The Study of the Holy Spirit:

Pneumatology

Pneuma = wind, breath, spiritLogos = word, matter, thing

Is the Holy Spirit a person? Yes.

OBJECTION- Noun form for “spirit” in the NT is pneuma which is neuter and, therefore, the spirit if correctly referred to as “it” rather than “he.”

CORRECTION- There is no necessary connection in Koine Greek between grammatical gender and personal gender.

Is the Holy Spirit a person? Yes.

INCORRECT DESCRIPTIONS-

The Holy Spirit is the ‘god’ within each of us which we possess via our own natures.

It is an amorphous feeling or active “force”.

Is the Holy Spirit a person? Yes.

TWO REASONS THE SPIRIT IS A PERSON

1. Jesus said He would send “another” in His place (John 14:16). The word for another is allos in Greek and refers to another like Jesus. He referred to Him as parakletos (encourager) which requires that He be a person. Jesus functioned as a parakletos to the disciples.

Is the Holy Spirit a person? Yes.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Jesus referred to Him as wind. (John 3:8)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

This seems to underline the nature of His moving in the hearts of

people to give them life and bring them to faith.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Jesus referred to Him as water. (John 7:27-39)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

This portrays the Spirit as the One who can fulfill the deepest

longings of the heart to know God.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

In Matthew 3:16 the text refers to the Spirit descending out of heaven as a dove.

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

The symbol of a dove probably represents the beginning of an age of blessing and the end of judgment

or perhaps the beginning of new creation.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Jesus inferred the Spirit is clothing. (Acts 1:8)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

This idea involves being dressed by another person so that one is

characterized by the new clothing.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Paul described the Spirit as a guarantee or pledge of the Christian’s glorification(Eph 1:14; 2 Cor 1:21-22)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

The gift of the Spirit I to guarantee that the totality of what has been

promised to us will someday be fulfilled (Rom 8:30)

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Paul described the Spirit as a seal (2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:14; 4:30)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

This speaks to the divine ownership of the Christian which translates into

security and protection.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Luke describes the Spirit like a tongue of fire (Acts 2:3)

Discuss in your Tribond what you think this represents.

The Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts to make a

transformation to holiness a reality.

Revelations of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit was responsible for producing the OT Scriptures. (2 Timothy 3:16)

Clear examples- Ezekiel 2:2, Numbers 24:2, 1 Samuel 10:6,10

Jesus said that David spoke by the Holy Spirit (Matt 22:43, Acts 2:30)

The Holy Spirit produced the NT aswell

Holy Spirit in the OT

The Spirit created the universe (Gen 1:2; Job 26:13)

It is said the Spirit will produce righteousness and justice among the people of God in the Messianic age (Is 11:2-5;32:15-20)

Holy Spirit in Jesus life

The Spirit was involved in the birth of Christ, with the result that, while fully human, was completely sinless. (Matt 1:18; Luke 1:35)

The Spirit was involved in Christ’s anointing for messianic service/baptism (Luke 3:21-22)

Holy Spirit in Jesus life

The Spirit filled Jesus during His temptations (Luke 4:1; John 3:34)

The Spirit revealed the timing and nature of the beginning of His ministry (Luke 4:14,18)

The Spirit was responsible for Christ’s ability to perform miracles and cast out demons (Matt 12:28)

Holy Spirit in Jesus life

The Spirit was involved in both the death and resurrection of Jesus. (Heb 9:14; Rom 1:4; 8:11)

Trouble text made easy- (1 Peter 3:18-20) Pre-incarnate Jesus preached via the Spirit through the mouth of Noah to the wicked before the

flood.

Holy Spirit in the Church

The Spirit is involved in the works of calling, regeneration, uniting the believer with Christ, indwelling, filling, teaching, guiding, empowering, and sanctifying the believer.

His primary ministry is to mediate the presence of Jesus and the knowledge of God to the believer (John 16:13-14)

Holy Spirit’s role in Soteriology

Special or effectual calling- The Spirit uses preaching of the gospel to convict a sinner and bring him/her to faith.

Holy Spirit’s role in Soteriology

Those who are freely chosen by God receive this special call. An unbeliever cannot thwart the effectual call in their hearts.

