One of the best kept secrets in the history of A&M is the story of the True Texans and the Swastikas.
These societies, around in the twenties and the thirties, were banned from the campus. But members of the two societies did not disband. Since membership in these societies became an offense punishable by expulsion, they began functioning in secret.
The societies carried on their activities until World War II when most of the student members left for different parts of the world, causing dispersion of the groups.
In the early fifties, however, A&M police again rounded up members. Apparently the organizations had survived the war.
Since they were secret societies, those who were not members do not know the rictuals, rites or aims. Those who were, would not admit it-
The two societies were first organized under different names and were recognized as social clubs.
The administration called down the societies when members were

Elton’s Greatest aren’tBy JOHN VANORE
If you had a car with AM radio and wanted FM plus a tape deck would you run out and buy a second car? Of course not! And if you had, say, five albums by Elton John and wanted a recording of “Your Song”, would you buy an album that contained mostly cuts from the other five albums? If your answer is yes, you’re hopeless. What you’d do is buy “Elton John,” his first American (second British) release, and get nine other great tunes.
So what’s the big deal with Elton Reginald John cranking out a “Greatest Hits album? Surely any artist who feels confident enough to

Provide that the Legislature shall provide for local retirement systems created by any city or county for its officers and employees and shall further provide for a state-wide system of benefits for officers and employees of counties or other political subdivsions of the State which may voluntarily participate, and
to further provide that a state-wide system of benefits shall be provided for officers and employees of cities which may voluntarily participate.
The wording of the proposed amendment as it will appear on the ballot is as follows:
“The constitutional amendment revising and consolidating provisions relating to state and local retirement systems and programs and providing for a maximum state contribution to state systems of 10 percent of the aggregate compensation paid to individuals.”
NUMBER TWO ON THE BALLOT

put out a double (Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road) without fear of spreading himself too thin can do without this waste of vinyl!
I’ll tell you why — this is Elton’s last album on MCA, and he’s moving to his own label, so he sloughed a “greatest hits” album off onto MCA, which in turn is sloughing it off onto the public. Its primary excuse for existing is to fulfill a contract requirement.
So, aside from that, what else is wrong with “Elton John’s Greatest Hits”? It’s not representative, that’s what. Such albums should not be a mere collection of top-selling singles; rather, they should try to follow the musical development and growth of an artist. This was the concept behind “Winwood”, a double which chronicled Stevie
I Winwood’s progress from Spencer j Davis Group to Blind Faith, and his I accomplishments as a musical prodigy. Even “The Worst of Jefferson Airplane” did this in a rudimentary fashion.
But Gus Dudgeon, Elton’s producer, chose to ignore two consecutively released albums, “Tumbleweed Connection and “Madman Across the Water”, which represent in their combined form a considerable time span left unaccounted for.
After admitting the fact that “Tumbleweed Connection” is my favorite Elton John album, I still can’t see why they left out numbers of the calibre of “Burn Down the Mission” or “Levon”. But, then again, I always maintained that his best stuff was from the slower repertoire. So you could guess pretty easily that I would can songs of the- “Honky Cat” genre.
Enough of this opinionated diatribe. The meat of the matter is, we all know that Elton John is a fine musician who plays some great music, but who needs two recordings of some cuts to the exclusion of other? My advice is to buy the original albums and cash in on a wealth of music which could never hope to make a greatest hits album, hut

The reason for choosing the name swastika is unknown. It is doubtful that there was any connection with Hitler’s political party, since it was almost unknown at the time. The swastika is an ancient Indian symbol of friendship.
Then these societies began to influence life at A&M. One of the football coaches reportedly left the school because of disunity in his team caused by loyalty to the two societies.
Others are skeptical about this. “Whenever there is a losing athletic team people try to find reasons,” says a former student.
“We won the national championships in 1939, and the next year practically the same team returned hut we didn’t peak again. So people started rumors.”
It is difficult to make valid decisions twenty-plus years later, and the difficulty is compounded by the death of administrators who first banned the organizations.

which is, nonetheless, great music in its own right.
While we re on the subject of Elton John and record company rip-offs, did you know that, while you were being subjected to the chiming, strung-out version of “Lucy in the Skies”, which even had John Lennon (wow!) sitting in on the sessions, a true gem of a Christmas song was being withheld, never to he released?
Yup, there are in existence at this time a dozen or so copies of a song called “Ho Ho Ho on tape, and I got my mits on one of the fifth or sixth generation copies of the studio outtake. What’s it like? It sounds a hit like a hunch of drunk Ags sitting around a pitcher in Ralph’s (Oops, Sparkey’s), making up a Christmas song.
But it’s good! ft’s lighthearted like a Christmas song should be, Elton’s piano is prominent, it’s funny, and it sure heats the hell out of “White Christmas”. The lyrics open like this’
Sitting here on Christmas Eve with a brandy in my hand,I ve had a few too many and it’s getting hard to stand.I keep hearing noises from my fireplace—I must he going crazy or the brandy’s won the race.
How can you go wrong with a song like that? But you’ll never know— MCA stifled it for a number of reasons, one of which was that Elton and the gang were stone drunk when they decided to go into the studio and record it. But just think of it every time you hear the “Lucy in the Skies rehash.
