SURVIVABILITY IN THE FOCUS
Survivability of the entire ship is the key issue when we are thinking
about the future of the European marine industry. This is an actu-
al focus when shipping and shipbuilding companies are designing
and building bigger and bigger vessels where thousands of people
are working and having fun.
Number of countries has already combined their research ef-
forts in their willingness to participate in the SURSHIP co-operation.
SURSHIP comes from the words “Survivability of Ships” and the aim
is to develop methods, technologies and rules for practical applica-
tion, which will significantly improve safety and survivability of ships
as well as risk prediction.
We Finns are building really large vessels in Turku. The inter-
national classification companies are working in Finland and taking
care of the marine safety. But the survivability of the entire ship is
a bigger question than we can see in this moment, when we are,
with good luck, living without any really big cruise vessel accident.
In the nuclear industry Harrisburg and then Chernobyl in the fi-
nal stage opened eyes on how important is PSA (Probability Safety
Analyses). There is, at the moment, a big need of similar risk evalu-
ation in the marine industry.
International Maritime Organisation IMO and its Maritime Safe-
ty Committee do good work by advancing the knowledge of the be-
haviour of the damaged ships. SURSHIP is also a good opening for
the co-operation in the marine safety organising. No country can
do it alone but together we can do it.
We do not want any more Titanics and Estonias, and surviva-
bility is also a question of European shipbuilding competitiveness in
the long run.

FULL STEAM AHEAD
Yrjö Julin steers the course for Aker Yards
“I am very satisfied that the Board
of Directors saw it fit to cross the
boundaries of nationality with regards to
this appointment,” Julin himself comment-
ed at the time.
Of course, for those in the know, the
selection of Julin (49) hardly comes as a
surprise. After all, Julin has been with Ak-
er Yards since 2002, first as President of
Aker Finnyards and since 2004 as Presi-
dent of Aker Yards Cruise & Ferries Busi-
ness Area. Within a period of five years,
his career has been on a steady climb in-
side the organisation.
A quick comparison: When Yrjö Ju-
lin started as the head of operations at
the Rauma shipyard in 2002, there were
1,000 people working under him. Current-
ly, as the CEO of the entire Group, Julin has
20,000 employees around the world.
Julin now occupies a position that
is quite remarkable by Finnish standards.
Aker Yards is Europe’s largest shipbuilding
History was made as Yrjö Julin was
appointed the President & CEO of
Aker Yards in June 2007. After all,
Aker Yards is a Norwegian listed
company and it is quite unprece-
dented for big international corpo-
rations to recruit Finnish executives
for their top positions.
group and one of the world’s four largest
shipbuilders. The Group manufactures so-
phisticated cruise ships, ferries, merchant
vessels, as well as offshore and specialised
vessels at 18 shipyards in eight countries.
MAKING THE ROUNDS
Since summer 2006, Julin has been over-
seeing shipyards in Finland and France, but
he was not so familiar with many other in-
ternational operations of the Group as he
took the helm. Since his appointment, Ju-
lin has been travelling from one Aker Yards
shipyard to another - Germany, Norway,
Romania, Ukraine, France…
While travelling around the world,
Julin has had the opportunity to talk with
the management and personnel of the
shipyards. In this way, the new CEO was
able to get a clearer view of the big pic-
ture. While visiting each shipyard, he also
took time to communicate his message to
the employees.
“From my perspective, the visits have
been very interesting and the reception has
been excellent all over,” Julin says.
Julin succeeds Karl Erik Kjelstad who
served as the Aker Yards CEO from Janu-
ary 2003. Kjelstad left Aker Yards to join
the executive management team of Aker
ASA. Julin says that under Kjelstad’s lead-
ership, Aker Yards has become renowned
for its bold combination of strategic and
operational development. Now the time
has come to digest the purchases made on
Kjelstad’s watch and fully integrate them
into the Group.
“It is a different time period altogeth-
er and one that I believe is well suited for
my personality and type of leadership,”
Julin says.
SIGNIFICANT OWNERSHIP CHANGE
The “Julin Era” has kicked off with some
extra excitement. Eyebrows were raised
around the industry as the Korean pow-
erhouse STX announced it had acquired
39.2 per cent of Aker Yards in October.
The Aker Yards Board replied it will review
strategic alternatives to maximise the value
of Aker Yards. As of yet, STX has not re-
quested changes in the Board. According
to Julin, dialogue has been initiated with
the Koreans and the first meeting has al-
ready taken place.
Julin has stated that his vision for Ak-
er Yards is to continue building its global
leading position in both the offshore and
specialised vessel and cruise vessel mar-
ket and to continue the repositioning of
the merchant vessel business to be a niche
player for specialised merchant vessels.
According to Julin, Aker Yards has
very broad-spanning expertise and this is
something that the Group cherishes and
wants to hold onto. Constant drive for im-
provement is another characteristic of the
Nordic company.

