The Study of the Holy Spirit:

Pneumatology

Pneuma = wind, breath, spiritLogos = word, matter, thing

Is the Holy Spirit a person? Yes.

OBJECTION- Noun form for “spirit” in the NT is pneuma which is neuter and, therefore, the spirit if correctly referred to as “it” rather than “he.”

CORRECTION- There is no necessary connection in Koine Greek between grammatical gender and personal gender.

INCORRECT DESCRIPTIONS-

The Holy Spirit is the ‘god’ within each of us which we possess via our own natures.

It is an amorphous feeling or active “force”.

TWO REASONS THE SPIRIT IS A PERSON

1. Jesus said He would send “another” in His place (John 14:16). The word for another is allos in Greek and refers to another like Jesus. He referred to Him as parakletos (encourager) which requires that He be a person. Jesus functioned as a parakletos to the disciples.

Metaphors for the Holy Spirit

Jesus referred to Him as wind. (John 3:8)

This portrays the Spirit as the One who can fulfill the deepest

longings of the heart to know God.

In Matthew 3:16 the text refers to the Spirit descending out of heaven as a dove.

The symbol of a dove probably represents the beginning of an age of blessing and the end of judgment

or perhaps the beginning of new creation.

Jesus inferred the Spirit is clothing. (Acts 1:8)

This idea involves being dressed by another person so that one is

characterized by the new clothing.

Paul described the Spirit as a guarantee or pledge of the Christian’s glorification(Eph 1:14; 2 Cor 1:21-22)

The gift of the Spirit I to guarantee that the totality of what has been

promised to us will someday be fulfilled (Rom 8:30)

Paul described the Spirit as a seal (2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:14; 4:30)

This speaks to the divine ownership of the Christian which translates into

security and protection.

Luke describes the Spirit like a tongue of fire (Acts 2:3)

The Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts to make a

transformation to holiness a reality.

Revelations of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit was responsible for producing the OT Scriptures. (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Spirit was involved in Christ’s anointing for messianic service/baptism (Luke 3:21-22)

The Spirit filled Jesus during His temptations (Luke 4:1; John 3:34)

The Spirit revealed the timing and nature of the beginning of His ministry (Luke 4:14,18)

The Spirit was responsible for Christ’s ability to perform miracles and cast out demons (Matt 12:28)

The Spirit was involved in both the death and resurrection of Jesus. (Heb 9:14; Rom 1:4; 8:11)

Holy Spirit in the Church

The Spirit is involved in the works of calling, regeneration, uniting the believer with Christ, indwelling, filling, teaching, guiding, empowering, and sanctifying the believer.

His primary ministry is to mediate the presence of Jesus and the knowledge of God to the believer (John 16:13-14)

Holy Spirit’s role in Soteriology

Special or effectual calling- The Spirit uses preaching of the gospel to convict a sinner and bring him/her to faith.

Those who are freely chosen by God receive this special call. An unbeliever cannot thwart the effectual call in their hearts.

It is generated, carried along, and brought to fruition by the Spirit. We see this special call in Romans 1:7; 8:30; 11:29; 1 Cor 1:9; 2 Tim 1:9

The Holy Spirit indwells the Christian at the moment of faith, uniting them with Christ (John 14:23) and through His indwelling we are sanctified in Christ and increasingly conformed/transformed to His image (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18)

Holy Spirit’s role in Sanctification

The Holy Spirit serves God the Father in our discipline as children of God.

God does not let us wander forever when we stray, but draws us back by His Spirit he leads us into greater experiences of His holiness (Heb 12:10)

The Holy Spirit mediates the presence of Jesus to us and unfolds the moral will of God to us (John 16:13-14; 1 Cor 3:16; 6:19-20).

The Spirit uses the people of God (Col 3:16), the word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and circumstances God ordains (Rom 8:28) to mature us in faith.

He provides opportunities to trust Jesus word or God’s commands and live in them. We grow when we join in the opportunities.

The Holy Spirit’s fruit

The fruit that characterizes the life of a maturing believer are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. (Gal 5:23-24)

All of these are directly associated with a regenerated heart of love.

The Holy Spirit’s gifts

The indwelled Holy Spirit in the believer bestows spiritual gifts, at His discretion for the good of the church body. (1 Cor 12:7,11)

Not every thing that is done in the name of God or spiritual gifts is actually of God (1 Cor 12-14)

Five biblical passages explicitly mention the gifts:

1. Romans 12:4-82. 1 Corinthians 1:7, 12-14 (Acts 21:9)

3. Ephesians 4:11-124. Hebrews 2:3-4

5. 1 Peter 4:10-11

No two lists of gifts agree. None of the lists are exhaustive.

If we do not use our gift in love, we are outside the will of God and offer no real strengthening of His church.

The presence of the fruit of the Spirit provide necessary context for the proper exercise of spiritual gifts.

The Holy Spirit’s Filling

In the church age the Spirit always indwells the believer but at times something richer occurs.

This is called filling or flowing of the Spirit. This is generally to bring unity amongst believers.
