becoming involved with the board has really made the club even more
fun for me. I first became a PCA member when I lived in the Bay Area as a member of PCA’s Diablo Region. My
reasons for becoming a member were around getting the Panorama and discounted entry to Golden Gate Region’s
autocrosses held in Alameda. I was not all that involved in the other club events other than the occasional drive and
Saturday breakfast. When I moved to Bakersfield, I was at first surprised to find that there was a local PCA
region. The first meeting I attended was a board meeting and it was there that changed what my idea of what being
a club member really meant. I found a group of enthusiasts, not just interested in the cars, but interested in having
fun, gaining new friends and connections and helping the community. That first day, I asked a lot of questions,
brought up some ideas. The amazing thing was that some of those ideas actually happened! From that moment on,
I knew I had found something special, I knew that I had found an extended family. I share this with you that you may
also find something special in what our club is and does.
Getting involved in something with folks who share the same passion and also have fun doing it is really a special
experience. Ask any board member, ask any member that volunteers and participates in our events.
Remember, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

1995 Porsche Carrera 911 Coupe, 993 generation, Guards Red/ Tan upholstery, Manual 6 speed transmission, 67K miles. I am the 3rd own-
er and the cars two previous owners are also from Bakersfield. Surprisingly, this car has spent its entire life in Bakersfield yet nobody from
the Porsche community has ever seen it. The guy I bought it from has owned the car for the past 13 years but rarely drove it. It is in out-
standing condition and ready to represent GEM at upcoming events!
The car was not for sale when I was introduced to the owner by a mutual friend who knew he had a 993 and that I was looking for one. After
lengthy negotiations we came to terms for the sale.

Red is the Colour, and the Colour Shall be Red To Quasi Quote Monte Python’s Holy Grail
I’ve heard things happen in groups of threes. And that’s certainly the case of Porsche colors
with Mr. Chow. Rene and his wife Maggie purchased there first Porsche around 2010. A Guards Red Boxster.
Rene then got the bug for something different. He found a gorgeous ‘89 911 Carrera in San Luis Obispo and purchased it. The color?
Guards Red.
Rene, who has become a ‘big fan’ of air cooled Porsches, decided that the right Porsche 993 would offer the best of both the older air
cooled excitement along with comforts of a more modern Porsche. But what would be the color of this next car? How about Guards Red !
Now Mr. Chow has testified that all the Guards Red Porsches in his life were purely coincidental. He would find a Porsche that he liked and
the car’s color was truly quite secondary in the selection of the car.
Well, what ever the color, Rene certainly knows how to choose beautiful Porsches. His latest pictured here above is a 1995 Porsche Carrera
911 Coupe, of the 993 generation. This was a very early production year of the last group of the air cooled 911s. And when the Porsche 993
was discontinued, so was the era of the Porsche air cooled 911s.
The Tan interior provides a beautiful contrast to the bright Guards Red exterior. And as always, Rene demanded it too had to a manual
gearbox. In this case a 6 speed transmission. The 993 was the first generation of 911s to provide a 6 speed gearbox, with the exception of
the Porsche 959. And as with every Porsche Rene has owned, the 3.6 M64 engine is a thing of beauty and absolutely spotless.
The car was not for sale when he was introduced to the owner though a mutual friend. The mutual friend knew the previous owner had a
993 and that Rene was looking for one. After lengthy negotiations we came to terms for the sale. Rene is the 3rd owner of this 993. The
cars two previous owners are also from Bakersfield. Surprisingly though, this car has spent its entire life in Bakersfield yet nobody from the
Porsche community has ever seen it. The person he bought it from has owned the car for the past 13 years but rarely drove it. This Porsche
911 is in outstanding condition and ready to represent the Golden Empire Region of the PCA at upcoming events!
Well done Mr. Chow !