seatec 2008 5
“In the cruise vessel business, for ex-
ample, we moved from the number three
spot to number one, and we are looking
to hold that position. With regards to off-
shore and specialised vessels, we are the
clear market leader.”
STRATEGIC CHALLENGE
On the other hand, looking at the mer-
chant vessel business, we may be a big
player in Europe but a small player in glo-
bal comparison, Julin says, referring to the
Asian ship-building giants, such as Japan,
South Korea and China.
“This is a strategic challenge for us:
how to find the right niche segment for
us in this market. It is clear that standard
products can not win the day for us in
Asia,” he says.
In the CEO’s playbook, taking full ad-
vantage of the opportunities provided by a
global marketplace takes precedence. The
company has various fortresses around the
world and it fights for market share in mar-
kets that differ - often quite significantly
- from each other. This diversity ensures
that business is always good - somewhere
out there.
Julin says that the ability to move fast
also counts a lot in the business. This ex-
tends also to the decision-making in the
company: Aker Yards, while known for
building massive vessels, favours extremely
light administration where corporate bu-
reaucracy is cut to bare minimum.
“We have only about 25 people
working in the Group’s headquarters in
Oslo,” Julin reveals. Just about any oth-
er corporation of relative size could eas-
ily employ hundreds - or thousands - of
HQ white-collars. The main office opera-
tions will become even more efficient, as
the Group will move to new headquarters
in May 2008.
“INNOVATION IS THE ONLY WAY”
Julin feels that Aker Yards’ slogan “pre-
ferred for innovation” pinpoints exactly
what it takes to succeed in today’s mar-
ketplace.
“We develop the vessel types our-
selves, having around 800 shipbuilding en-
gineers and designers on our payroll, and
we utilise the services of another 800 out-
side experts as well.”
Julin says that commitment to inno-
vation is simply a must in the Group’s cho-
sen segments.
“Innovation is the only way for a Eu-
ropean company to be successful in the
market today. We must continue to de-
sign and produce the required innovative
solutions ourselves,” he says, remarking
once again that standard products will on-
ly carry you so far.
Aker Yards has managed to put to-
gether a record-breaking order backlog.
For Aker Yards Cruise & Ferries, for in-
stance, the total value of order backlog
in November was NOK 44,866 million. At
the Finnish shipyards the order books are
full all the way to the autumn of 2010. The
French shipyard has a similar situation.
As a result of the continued very heat-
ed situation in the shipbuilding industry -
and continued high loading in the Finnish
operations - Aker Yards revised its delivery
program for ferries in Finland further on
in December 2007. Due to this, several of
the projects will be delivered some weeks
or months later than planned. ■

Aker Yards is known for building the finest luxury cruise ships in the world. On 1 March 2007, the company
took on a new challenge of unprecedented proportions as the construction of the first Genesis-class vessel
kicked off. At present, Aker Yards, Turku has in its orderbook two Genesis class and one Freedom class
luxury cruise vessels – or rather, “floating resorts”. Commissioned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the
Genesis vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The price tag for the two cruise
ships is two billion euro.
8 seatec 2008
”T he delivery of the first vessel
will take place in the fall 2009,
with the ‘test drive’ scheduled for sum-
mer 2009,” confirms Toivo Ilvonen, Vice
President, Projects, for Aker Yards. Ilvonen
serves also as the Project Manager for the
Genesis-class project.
How to describe the sheer size of
these luxury cruise ships? “Colossal” and
“overwhelming” are the first terms that
spring to mind. Aker Yards is convinced
that with these two vessels the compa-
ny is now taking an enormous step into
the future - combining bold design, dar-
ing innovation and technological advance-
ments, the Genesis-class vessels will be a
true wonder to behold.
Both cruise ships will be 47 metres
wide and 360 metres long; height over the
water line will be 65 metres. Each ship is
built to accommodate the needs of 5,400
passengers and feature as many as 3,000
crew members.
CHALLENGE LIKE NO OTHER
Yrjö Julin, President & CEO of Aker Yards,
has commented that Genesis is a big chal-
lenge for the company, with issues rang-
ing from the size to the complexity of the
numerous technical innovations.
Julin also remarked that the word
“breathtaking” might be an understate-
ment as well – these seafaring giants will
be 36 metres longer than the height of
Eiffel tower, weighing 12 times more than
the Parisian pride. Juha Heikinheimo, Pres-
ident of Aker Yards’ business area Cruise
& Ferries and President of Aker Yards in
Finland, has characterised the project as
a “two billion euro assignment” which is
a real tour de force for the Finnish ma-
rine industries.

