Making ConnectionsThe Book of Exodus in the Old Testament tells us a very beautiful story of friendship between God and the Israelites. It also tells the story of Moses,

the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt, and ultimately, the giving of the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments is the beginning of a new life for

the Israelite people. It also marks the beginning of a

beautiful relationship between them and God. God started

and strengthened a beautiful “friendship” - covenant - with

His people, the Israelites.

Making Connections

Understanding the Ten Commandments

1. The Ten Commandments reveal who God is.

God gave the Ten Commandments to help the people understand what He wants for them. God used the Ten Commandments to reveal

or show them that He is truly a God.

2. The Ten Commandments were given during a time of liberation/ freedom.

The Israelites were free from the Egyptians. No more slaves. God gave the Ten

Commandments as sets of laws that can help them become a better nation and a holy

community.

Understanding the Ten Commandments

3. The Ten Commandments were given as part of a covenant with God.

A covenant is a special agreement between human beings or with God that involves life-long commitment,

faithfulness, and love.

God made a covenant with the Israelites, His Chosen People.

Understanding the Ten Commandments

examples of a covenant

Understanding the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are like ropes. They did not hold captive the Israelites. They were life-lines to the Heart

of God.

Understanding the Ten Commandments

4. Obedience to the Ten Commandments was the response of the Israelites.

To be faithful to their covenant, the Israelites needed to obey the commandments. God

loved them and they willingly loved Him back through obeying the Ten Commandments.

Understanding the Ten Commandments

IN SHORT

GOD GAVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS WHEN THE ISRAELITES NEEDED HIM MOST.

Who is God - “Yhwh" - “I Am who Am”?

How can we unite ourselves?

How can we be faithful to God?

Is God with us in our journey?

complains - “long journey”

no food - no water - we can just remain

as slaves at least we have food and water

let us worship the golden calf and other idols

the others are fighting/ stealing from us

SOMETHING TO CHEW ON

If the Ten Commandments helped the Israelites, can they also help you?
