SENIORB-zzSERVING CIT IZENS OF FULTON COUNTY 60 YEARS & OVER
• fulton county senior center ProGrAMs & services •
Entering the world in July 1923 as a fraternal twin at only 3 pounds and with two front teeth, Ruth Zimmerman’s feisty spirit has served her well over the years. This wife, mother, journalist, antique collector and historian is a Fulton County senior who has lived in Wauseon since 1941.
Also a pioneer, Ruth and her husband Wayne opened the first classroom in northwest Ohio for special needs children in 1953. After the oldest two of the Zimmermans’ four daughters were diagnosed with Batten Disease, a rare neurological disorder, Ruth and Wayne rallied local parents and the community to open a school that would eventually become today’s Fulton County Board of Developmental Disabilities.Years later, Ruth, along with three other Wauseon women, started the first Fulton County Senior Center. Today, Ruth receives home-delivered meals from the Senior Center (ham loaf is a favorite), enjoys reading in the sunroom of her historic home, snitches sweets (“I’ve got chocolate in every drawer in my kitchen and in my pantry”), likes to listen to country and bluegrass music (“Sometimes I play it so loud I don’t hear the doorbell”), watches movies (“I have many of Clint Eastwood’s”), loves to host visitors and enjoys dining out with her two daughters and their families.
As 2019 dawns, Ruth hopes for a cure for Batten Disease and offers this New Year’s advice, “Just find something funny, stay cool and go with the flow!”
SENIOR NEWS
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
TRY PICKLEBALL IN OUR GYMIn recent years, Pickleball has gained popularity in northwest Ohio. If you’ve always wanted to try Pickleball or you are a seasoned player, you have four opportunities to play on Tuesdays in January. The gym will be open on January 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 8:00 am to 10:30 am for Pickleball. A local senior, passionate about this sport, will set up the net, loan the equipment and explain the rules. This active game is for two or four players, uses a paddle and a Wiffle-type ball and combines elements of table tennis, badminton and tennis. Beginners welcome. To keep melting snow off the court, please bring a change of shoes.
january, 2019SENIOR B-zzPaGE 2
WINTER WEATHER ALERTSHave you taken action and stocked up on a few shelf-stable meals in your kitchen in the unlikely event that our Senior Center would be closed due to bad weather? Also, we thank you in advance for providing a safe way to bring your meal to your door. Your meal delivery driver appreciates it when you make their safety a priority and arrange to keep your driveway and sidewalks clear of snow and ice. If Senior Center activities or meals are canceled due to bad weather, you can expect to receive a phone call from our automated phone system. One Call Now will provide you with instructions in the event of a Level 2 or Level 3 snow emergency. Level 2 means meals, activities and transportation are canceled. Level 3 means all sites are closed.
HOME DELIVERED MEALSIf you receive a home-delivered meal, please understand that we value your flexibility. Your meal might arrive slightly behind schedule at times. Weather and road construction are factors. The number of meals being delivered by one driver on a particular day often varies and might create a delay for you. We encourage our drivers to take a few moments to make sure the senior receiving a meal is at home and well. Families rely on our meal delivery drivers to check on the welfare of senior family members. In most cases, the driver is simply running behind and has not forgotten you. Please wait to call our Senior Center until 1:00 pm to report that your meal has not yet arrived.
HELP US HELP YOUHas your phone number changed? Have you moved? Has your email address changed? Is information for your contact person out of date? Please contact us with your up-to-date information. Also, if you currently receive the B-zz newsletter by mail and have an email address, would you consider receiving the newsletter via email instead of regular mail to help us save money on postage?
DID YOU KNOWSimply taking a brisk 30-40 minute walk most days offers the following stunning rewards:
-A 35% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's and other dementias.
-A 30 - 50% reduction in the risk of premature death.
-A 35% reduction in the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
-A 30% reduction in arthritic knee pain.
-Relief from mild to moderate depression on par with prescription antidepressants.
-Significant protection from cancers of the breast, colon, and uterus, along with significant improvement in the survivorship of breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
Above information is from Dr. Ann’s Wellness Bulletin, Dr. Ann Kulze, M.D.
The gym at the Fulton County Senior Center is available for walking when no other programs are taking place in the gym.