Since March 2007, the Turku shipyard
has been hard at work with the project.
The keel block of the ship was lowered in-
to the graving dock on 11 December 2007.
As it happens, also the keel block carried
historic proportions - with a width of 47
metres, it is the widest the Turku shipyards
have ever produced.
A number of VIP’s and media repre-
sentatives were present, as the keel block
was lifted into the graving dock, serenaded
by a flashy light show. Toivo Ilvonen admits
that there were plenty of challenges along
the way before it was showtime:
“What we have here is the prototype
version of the world’s biggest passenger
vessel. Therefore the challenges had to do
with making sure that the drawings were
accurate, and that the starting production
worked efficiently. Properly managing the
deliveries from the supplier network was
also important,” Ilvonen says.
THE GREATEST PUZZLE EVER?
In fact, realising the Genesis Project has
been compared to putting together a huge
three-dimensional puzzle. One vessel con-
sists of 181 grand blocks, the biggest one
being 22 m in length, 30 m in width and
weighing 600 tons.
The grand blocks are put together
by welding in the yard halls, and pipe sys-
tems and windows are installed before the
blocks are lifted into the graving dock and
joined together.
Some 500 designers have been in-
volved in making the drawings. The de-
signing process is so time-consuming that
it actually started already a couple of years
before signing the contract. The conceptu-
al design was done by Aker Yards in close
cooperation with Royal Caribbean.
Half of the basic design is techni-
cal solutions, requiring also special know-
how from Aker Yards, and done in-house.
The other half is approval and classifica-
tion drawings, which come either with the
turnkey deliveries or from the design sup-
plier network. The detail engineering - i.e.,
the workshop drawings – produce as many
as 30,000 drawings. These come from the
supplier network.
STICKING TO THE SCHEDULE
As the keel block was positioned in De-
cember, the next phase is to put together
the entire hull, Ilvonen explains.
“We have six grand blocks already in
the graving dock and about 20 ready and
standing by,” he says.
“From here on, the hull assembly will
continue and we must be able to stick to
the schedule,” Ilvonen says, pointing out
that in making this jigsaw puzzle action -
or inaction – has consequences. In order
for the project to be successful, each in-
dividual grand block must be ready to go
when the schedule requires.
It goes without saying that a project
of this magnitude could not be carried
out without solid network management.
Therefore it is quite relevant that Aker
Yards’ competitiveness as a builder of so-
phisticated cruise ships is based on the sur-
rounding marine cluster - in addition to the
company’s special know-how and commit-
ment to high quality, of course.
In this business area, a vast network

of professional suppliers is a must, since,
by themselves, shipyards do not have
enough resources to fulfil all the challeng-
es in desired time. Aker Yards is acting
on the assembly yard principle, meaning
that, in addition to the company’s “own”
personnel, several partner companies are
involved.
600 SUPPLIER COMPANIES…
The project of two Genesis vessels trans-
lates into 12,000 man-years of work for
the yard and partners, i.e. 12 years of
work for 1,000 persons. 600 supplier
companies are involved in the massive
undertaking.
“Of the 600 supplier companies, the
great majority consists of material sup-
pliers,” Ilvonen says. Around 100 com-
panies are contracted for specific work
assignments or total subcontract or turn-
key deliveries. There are also 32 design
companies.
The Genesis Project contains also a
lot of international flavour, and a multi-
tude of languages can be heard at the
yard.
“These two ship projects will fea-
ture, at the peak point, about 1,800 for-
eign workers,” Ilvonen says. According
to the Project Manager, the internation-
al workers bring mostly basic construc-
tion skills to the equation, but there are
also some areas of special expertise which
involve foreign labour. A good chunk of
a Genesis ship is constructed abroad as
well: Ilvonen estimates the “Made in Fin-
land” per cent of the vessels to be around
75%.
…AND 30,000 PEOPLE INVOLVED
Over all, there are 30,000 people involved
in the project, either directly or indirectly.
Ilvonen puts this into perspective by ex-
plaining that there are experts from all
possible fields with some kind of a link-
up to marine industry.
“One has to keep in mind that this
is one of the most complex products out
there. The Genesis Project involves a varie-
ty of things from welding to state-of-the-
art automation, from painting to wireless
date transfer, and so on,” Ilvonen lists.
“The vessel is really a floating small

