They followed it to find their

freedom from

slavery.

The term Railroad was used because

on this railroad, the slaves were

called “Passengers.”

Those that helped to guide the

slaves were called

“Conductors.”

The places where the

slaves rested along the way were

called “Stations.”

The routes were started to aid the runaway slaves on

their journey to freedom.

The safe houses

helped keep the slaves

fed, clothed, and offered them shelter.

Slaves hid in old barns and under

hay covered wagons while on

the run.

These are secret underground

hideaways in the Station houses.
