From Ken’s Memoirs: Spring Break at Camp MaWaVi
It was springtime April at Gallaudet College in 1947. I was in my Preparatory year,
approaching its end in May. And I was in a state of excitement as Spring Break had arrived
and we at Gallaudet were making arrangements to take a week’s break at camp, just for ten
dollars per person.
A senior from Montana had a driver’s license so he took the responsibility of renting a large
stake truck to tote the men’s personal effects to camp. Gallaudet had an old black cook who
had retired, so we made arrangements to hire him to cook our meals at camp. He rode in the
rental truck with the senior driver and me. The cook lived in a nice, neat house in Southeast D.C.
The camp was at Camp MaWaVi, somewhere near the Occoquan area. This was where the O.S.S. was based,
with training facilities to conduct secret activities. The mess hall was large and neat and the cabins each
housed four campers comfortably. Delicious meals were consistently prepared by the cook. At the end of camp
week there was a pile of beer cans about four feet high, outside the kitchen door for the trash truck to haul
away. Pictures were taken of that pile for memories.
In the evenings games were played -- Cards, Chess, Checkers, Monopoly, etc. The nights were very cool so
roaring fires were made in the fireplace. I volunteered to chop firewood a few times. Coming from California,
I was eager to learn about camping activities. Some early risers kept the fires going. Generally, a good time
was had by all and we felt rested up once we got back to campus.
Dr. Leonard Elstad was the new president that year. He came to camp early one afternoon for a visit. He stood
on the pier and visited with the campers who were swimming. The water was icy cold, and Dr. Elstad
marveled at the bunch of hardy souls plunging into the water. He had come to Gallaudet from Minnesota and
proved to be most efficient in making plans for a greater Gallaudet during his presidency.
Note: The name “MaWaVi” came from “MArylandWAshingtonVIrginia.”

Paleo Shepherd’s Pie
Submitted by Ann Marie Swiatkowski
First, pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.
Ingredients for Crust:
1 1/2 to 2 cups almond flour
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
Melt coconut oil and ghee for 10 sec or so. Mix the flour with
coconut oil and ghee. Put in 8x8 inch pan or 10 inch pie pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes until light brown.
Cook 1 package of one pound grass fed ground beef.
Cut up the veggies:
1 box sliced mushrooms (you can cut them in half if they are too big)
1 whole bell pepper
1 purple onion (cut in half only and cut up cubed and bite sized)
1 zucchini (if you don't have any, you can use 6-7 baby carrots to slice)
2 cloves garlic to mince
You can use any seasoning on veggies. I used Basil and Italian seasoning. Use your judgment to have little
seasoning or more.
Put 2 tsp coconut oil on the skillet to melt and cook veggies until tender.
6 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut up cubed. Cook in boiling water until soft. Mash sweet potatoes with ghee.
You can add cinnamon for flavor if you want.
Layer in order:
Crust
Cooked veggies
Cooked ground beef
Mashed sweet potatoes to smooth on top of pie
Bake at 350 degrees for 15 min or so to heat up.
Very delicious! Yummy!