city, with all the necessary infrastructure
built-in – as it leaves the drydock, it needs
only food and fuel.”
Genesis ships will feature 2,600
module cabins which have been made
and furnished in Piikkiö and Paimio. The
ships will have a total of 86 elevators,
with 24 offering a view. To put it all in
perspective: the shopping centre Jumbo,
for instance, features less elevators. The
elevators will reach higher than, say, the
elevators of the Kone Building (the man-
ufacturer of the elevators).
FULL FIFTEEN
Aker Yards is an expert in building the
world’s largest ships: all 15 of the world’s
largest cruise ships have been built by the
company or are featured in its orderbook.
The Royal Caribbean Cruises and Aker
Yards have been working together for 39
years – with quite spectacular results.
During that time, 25 innovative
newbuildings have been launched and
there are a further three cruise vessels in
the orderbook for 2007–2010 deliveries. NB-1363 Genesis I keel block before lowering.

The latest marvel upon the waves was Lib-
erty of the Seas which sailed in the spring
of 2007. Liberty of the Seas was the sec-
ond in the series of the world’s largest –
for the time being, that is – Freedom-class
cruise vessels.
The third Freedom-class ship, Inde-
pendence of the Seas, is presently receiv-
ing the final touches and is scheduled to
hit the waves this spring. Unlike the other
two Freedom ships, it will not head for the
Caribbean circuit, but instead will make
the rounds in Europe.
Upon its launch, Genesis will thwart
even the Freedom trio. When the first Gen-
esis vessel leaves Turku and heads for the
sunny shores of Miami, it will be the big-
gest export product of Finland ever.
Toivo Ilvonen is quite familiar with
the construction of the marine behemoths,
since he has served as the project manag-
er in all Freedom-class ships. As the con-
struction of Independence of the Seas had
cleared the most critical phase of assem-
bly in November, Ilvonen was assigned to
the Genesis Project. Ilvonen admits that
taking the reigns of a giant project which
had started, in a way, 20 months earlier
was bit of a challenge.
“There hasn’t been too much free
time,” he jokes.
MADE FROM SCRATCH
Ilvonen says that Genesis is different from
Freedom-class ships in the sense that Gen-
esis is a brand new prototype.
“Therefore the complexity of the
basic design is on another level entirely.
With Freedom-class ships, basic design
was 65% based on the existing Voyager-
class,” Ilvonen says.
According to Ilvonen, the competi-
tiveness of the Finnish shipyards is a sum
of many factors. There is unique know-
how and excellent quality – and a diverse
marine cluster which supports the realisa-
tion of world-record projects.
“The development which has led to
the present situation started already in the
1980’s, so one could say that it took many
– albeit small – steps to get where we are
today,” he says.
STAY TUNED
New cruise ships always feature something
”extra”, something spectacular and nev-
er-seen-before. However, Royal Caribbean
has yet to reveal what mind-blowing fea-
tures the Genesis duo will hold.
Aker Yards is charged with guard-
ing those secrets until RCCL feel that the
time is right to lift the veil of mystery. Harri
Kulovaara, RCCL Executive Vice President,
Maritime, has characterised the ships as
”amazing and revolutionary.” ■