A Few Things in the Werks for the Golden Empire Region
A couple of new Driving/Social Events are currently being organized. The first one is an idea that developed back
in December. It will be a multi-day drive throughout Central California. In the spirit of the Italian Mille Miglia and
California Mille, a Golden Empire Region Meta Mille Miglia is being formed. The dates are Friday Oct 31 through
Sunday Nov 2.
It’s a 500 mile tour that will take place over a three day period. From Friday
though Sunday attendees will drive from Bakersfield, through the curves of
Hwy 33 to Ojai. Up the lower Central Coast through the Santa Barbara wine
vineyards of Los Olivos. The sleepy community of Los Olivos is a good place
for dinner and some great wine sampling. And then enjoy a relaxing over-
night stay in Solvang.
Saturday mourning will bring a drive up Central Coast through
Morro Bay to Cambria. Shopping and eating will take place in Cambria that afternoon.
Then on up to Ragged Point Inn on Hwy 1 for dinner and lodging at 600 feet above the rug-
ged coastline of the Pacific Ocean. But we are not done with Saturday yet. An evening tour
through Hearst Castle is being organized for that night.
Sunday morning takes use up the majestic coast of beautiful Hwy 1 into Carmel for
lunch. Then off to Hollister to stage a spirited fun run down through Hwy 25 and back
home.
This is only a broad overview and some of information listed here maybe slightly inaccurate.
We would be interested in suggestions anyone may have to help fine tune our Meta Mille.
This will be a pay-as-you-go tour. So members will be required to make their own lodging
plans. This will allow for varying pricing options for lodging.
The other Driving Tour we are working to organize is a wine tasting trip to Paso Robles. Sandy Anderson did
a great job getting the ball rolling on this. However, things failed to come together for this one. We are in
contact with a follow PCA member who now lives in Paso Robles that specializes in organizing wine tours. He
states he can put a Paso Roble wine tour together that produces maximum enjoyment at a modest cost. He
indicated that there are some very nice hotels at some reasonable prices during a weekday, in the month of
November.
He has stated that if we are flexible enough to plan a trip that includes a Thursday night only stay
that will help to keep the cost down and avoid the large weekend crowds. He also stated that he can
arrange the a scenic drive before the trip, wine tasting at as many as ten vineyards. He will also plan
two lunches and one dinner all at different wineries. He even stated something about an olive or
olive tasting tour.
What he needs to help us crate this tour is a date and a num-
ber of participants. He stated that he can produce a very
nice two day trip in the range of $400 per couple, including food at wineries and nice comfortable lodging
if done during time period stated above. He stated that the La Quinta Inn in Paso Robles offers very nice
rooms and a reasonable price.
I think that his cost are reasonable and his knowledge of the Paso Robles are vineyards will produce an
excellent trip with minimum planning and organizing on the clubs parts. Perhaps once we do a trip through him it will much easier for our GEM
group to organize a well planned trip ourselves. So be prepared to discuss these issues in the near future.

2014 Timeline
at Lake Arrowhead

Monterey never fails to amaze. From the race track to the parking lot, there were more jaw-dropping cars than we could possibly count this
year. The featured marque of most the more prominent Car Week events was Maserati, celebrating it’s one hundred year anniversary. How-
ever, overall it was a week with Ferrari written all over it. Nine of the top ten auction sales were filled by the Prancing Horse, a 375 MM
Scaglietti Coupe surprised many with a Best of Show win at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and I won’t soon forget the sight of twenty
Testa Rossas cascading around the 17th and 18th holes of the Pebble Beach Golf course among 200 other automotive treasures.
From the flurry of auctions on the peninsula, the results are in from RM, Gooding and Bonhams. The Ferrari 250 GTO consigned by Bonhams, a
car that was never far from anyone’s mind all week, rather unsurprisingly broke the all-time auction record when it took $38,115,000.
However, Many were surprised that this little GTO didn't bring more money. Considered by many as the Holy Grail of cars, only 39 of these
beautifully designed, factory track cars were ever produced. They dominated the world race tracks in the early ‘60s. And are now the center
stone of many billionaire car collectors. The GTO joined nine other Ferraris from the Maranello Rosso Collection to bring a total of $65,945,000
among the these three big auction housed.
The magic once of the paddock at the MotorSport Reunion illuminated once again the world renown racing track of Laguna Seca. It is a won-
derful display of the most significant racing cars ever built. A seemingly random cross-section of history, all scattered and nestled with each
other in the paddock. Walk down an alley and see the actual pre-1920 vintage racers, authentic Indy racers from the 1930s, all sitting next the
rows of 1930s Bugatti Type 35 racers that dominated the great race tracks of Europe in their day. Two or three row over stroll past the Mase-
rati Tipo 54 450S and the Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage racers from late 50s and early 60s. Which are usually parked next to rows of Ferarri 250
Tessa Rossas and 250 SWBs. All have been invited to show and race this particular weekend each year. And demonstrate what made each