It is generated, carried along, and brought to fruition by the Spirit. We see this special call in Romans 1:7; 8:30; 11:29; 1 Cor 1:9; 2 Tim 1:9

Holy Spirit’s role in Soteriology

The Holy Spirit indwells the Christian at the moment of faith, uniting them with Christ (John 14:23) and through His indwelling we are sanctified in Christ and increasingly conformed/transformed to His image (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18)

Holy Spirit’s role in Sanctification

The Holy Spirit serves God the Father in our discipline as children of God.

God does not let us wander forever when we stray, but draws us back by His Spirit he leads us into greater experiences of His holiness (Heb 12:10)

Holy Spirit’s role in Sanctification

The Holy Spirit mediates the presence of Jesus to us and unfolds the moral will of God to us (John 16:13-14; 1 Cor 3:16; 6:19-20).

The Spirit uses the people of God (Col 3:16), the word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and circumstances God ordains (Rom 8:28) to mature us in faith.

Holy Spirit’s role in Sanctification

The purpose the Holy Spirit is aiming for in our lives is Christlikeness and the degree to which we are conformed to Him I the degree to which we are sanctified.

He provides opportunities to trust Jesus word or God’s commands and live in them. We grow when we join in the opportunities.

The Holy Spirit’s fruit

The fruit that characterizes the life of a maturing believer are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. (Gal 5:23-24)

All of these are directly associated with a regenerated heart of love.

The Holy Spirit’s gifts

The indwelled Holy Spirit in the believer bestows spiritual gifts, at His discretion for the good of the church body. (1 Cor 12:7,11)

Not every thing that is done in the name of God or spiritual gifts is actually of God (1 Cor 12-14)

The Holy Spirit’s gifts

Five biblical passages explicitly mention the gifts:

1. Romans 12:4-82. 1 Corinthians 1:7, 12-14 (Acts 21:9)

3. Ephesians 4:11-124. Hebrews 2:3-4

5. 1 Peter 4:10-11

No two lists of gifts agree. None of the lists are exhaustive.

The Holy Spirit’s gifts

If we do not use our gift in love, we are outside the will of God and offer no real strengthening of His church.

The presence of the fruit of the Spirit provide necessary context for the proper exercise of spiritual gifts.

Trusting Spirit = maturityMaturity = fruit

Fruit = Powered gifts

The Holy Spirit’s Filling

In the church age the Spirit always indwells the believer but at times something richer occurs.

This is called filling or flowing of the Spirit. This is generally to bring unity amongst believers.

Acts 2:4; 4:8; 4:31; 8:15-17; 9:17; 13:9; 19:1-6Ephesians 5:18

Walking in the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit provides for us the opportunity to walk in…

Unity (Eph 4:1-16)Purity (Eph 4:17-5:17; Gal 5:16-17)Harmony (Eph 5:18-6:9)Protection (Eph 6:10-20)Freedom from flesh(Gal 5:1,18-

21)Humility (Gal 5:25-26) Contentment (Gal 5:25-26)

Walking in the Holy Spirit

When the Holy Spirit provides an opportunity to walk in Him we can take hold of it only through…

The Trinity in The O.T.

Plurality in the Old Testament:The idea of oneness in the Old Testament often carries a plural connotation.

• In Genesis 2:24, man and woman are to become “one flesh.”

• Elohim, used for God 2,570 times in the OT, literally means “the powerful ones.”

• Adonai, used 449 times, means “my lords.”

The Trinity in The O.T.

Eccl. 12:1“Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, ‘I have no delight in them’ (Lit. “Creators”).”Job 35:10“But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker?’ (Lit. “Makers”).”

The Trinity in The O.T.

Isa. 54:5“For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts (Lit. “husbands” and “Makers”).”

The Trinity in The O.T.

Dan. 7:13–14“I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. . . And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed.”

Trinity in the N.T.“Many Christians, without knowing it, hold a false view of the Trinity simply due to their inability to articulate the difference between believing in the Being of God and three persons sharing that one Being. As a result, even orthodox Christian believers slip into an ancient heresy known by many names: modalism, Sabellianism, Patripassionism. Today this same error is called Oneness or the “Jesus Only” position. Whatever its name might be, it is a denial of the Trinity based upon a denial of the distinction between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”