T he service warehouse concept is some-
thing that has not been used before at
the Turku shipyard. The concept is being
utilised in the construction of Genesis I and
II, the world’s largest cruise ships.
Tapio Hjort, Onninen Sales Group
Manager, Turku shipyard, explains that
under the old system the materials were
mainly accessed from Aker Yards’ own
central storage and the contractors would
simply bring in the professionals needed
in the construction effort.
”In the new system, the contractor
companies obtain all the ship’s building
materials themselves and Aker Yards peo-
ple get theirs from Onninen,” Hjort says.
The new operative model has brought On-
ninen new customers and opened up a to-
tally new business area.
The service warehouse features the
same materials that the shipyard central
storage did previously. In addition, the
BOOSTING LOGISTICS VIA COOPERATION:
Turku shipyard’s service warehouse
entire Onninen portfolio is available. The
product information has been coded in-
to the shared system of the stakeholders,
so managing the supplies is uniform in
all work phases and documents. When it
comes to materials acquisition, Aker Yards
and the contractors receive estimates on
what is needed, in what quantity and in
which phase of the project.
POSITIVE
DOMINO EFFECT
”The supply chain from the materials pro-
ducer or manufacturer to Onninen and the
end-user must be flawless. There are sev-
eral thousand people building a cruise
ship, so everyone’s work affects everybody
else’s, as well as the schedule,” Hjort ex-
plains.
“Therefore, the construction must be
well planned and organised and the ma-
terials must be available precisely at the
right moment.”
The special supplies of marine in-
dustry and the product suppliers’ port-
folio constitute an enormous product of-
fering. Cataloguing it all and feeding the
data into the system – as well as establish-
ing working supplier relationships – has
meant a giant effort for Onninen.
Tapio Hjort emphasises the role of
fluid cooperation between Onninen, the
suppliers, Aker Yards and the contractors.
He says that the stakeholders have faith in
each other and the expectations are run-
ning high:
“The goal of the partnership is to
boost logistics at the shipyard to make
sure that building the world’s largest cruise
ships in Turku, Finland, remains a profita-
ble business.”
SAMI J. ANTEROINEN
Aker Yards and Onninen reached an agreement in the
spring of 2007 to establish a service warehouse and offi-
ce at the shipyard at Turku. Presently, both the warehou-
se and office are utilised by Aker Yards and its subcont-
ractors.
T urun Teräskaluste Oy became familiar with stainless steel as
early as the 1960s. Operating in the immediate vicinity of Aker
Yards’ Turku shipyard, Turun Teräskaluste Oy (also known as TU-
TEKA) has been a part of Finland’s shipbuilding cluster since the
1970s. The company’s handiwork can be found on more than a
hundred vessels on the world’s seven seas. It also sells its prod-
ucts internationally and for ship repair and refurbishment projects.
The company’s products range from small decorative mouldings
to large-scale works of art, often combining stainless steel, glass
and other elements that are well-known to TUTEKA. Other eve-
ryday products are stairs, banisters and various fixed or movable
pieces of furniture. The main material is usually stainless steel, of-
ten with a mirror polish.
“TUTEKA is used to challenges and lives on them. Our com-
petitive advantages often lie in tailoring or in particularly demand-
ing delivery processes based on a designer’s, architect’s or artist’s
visions of the final product,” explains project manager Aleksi Ki-
viniemi, M.Sc. (Tech.). The Genesis class poses new challenges
for TUTEKA, and the company is currently in negotiation with
various turnkey suppliers on diverse small and large prefabricat-
Experts in Stainless Steel
ed structures for area furnishing, which could be manufactured
and brought nearly to completion on TUTEKA’s premises by the
shipyard.

"V iking XPRS is a good example of new vessels which are
able to operate in all weather circumstances. It has ice
class 1AS and there are not any problems in traffic also in stormy
conditions", Mr. Matti Niskala says. He is Marine Country Busi-
ness Manager for Finland of Lloyd´s Register EMEA, which has
classified the vessel.
According to Mr. Niskala Viking XPRS is also a good exam-
ple of ship project in which the manufacturing of block has been
decentralized to several yards.
"The blocks have been built in Finland, Poland and Rus-
sia and those have been collected together in Aker Yards Helsin-
ki shipyard. This is a challenge to all partners in the project be-
cause tolerances have to be same in all production places. Our
role is to control tolerances and also to motivate subcontractors
to right solutions."
The delivery of Viking XPRS was in winter time 2008 and
it will be seen in the traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn under
Swedish flag.

Vacon receives type approvals for marine use from DNV and BV
T he Finland-based AC drives manufacturer Vacon has received
a type approval for marine use from the Norwegian certifi-
cation body Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Earlier, Vacon received a
type approval from the French certification body Bureau Veritas
(BV). These approvals apply to Vacon’s NXL, NXS and NXP rang-
es of AC drives.
“These type approval certificates make a statement that our
AC drives conform to the high requirements of the marine & off-
shore segment. In practice, Vacon NXL, NXS and NXP drives can
be delivered without surveyor presence according to given terms.
This will definitely boost our sales in the marine & offshore busi-
ness,” says Mr Jussi-Pekka Sampola, Product Marketing Director,
Marine & Offshore, Vacon.
Vacon has delivered AC drives to control e.g. main propul-
sion, thrusters, steering gear as well as drawworks, topdrives, ro-
tary tables and various types of winches. Deliveries also include a
considerable number of AC drives to control pumps used in dredg-
ing, cooling, cargo handling and oil drilling. When AC drives are
delivered further to an OEM or system integrator customer, the
enclosure solution must be tested according to the BV and DNV
requirements, and the certificates are supplied according to the
project-specific information.
In the highly fragmented AC drive market, Vacon is the larg-
est company that focuses entirely on AC drives. The company has
a complete product portfolio in the power range from 0.25 kW
to 5 MW and at voltages up to 690 V, including air- and liquid-
cooled units and common DC bus components. ■

