SensoryIntegrationDisorder(SID)isacomplexneurologicaldisorderthatleadstodifficultywithprocessinginformationgatheredbythesenses,organizingthatinformation,andusingthatinformationeffectively.Forindividualswiththisdisorder,sensoryinformationisprocessedbythebraininanunusualmannerthatresultsindistress,confussion,orinappropriatebehavior.SensoryIntegrationDisordermayimpactyourchild'sacademics,behavior,and/orsocialinteractionsduetoproblemswithfocusing,attending,acceptingchanges,anddelayedorimpairedmotor‐skilldevelopment.TherearethreedifferentsubtypesofSensoryIntegrationDisorders:SensoryModulationDisorder,SensoryDiscriminationDisorder,andSensory‐BasedMotorDisorder.SensoryModulationDisorderisanoversensitivityorundersensitivitytostimuli.Childrenwhoareoversensitivemaybeeasilyupsetanddistressedbyloudsounds,brightcolors,odors,andcertainfabrics.Thesechildrenmaybepickyeaters,becomeupsetduringdailygroomingroutines,ordislikegettingtheirhandsdirty.Childrenwhoareundersensitivemaybethrill‐seekers,seeksensorystimulationthroughhighlyphysicalactivities,fallfrequently,pinchorbitethemselves,orbangtheirheads.Theydonotseemtofeelphysicalpainorextremetemperatures.Theymayputthingsintotheirmouthexcessivelyandoftenlosetheirplacewhencopyingordoingschoolwork.
