INTRODUCTION Emotional status is a very important determinant of the quality of life in old age. When the elderly person develops memory related cognitive impairments, emotion becomes nonetheless important for reconnecting him or her with the here and now.Proven efficient in improving mood, cognitive functions, behavior and quality of life for persons with dementia, as well as for their caregivers, reminiscence therapy (RT) uses a wide variety of memory triggers. OBJECTIVE We hereby investigate the nature of different categories of triggers and theiremotional effect when used in RT. METHOD Bibliographic research in international databases. RESULTS Some of the reminiscence triggers are very personal and cultural specific, while some of them are universal, making the strings of any human soul vibrate no matter the distance, difference in educational level, nor the culture they come from. The reminiscence triggers reach one’s memory by hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching. Trigger factors require an attentive selection.Well chosen triggers can trip emotions, driving positive effects. To determine one’s personal and contextual factors, in order to create their specific trigger database for RT, the approach of the International Classification of Functioning can be applied.Customization of the therapeutic process is the approach recomanded by World Health Organization as working therapy for cognitive impairment in Alzheimer Disease,as well as for cognitive stimulation in vascular dementia. These approaches in RT will be tested in a multi-site trial study within the scope of the EU-funded project SENSE-GARDEN. CONCLUSIONS Emotional responsesto RT can be used to develop the most appropriatetherapy for our patient - especially when language is impaired -to improveemotional comfort, increaseself-esteem and stimulate communication, with ultimate goal of maintaininggood involvement in activities of daily living and active participation in community life, as long as possible. The emotional feedback, like a strong hug or a few tears, a shy smile or the glow in the person’s eyes, when the past meets the present and old connections are restored, can be one of the most important assessment measure of RT efficiency, when language impairment is severe.