V TT Technical Research Centre of Fin-
land is an impartial expert organiza-
tion that carries out technical and techn-
oeconomic research. The turnover is M€ 220 and the personnel totals 2,780. Main
goal of our maritime technology research
is to ensure high performance ships, relia-
ble operation, and safe sea traffic.
MARITIME OPERATIONS AND THE
ENVIRONMENT
“Prevention is foremost” describes well
our strategy to improve maritime safety
and protection of the environment. One
of our main research focuses is risk assess-
ment (FSA) applied to maritime operations,
telematics, VTS, port & fairway design, en-
vironmental engineering, inland and win-
ter navigation.
We also actively develop Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) tools for evaluation of
ship concepts in early design phase from
environmental point of view.
SAFETY CULTURE AND HUMAN
RELIABILITY
Safety cannot be compromised in the cruis-
ing business. Although the cruiser person-
nel have a variety of duties, such as enter-
taining the clients, operating the ship, and
taking care of the machinery, they all con-
tribute to the safety of the journey. VTT
offers services for assessing and improv-
ing human performance in reliability seek-
ing organizations. We conduct safety cul-
ture reviews, risk-awareness assessments,
SAFETY AND RELIABILITY RESEARCH AT VTT
staff competence evaluations, and usabili-
ty evaluations. Assessments are conducted
by interdisciplinary teams with behavioral
science and maritime expertise.
SIMULATION
A prerequisite for realistic ship simulation
in critical environmental conditions are
carefully designed mathematical models
and high quality input data. Because VTT
develops its own simulators and ship mod-
els, new and unique ship designs and pro-
pulsion systems can be modeled. Its own
laboratories make it possible to carry out
extensive model scale testing to acquire in-
formation about the ship’s hydrodynamics
and about the aerodynamic characteristics
of both the ship and the specific area.
NEW MONITORING TECHNOLOGIES
FOR SHIP OWNERS AND SYSTEM
SUPPLIERS
With on-line monitoring information, ship
owners and operators can verify that the
acceptable limits for hull structural stress-
es or vibrations are not exceeded. For its
part, the monitoring of machinery and pro-
pulsion unit loadings gives information for
preventive maintenance. Advanced mon-
itoring of loads onboard ships will signifi-
cantly reduce accident system failures, and
thus save money and improve the overall
shipping safety and passenger comfort.

Twenty years ago, ABB started the
development work that aimed at
wide-scale commercial utilizati-
on of the Azipod® propulsion sys-
tems. In the autumn of 2007, a sig-
nificant step was taken in the his-
tory of the product, when a new
factory centralising the Azipod
knowledge was taken into use in
Vuosaari in Helsinki.
“T he investment in the develop-
ment of the business in Finland
was based on the innovative engineering
skills in the marine field”, says Lasse Mäke-
lin, director of the business unit. “Main-
taining global competitiveness requires the
continuous development of our activities,
and this new factory gives us even better
possibilities to do that.”
The value of the ABB factory invest-
ment is over 30 million euros. The new
premises have 10 000 square metres of
production and office spaces. Approx-
imately 200 people work there in the
electrical propulsion systems R&D, sales,
project planning, maintenance and pro-
duction. During the year 2007, the unit
has recruited dozens of professionals from
different fields. 20 more are being sought
at the moment for specialist and manage-
rial positions. The factory employs a to-
tal of 700 people, including the network
suppliers.
The new factory enables the optimiz-
ing of production premises for the pro-
pulsion devices, which improves effective-
ness and doubles the capacity for assembly
and testing. Centralising all the specialist
knowledge on the Azipod devices under
ABB’s Azipod® knowledge is centralised in the Vuosaari factory in Helsinki
one roof also improves the interaction and
service performance. The location of the
factory near the Vuosaari harbour is opti-
mal for logistics: the heavy propulsion de-
vices can be easily shipped off around the
world. One device weighs 200 tonnes and
stands 10 metres high, which sets its own
restrictions on the logistics.
The Azipod propulsion systems im-
prove the manoeuvrability and effective-
ness of ships. They can help the shipping
companies save up to 20 % in fuel costs.
The new factory helps in enhancing the
production volume and on the long run
gives the ABB product more competitive
edge compared to traditional systems.
Container ships, which carry most of
the world’s parcelled goods, and LNG tank-
ers, used for shipping condensed natural
gases, are among the most promising new
application areas of the electrical propul-
sion systems. Ice-related know-how is cru-
cial in developing the Azipod system. The
Azipod system is included in several ship
orders that were originated by the utilisa-
tion of the Russian arctic oil reserves, which
started on the Sahalin island.
There are currently 140 Azipod sys-
tems in use, and 40 more have been or-
dered. The factory investment is ABB’s
response to the growing demand for elec-
trical propulsion systems. The worldwide
growth is strongest in Asia, but Russia has
remarkable growth potential as well. ABB
delivers approximately half of the world’s
electrical propulsion systems. The custom-
ers include shipping companies and ship-
yards operating on or manufacturing lux-
ury cruisers, ships for icy waters, and other
special ships. Safety and reliability of op-
eration are the basic requirements of the
field. The advanced technology also en-
hances the ships’ efficiency and environ-
ment-friendliness.

