The mobile industry in India is divided between the two technologies GSM and CDMA. While the earlier service providers had accept the GSM technology, the new players have been using CDMA technology.

It is necessary for us to understand the basic differentiation of the two technologies as they may have an impact on the Forensics.

HISTORY

CDMA was first used during World War II by the English allies at jamming transmissions. GSM was first introduced in 1991 and GSM was the only mobile communication system present in the market.

ABOUT GSM

GSM is a form of multiplexing, which divides the available bandwidth of the different channels. GSM is a combination of Time and Frequency- Division Multiple Access (TDMA/FDMA).

Each of these carrier frequencies is then divided in time, using a TDMA scheme.

ABOUT CDMA

CDMA is a form of multiplexing , which allows the use of a particular frequency for a number of signals.

It is a cellular technology that uses spread-spectrum techniques.

A-to-D in spread spectrum technology. Audio input is first digitized into binary elements.

Why CDMA?

• high quality voice service

• high speed data/Internet

• excellent network coverage and capacity

• inherently very secure/difficult to intercept

Multiple Access in CDMA:

– Each user is assigned a unique PN code.

– Users are seperated by code not by time slot and freq slot.

– Each user transmits its information by spreading with unique code.

– Direct Sequence spread spectrum is used.

• more than 70% of mobile phones use GSM

Advantages of GSM • Communication – wireless communication; support for voice and data services

• Total mobility – international access

• Worldwide connectivity • High capacity – better frequency efficiency, smaller cells, more customers per cell

Disadvantage of GSM

• reduced concentration while driving • abuse of private data possible • high complexity of the system • several incompatibilities within the GSM standards

ADVANTAGES OF CDMA:

Since bandwidth is the major problem. CDMA has a clear advantage over GSM in these. The number of channels that can be allocated in a given bandwidth is comparatively higher for CDMA than for GSM.

The cost of setting up a CDMA network is also comparatively less than the GSM network.