The big event for all of us Porschephiles this year was the inaugural Porsche Werks
Reunion. And from what I saw it did not fail to please. The Porsche Club of America
hosted this new event. Over 500 Porsches were on display throughout this grounds of the Rancho Cañada Golf Club in Carmel Valley. I over-
head that an additional 200 Porsches were denied access to the car corral because of concerns as to how well the larger number of vehicles
could be managed. Most Porsche owner’s who didn't participate in having their cars judged also parked on the lawn as well in the Porsche only
Corral. As far as the eye could see, nothing but Porsche. From vintage to modern, from street to track cars, it was an awesome display of
Stuttgart's finest engineering . I’m sure next year the event will plan on hosting a much larger crowd of attendees and Porsches.
Cars from such collectors as Jerry Seinfeld, Magnus Walker, Bruce Canepa, and the Ingram family displayed some of less typical Porsches. This is
the same venue that hosted the Legends of the Autobahn last year. But the energy and excited of this Porsche exclusive event dwarfed what I
experienced at the previous year’s event when Porsche was only one of four German marques represented there.
Our Golden Empire Region was well represented at this years Werks. Ken Keenan entered his gorgeous Guards Red 944 Cabriolet for judging.
And refused the judges request to raise the top for showing. He stated “NO, This is how I drive it and this is how I want it judged.”
Way to go Ken ! That’s the ole GEM spirit ! And Magnus Walker didn't seem to mind at all that the 944’s top was down either.
Charee requested that I not take a picture with her “Blue Shoe”
showing. So please, no one look :)
Ken’s new Porsche Pal, Magnus ! Hey what’s that top doing down on that
car mister ? It really does look good down
Pat and Betsy was also hard at work with Q-Tips in hand as they Clean, Polished, and Prepped their stunning
19731/2 911 T Targa for the judges that Friday. Late in the production run of 1973, Porsche installed the more
advanced Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) fuel injection system into the 911 models. Often referred to as 19731/2 , these
T models are actually the strongest T models ever built. These cars have become quite collectable with their
bulletproof fuel system.
Judgment day comes hard and swift for the Wadmans, but the they prevail with a First Place Win!
Participants will spend hours on last-minute touch ups, cleaning paint, and polishing chrome.
Pat and Betsy Wadman take the
Stuttgart Award in their class.
First Place Trophy !
16
And a big Shout-Out has to go out to the Porsche Club of America who did an amazing job of hosting not one, but two large Porsche corral and
hospitality centers this year. One at the Werks Reunion, and the other at the MotorSport Reunion at Laguna Seca.
These parking corrals and hospitality tents truly adds a feeling of participation when attending these events even as a spectator. Even though
participating in a Porsche Corral come at an additional cost they offer some terrific benefits. For one day a corral attendees can feel a little
special as they are redirected from the general parking lanes of traffic that is usually stop and go , to their own special lane that takes them off to
an exclusive trackside parking area. I would estimate we parked among several hundred other Porsches on Saturday when we attended the
MotorSports Reunion. The parking
lots within the corral area are gen-
erally much less dirty and dusty
than the hillside general parking
area at Laguna Seca.
Corral parking also offers access to the PCA hospitality tents. This year these were located trackside at Turn 5. Literally an unblocked trackside
view of everything passing by that area of the track. It can get a little loud being that close to the track but sound is part of the excitement.
As well as providing a trackside view of the racing, the hospitality tent offers a clean shaded place to relax. Occasionally representatives from
well known companies such as Michelin and Continental tires, or Mobil One oil will be on hand to speak on the designs of their products and
values of using them. And the PCA goodie venders are always offering a fine selection of clothing, grill badges, and other related items for sell.
It has become obvious to me that the only other thing PCA members love as much as their Porsches is FOOD ! And this year the PCA hospitality
tent at MotorSport Reunion offered as excellent BBQ tri-tip and chicken lunch with all the fixins’. This too comes at an additional price but its so
nice to be able to sit down in your little part of the world and enjoy good food, among good people, at a great event, trackside.
And last , but certainly not least in the hospitality experience is they have their own clean bathroom faculties. They are upgraded portables that
are trailer mounted. And the lines to these consist of maybe one or people in front of you. Complete with their own indoor sink, soap, and tow-
els. For me, this is a biggie ! I’ll be honest, by the end of the day they begin to look less fresh, but still a welcome item to have included by PCA.
Trackside at Turn 5, Laguna Seca
PCA Hospitality Tents at the 2014 Werks Reunion and the MotorSport Reunion Laguna Seca Raceway
Registering for these Porsche Corrals can be a little tricky. Registration is provided through the MotorSportsReg.com online site. Not at the
Laguna Seca online site where the tickets must be purchased separately for the MotorSport Reunion track event. You will need to purchase tick-
ets for BOTH of these venues if you wish to participate in the PCA hospitality tent, trackside at the MotorSport Reunion. I just want to be clear
that tickets to the PCA Corral will not allow you into the Laguna Seca track event. You will need to purchase both track and PCA tickets. But you
will then have the freedom to hang out in the tent at Turn 5 and watch the racing in comfort or cruise through any part of the MotorSport
Reunion event you choose too. By the way, these are operated via PCA members volunteering there time and effort. If anyone would like to
assist in the volunteer efforts I’m your assistance will be greatly appreciated. These member volunteers do an amazing job, Thanks Guys !
It cost a little more, but if you want to feel like king for a day at the track, it’s the next best thing to driving the track.
Corral Parking and Hospitality Tents at the PCA events can add a lot of Enjoyment !