I NTRODUCTION. To protect lives on
board a ship is the obligation of the
ship designer, the architects and the con-
tractors but not least of the ship owner. A
ship is a closed society when the ship is at
the open sea. There is no way to a quick es-
cape in case of an accident, so there must
be enough time to bring the passengers to
a safe place. The rescue teams on board
must be able to thrust that all installations
on board are according to existing regu-
lations. All materials have to pass smoke
and toxic gas tests or have to be complete-
ly non-combustible. The safety on board is
guided by the international SOLAS (Safety
of Life at Sea) agreement.
SURSHIP. An ongoing (2006–2009)
European Research cooperation project on
Maritime Safety, Surship(Survivability for
ships) is aiming to improve safety on board.
All passengers should be able to stay on
board while the crew is taking control of
the dangerous situation. A sub-project,
Surship – Fire, Survivability for ships in
case of fire is coordinated by VTT and fi-
nanced by the government, VTT and 10
Finnish companies.
The task is to collect and combine
available information on key factors of fire
behaviour of materials and products used
on board in a form useful for fire safety
engineering analysis.
MATERIALS. The understanding of
what happens with different materials
during a fire is essential when planning
and designing a ship and its interior in-
stallations. Steel softens, aluminium melts,
all organic matter will burn or decompose
during a fire. Reduced oxygen in the air
can drastically change burning gas com-
position into more toxic components fol-
lowed by intoxication and loss of life. In-
CRUISE SHIPS GROW BIGGER AND SAFER?
organic materials like metal, stone, glass,
ceramic and cementitious materials will
absorb heat during a fire. Cementitious
materials are gypsum, cement or silicate
based with up to 50% chemically bound
water. The fire will release water vapour,
which cools and dilutes burning gases,
while keeping the surface at around 100
centigrade. This will increase the time to
escape and give the fire fighters the few
extra minutes they need to take control
over the fire. The vaporized water will al-
so neutralise toxic burning gases.
CONCLUSIONS. When designing the
ship interior it is important to be aware of
material properties and behaviour of ma-
terials during fire. Never place “plastic”
based materials, moulding or decorations
up in the ceiling and never specify paints
and coatings with unknown burning char-
acteristics for upper parts of walls and the
ceiling. Also artwork should at least have
low flame spread and a minimum content
of organic material. A specifying architect
should take his responsibility not to specify
or suggest materials, which have not been
tested according to the newest IMO meth-
ods. This is one of the means by which the
passenger safety can be increased.

cruise vessel
H I-FOG, the high pressure water mist system supplied by

world’s largest cruise vessel, the Genesis project. The vessel
is being built by Aker Yards, Turku, Finland for Royal Carib-

5,400 passengers.
More than 13,000 sprinklers will cover all hotel spac-

will offer a significantly higher level of fire protection than
required by international regulations.
This order confirms Marioff’s position as the major sup-

The Viking XPRS is a concrete expression
of faith in the future of passenger traffic
with high quality and good food.
The Viking XPRS is the first of the
new era ships built by the Finnish shipyard
expressly for the Helsinki-Tallinn route. The
ship has received great interest already in
the building stages. This could be seen
for example in the number of sugges-
tions received for the name competition.
The competition for the ship’s name drew
in over 16 000 name suggestions. The Vi-
king Line management chose a name that
even the customers already used as the
working name.
The Viking Line management chose
to keep the working name already familiar
to the customers, Viking XPRS, because it
symbolises the adjectives that best describe
the ship: fast, modern, and dependable.
DEPENDABLE TRANSPORT
IN ALL WEATHERS
Viking Line has aimed at combining the
best features of the traditional passenger
car ferries and catamarans, such as com-
fort, service on board, and security, togeth-
er with a short travelling time around the
year in all weather conditions. Environ-
mental issues and travelling comfort were
emphasised in the design of the ship.
Nils-Erik Eklund, Managing Director
of Viking Line, said in his speech in the
naming ceremony: “The future of the Bal-
tic Sea is important for coastal states such
as Finland and Estonia. We are extremely
dependent on reliable seafaring. The Baltic
is the passage that connects us to the rest
of Europe. Efficient, competitive and envi-
ronment-friendly sea transport is crucial.
We should take care of the unique nature
of the Baltic. Environmental issues have
therefore played a central part in the de-
sign of the Viking XPRS. We are truly hap-
py to be able to use the best and most en-
vironment-friendly technologies.”

