Act 1The Type 1 Solidness
of the Self, as told by Brickhead* If everything we’ve ever experienced were
made of false solidness, what would true solidness be?“All appearance and disappearance pre-supposes change
against a changeless background at once recognizable as the original
existence.” Nisargadatta Maharaj
At the Movies
with the
3 Spiritual Stooges
Brickhead was also fascinated by a single uniform substance - the screen. Whereas the light was energetic and creative, the screen was merely solid.
The light stands for consciousness and the screen for self, and no two things more opposite will ever exist.
Airhead had seen the beam of light from the projector, and he marveled that a single uniform substance could be responsible for all of the colors, shapes and motions in the movie.
Afterward, Knucklehead told his friends that he’d been fascinated by the story of Truth portrayed as something tangible and substantial, rather than just an abstraction.
One day, Brickhead, Airhead and Knucklehead went to their very first movie. It was called ‘The Diamond of Truth’.

AClassification System for
Spiritual Seekers
Hi, I’m Brickhead and my color is blue, so I’ll be happy to be your host wherever you see blue.
I also started as a Knucklehead, but unlike my friend, Airhead, I feel that the ultimate truth is a fullness of fullness, something which is dense, substantial and solid in a way that nothing else can be.
I believe that inner languages are nested, and that a part of me is always speaking each of them in a simultaneous way. I call this ‘language 1’, ‘the stationary language’.
Hello, I’m Airhead. My color is green, so anywhere you see green, I’ll be your host.
I started out as a Knucklehead. I’m fascinated by consciousness, and I feel that the ultimate truth must be something very ‘thin’, like pure awareness or perhaps emptiness.
I believe that we’re always moving through points of view in a sequential way, and I call this approach ‘language 2’, aka ‘the vertical language’.
Hi, my name is Knucklehead. My color is red, and anywhere you see red I’ll be your host.
A Knucklehead is anyone foolish enough to have been bitten by the spirituality bug. I believe that each person sees the world in a certain way, separate from others.
I like to approach spirituality the way I approach other things, using logic and rationality, which I call ‘language 3’, or ‘the horizontal language’.
A Simple Testto see if you’re a Knucklehead, an Airhead or
a Brickhead
1. have you been bitten by the spirituality bug?
nocongratulations!
you don’t need this stuff
yesyou Knucklehead !
2. do you feel that the ultimate Truth is
something ‘thin’, like consciousness or emptiness?
yesyou’re an Airhead !
3. do you feel that the ultimateTruth
is something solid and substantial, like a
dense background or a fullness-of-fullness?
no
yesyou’re a Brickhead
like me !
The 3 Types of Solidness
“Everything should be made
as simple as possible,
but not one bit simpler.”
Airhead ontype 2 solidnessThis is called the
center of the spiritual heart. It’s stationary relative to the subject of experience, which is attracted to it and orbits it in non-dual devotion.
It’s created by the subject after subject passes near the self and then attempts to emulate self’s true solidness, filling the empty void:
Knucklehead ontype 3 solidness
This is the familiar
feeling of i-ness, the subject of experience, also known as the ego and the i-thought.
It has a center and it moves around the life-cycle of thought, as each new though begins its life near the self and then moves away from it before expiring. self
self
Brickhead onType 1 Solidness
Also called True Mass, this is the only type of solidness which is capitalized because it’s the only one which actually exists.
True Mass is nothing more or less than dense existence. It has no center (or center-everywhere), and functions as the universal screen or back-ground of experience.

solidness
“First one sees the self as objects”
Ramana
Self is first experienced as the sense or feeling of i-ness at the center of the mind, as well as all of the objects it projects and then relates to in one’s inner and outer environments.

Airhead on Experiencing type 2
solidness
“Then one sees the self as a void.”
RamanaSelf is next
experienced as an empty void (before i-ness passes near the self), and then as a ‘full void’ or center of the spiritual heart (after i-ness passes near and is informed by the presence of the self).

