1 Introduction
El e c t ro d e p o s i t io n o f m e t a ls , p a r t i c u l a r ly f ro m
aqueous so lu t ions , i s an a t t rac t ive method fo r the
recove ry and recyc l ing o f meta l ions in ma ny indus -
tr ies such as plat ing, metal f in ishing and electronics .
O v e r t h i r t y m e t a l s c a n b e e l e c t ro d e p o s i t e d f ro m
a q u e o u s s o l u t i o n s i n c l u d i n g m a n y p re c i o u s m e t a l s
a n d h e a v y m e t a ls . M a n y o f t he s e m e t a ls p o s e e n v i ro n -
men ta l hazards and leg i s la t ion genera l ly imposes
min im um d ischarge leve l s regard ing quan t i ty and
concen t ra t ion . A s tandard app roac h to sa t i s fy these
requ i remen ts i s to p rec ip i t a te the meta l ions as
o x i d e / h y d ro x i d e a n d p ro c e s s t h e s u b s e q u e n t s l u d g e
p r i o r t o d i s p o s a l o r f u r th e r t r e a t m e n t . I n m a n y c a s e s
the so lu t ion to be t rea ted wi l l con ta in more than one
meta l ion , fo r example tha t p roduced in the d i s so lu -
t ion o f spen t Ni /C d b a t te r i es [1 ]. In th i s example there
i s a requ i reme n t to recover the ind iv idua l meta l s sepa-
ra te ly to enab le e f f i c ien t economic recovery . I t i s ,
therefo re , una t t rac t ive to adop t p rec ip i t a t ion to
r e c o v e r t h e m e t a l f r o m s o l u t i o n , r a t h e r a m e t h o d
such as e lec t rodep os i t ion has a t t rac t ions i f se lec tive
depos i t ion o f ind iv idua l meta l s can be ach ieved . The
a re a o f m e t a l r e c o v e ry b y e l e c t ro d e p o s it i o n h a s b e e n
a sub jec t o f recen t rev iews [2 ] . There have been severa l
s t ud i e s o f e l e c t ro d e p o s it i o n f ro m m i x e d m e t a l i o n
so lu t ions , fo r example C u /N i [3 ] , Pb /C u [4] and Z n /
Cu [3 ] . In many cases , espec ia l ly those invo lv ing Cu ,
the d i f fe rence in s tanda rd e lec t rode po ten t ia l ind ica tes
tha t se lec t ive e lec t rodepos i t ion i s e f fec t ive and
research has demons t ra ted th i s to be t rue . In o ther
cases , such as Ni /C o the c loseness o f the s tand ard
po ten t ia l s ind ica tes tha t se lec tive e lec t rodep os i t ion
wil l be m ore difficul t.
I n t h e w o rk r e p o r t e d h e r e t h e e x t e n t, b o t h t h e o re t i-
ca l ly and exper imen ta l ly , to wh ich mix tu res o f meta l
ca t ions in was te waters can be separa ted as meta l s
us ing success ive e lec t rode pos i t ion has been exp lo red .
F o r e x a m p l e , i f w e c o n s i d e r w a t e r c o n t a i n i n g C d (n )
and Ni (n ) i t i s impor tan t to es tab l i sh the concen t ra -
t ion to wh ich Cd(I0 can be reduced in the so lu t ion
b y e l e c t ro d e p o s i t i o n w i t h o u t d e p o s i t i n g N i a n d t h e
p u r i t y o f t h e e l e c t ro d e p o s i te d C d . P re v i o u s w o rk o f
t h is s o r t h a s b e e n c a r ri e d o u t b y W a l s h a n d G a b e