Jerry Seinfeld, is known in automotive circles as a consummate car collector, especially for classic Porsches. Which is
all great, right? Until someone uses your rare vintage Porsche 911 as a slow-motion crash tester.
As Seinfeld detailed to Page Six, he and a friend were sitting on a bench as they watched another driver attempt to
parallel-park her BMW in front of the comedian's 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. A former Brumos Porsche racing
team car. Brumos racing was established in 1971 by the Brumos Porsche dealership in Jackson, Florida.
“ She backed right into me” explained Jerry.
In classic Seinfeld show dialog Jerry stated, “We could hear the sound of metal crunching — rare, classic,
expensive, vintage metal, by the way — from across the street. A sickening sound to a car person.”
“And even though I’m sure I deserved this, because of who I am and that I have this amazing car, I was
furious I ran across the street, out of my mind and yelled at her, You just crashed into my car.”
Seinfeld evidently freaked out and a curbside confrontation ensued, during which the woman reportedly showed no
remorse whatsoever, saying only, "I didn't see it." According to Seinfeld, she couldn't understand why he was upset.
He sent her off without taking her information (which she did offer) because,
"the idea of having her in my life for one more second was intolerable."
Serenity Now Jerry, Serenity now !!

Porsche Prices Realized at the Monterey Week Auto Auctions
Here are some of the Porsche sales at the Monterey Auctions
last month. Porsche is gaining favor among collectors as indi-
cated here by the selection of Porsches listed this year and
price they are commanding at auction. I have read that a number of buyers during this week are shipping the cars
back to Europe. Interesting how these numbers are considered to be values by our neighbors across the pond.

"The market is out of control," says Winston Goodfellow, a collectible car expert and author of The Goodfellow Perspective blog. "Things are
going up 50 percent in six months. That's not normal market behavior."
"The dashboard warning lights are flashing and no one is paying attention," he said. "I think we'll have a correction, maybe not a crash. For me
a correction is healthy."
The collector car market CRATERED in 1989-90.
What were the significant events that preceded the collapse?
1. Auction companies popped up everywhere trying to get a piece of a rapidly growing number of transactions, increasing prices and resulting
commissions;
2. Cars sold to speculators, not collectors;
3. Individuals like Hans Thulin took on huge bets on the collector car market’s continued rise; Thulin eventually failed to consummate his
purchase of GTO 3607 at Monaco in 1990 for $10.7 million and a year later it was sold for a reported $6.9 million to cover the gap;
4. Prices inflated by significant percentages in periods measured in weeks, not years;
5. The same, identical, cars turned over again and again, sometimes in months;
6. Promoters (auction companies, dealers, brokers, speculators, ‘investors’) argued, “Buy now, it will cost more next month”;
7. Cars crawled out of the woodwork and were sold quickly, with little serious research, to new money buyers who relied upon superficial
descriptions and prior transactions to support their valuations;
8. New money was everywhere;
9. The popular press touted “investment values”;
10. High end Italian cars were taking off in price, leaving pre-war Classics in their dust.
Is the Collector Car Market a Raging Bull, or a Bubble about to Burst ?

“The GEM Lunch Counter discussions” is a new innovative way to get information out to all the
membership. This segment of the Grapevine will be used as a means for members to provide
information to the club just as you might while sitting together having a lunch counter conversation.
This would be a place to give automotive info, ideas for future events and or drives, health/fitness,
family secret food recipes, new car purchases or anything that might benefit the membership. Keep it
simple and fun.
We would like to encourage all members to consider picking a topic and writing something that you
believe the membership would want to hear about. Once you have done that submit it to the Grapevine
Editor Mike Thomas for review. The Lunch Counter discussions will only appear in the monthly news-
letter when a member has a submission. We hope all of you enjoy the first issue of the GEM Lunch
Counter conversations.
Rene R. Chow, GEM member
As editor of the Grapevine Newsletter I
would like to thank Mr. Chow for this
innovative concept of the GEM Lunch
Counter Conversations.
I have been attempting to get more GEM
members directly involved with the
Newsletter. And I believe that Rene has
stumbled upon an excellent avenue for
members who may feel that they would
enjoy bring attention to one of their
other passions outside of Porsches.
I encourage everyone to participate.
Remember, the PCA is not just the cars,
It’s about the People