The 3 Modelsof Self-
Knowledge
&The 3 Laws
of Solidness
each model may make it easier to
recognizea type of solidness
Model 1Introduced by
Brickhead
Considering the background of experience makes it easier to recognize the Type 1 Solidness, theTrue Mass of the self.
The first law of solidness says that background must always be more solid than foreground, and therefore only that which is the most solid may serve as the universal background of experience.
Model 3Introduced by Knucklehead
Considering the journey around the ‘Cycle of Self-Knowledge’ makes it easier to recognize the type 3 solidness of the subject of experience.
The third law of solidness (aka the law of no context) says that each level of reality is of a single piece.
self
Model 2Introduced by
AirheadConsidering the
bottom half of the cycle makes it easier to recognize the type 2 solidness of the center of the spiritual heart.
The second law of solidness says that, as no true distinctions may be made within the false, every thing which does not exist is of a single piece,
andeveryThing
which does existis of another single
piece

1 (self)or 2 (self + subject in non-
dual devotion)
counter-intuitive point 1
self is solid existence, the ultimate object. we’ve
misunderstood, on the one hand, that existence is an
object or commodity rather than just a property, and
on the other hand, what it truly means to be solid.
counter-intuitive point 2
because it has no center and a different quality of mass, the self does not attract the subject of
experience. (this is why we’ll need the spiritual
heart in act 2.)
counter-intuitive point 3
although self is the most ‘inner’ of all objects, it may first be noticed ‘outside’, as the screen or background of the experience of the
world.

First IntermissionHi, it’s Brickhead. I hope you enjoyed Act
1. While you’re stretching your legs, please check out this exercise to help recognize Type 1 solidness, the true solidness or true mass of the self. Imagine that you’re an
astronaut floating out in space, and that you’re the only object anywhere in the universe so you’re not being pulled in any direction. Now imagine that you’re surrounded by billions of stars and planets. Since their centers of mass are equally distributed, you’re still not being pulled in any direction. Recognizing the presence of the self is similar to recognizing this center-everywhere mass. But the true mass of the self does not exert an attractive pull on the false mass of the subject because they’re of different qualities (true mass vrs false mass). This is why we need the spiritual heart discussed in the next act.
state of mind lucid dream
number of elements
exactly 2 in the spiritual heart
exactly 3 in the mystic mind
(2=3 where they meet)
counter-intuitive point 1
although it functions as the emulation or ‘forecho’
of the self, the spiritual heart is not created by
the self but by the subject.
counter-intuitive point 2
although it occupies the 2nd position on the cycle of
self-knowledge, the spiritual heart is the
3rd element to be experienced.
counter-intuitive point 3
all of the property of existence is consumed by
the commodity of existence leaving none for anything else. so, just as
the generic waterin a mirage is as non-
existent as the specific shapes it
takes, the generic spiritual heart is as non-existent as its shapes in
the world.

The Two Faces of the Void
The mind-mediated search for truth (dotted arrow) ends with an empty void, but each new cycle begins with a fullness (star) informed by passing near the self.
Orbiting The Spiritual Heart
Because the spiritual heart has a center, the subject is able to locate and resonate with it, thus giving the subject something to orbit near the self & preparing it to transfer its devotion from the spiritual heart to the self.
A Glimpse of SelfAs it passes near the
self, awareness tries to emulate self’s true solidness at a localized point (star). The empty void thus becomes the ‘full void’ or spiritual heart (right circle) whose center is the dense memory of the self.

pictured. The localized type 3 mass of the subject is attracted to the localized type 2 mass of the spiritual heart until it‘s able to recognize the non-localized Type 1 mass of the self.
The Point of Free Will
When awareness flees the experience of the void, it’s reborn at the point of free will (pfw), where the spiritual heart (sh) meets the mystic mind (mm) and all inner languages are spoken.

SignificantWhatever is most precious to each person occupies the center of their spiritual heart. It may be a loved one, a teacher or something else entirely.
SubstantialAs one’s love for this center grows, it become more substantial in their awareness.
SolidAs it attracts the subject more and more, it iteratively acquires a solidness all its own.
Hi, it’s Airhead. I hope you enjoyed Act 2. While you’re swinging your arms, please join me in this exercise to help recognize type 2 solidness, the center of the spiritual heart.

there are no laws to govern them.
counter-intuitive point 2
although it’s called ‘subject’,
it’s actually just the subtlest object which the
mind is capable of considering at a given
time.
counter-intuitive point 3
although it’s devoted to the
spiritual heart, it is the subject which creates
the spiritual heart in the first place.