“T his is a time period of developing a new efficiency in the
yards and the sea traffic”, Mr. Curt-Olof Eklund, Man-
aging Director of Bureau Veritas Finland (BV) says.
“There is a need to eliminate climate effects like storms and
ice in the traffic and the classification companies like BV has an
important role in this new situation.”
“One example is from the logistics sector. It is a new type
of multipurpose deck cargo vessel of the Finnish chartering and
operations company Meriaura Oy Ltd. The vessel “Aura”, is de-
signed especially for transporting heavy project cargos on deck
in the Baltic Sea area, and it has been built according to the Finn-
ish-Swedish ice class I A by classification of BV. No weather cir-
cumstances, even in the wintertime, can disturb the block trans-
portation between yards. This is important concerning the tight
time tables of the shipbuilding projects.”
“BV has also a long history of the classification of Tallink
ships. The starting point from “Romantica”, delivered in 2002,
has joint to a lengthened version from the base chain like “Gal-
axy” and now a third of those, which will be built in the Rauma
shipyard for delivery in 2009”, Mr Eklund says.

Finnish Environment Institute and the
shipyard Uudenkaupungin Työvene
Ltd signed the shipbuilding contract of a
new multipurpose vessel on October 26th,
2007. The project design of the vessel has
been made by ILS Ltd, which will also con-
tinue as the main designer in the project.
Responsible for the design and installations
of the vessel’s electricity is Telesilta Ltd.
The new vessel will be constructed
for oil and chemical spill abatement du-
ties in all climate conditions of the Gulf of
Finland. A special emphasis in the design
has been laid on action in harsh ice con-
ditions. The vessel will be operated by the
navy, and one of the main requirements
is its compatibility for the special duties
of the navy.
ILS Ltd’s traditions in icebreaker design continuing in a new multipurpose vessel
The main dimensions of the vessel are:
Maximum length 71,4 m
Breadth 14,5 m
Depth 7,0 m
Draft 5,0 m
The total size of the vessel’s oil collection
tanks is about 1000 m³ and the chemi-
cal collection tanks, which are made of
stainless steel, are about 180 m³. The sta-
ble oil spill recovery equipment will be de-
livered by Lamor Corporation Ab, and the
equipment for oil recovery in ice condi-
tions, which are placed in containers, are
results of Finnish Environment Institute’s
product development.
Like icebreakers, the new vessel will
be diesel-electric, and it will be equipped
with two Ulstein Aquamaster azimuth
thrusters by Rolls-Royce each of 2700 kW
effect. The main electric motors are invert-
er-driven and designed for demanding ice-
breaker use. The bollard pull of the vessel
will be approximately 64 tons. The main
diesel generators of the vessel will be de-
livered by Wärtsilä. The vessel’s main en-
gines are four type 9L20 DE Marine die-
sel engines, each of them possessing the
power of 1800 KW.
Totally there are 14 vessels intended
for oil spill recovery. The new vessel will be
the first that’s equipped also with chem-
ical spill recovery equipment. The vessel
will be delivered in 2010. ■

W ikrolux Oy has manufactured ex-
it signs and emergency lights for
nearly 20 years.
Wikrolux has used LED technology as
a light source since 1991, making them the
first manufacturer in Finland to use LEDs
in emergency lighting.
Cooperation with a variety of dif-
ferent customers has helped Wikrolux Oy
and Autrosafe Oy design and manufacture
broad variety of emergency lights even for
the most demanding conditions.
WIKROLUX CERAMICNearly 2 years ago Wikrolux Oy and
Autrosafe Oy started development on a
project that today is know as Wikroled Ce-
ramic. We are proud to say that the prod-
uct is finally finished and awaiting final
tests at SGS FIMKO.
Mass production will start in the be-
ginning of 2008.
The goal was to produce a light that
can withstand very harsh conditions with-
out compromising functionality. One ob-
stacle was heat. LEDs produce heat and
this is also one of biggest reason for pre-
mature failure of LEDs. The basic idea was
to use a ceramic circuit board on which all
the electronics and LEDs are installed. Ce-
ramic as a material has a good ability to
transfer heat and combined with a cast
aluminum housing, heat is no longer an
issue. The heat from the LEDs and oth-
er components is effectively transferred to
the aluminum housing.
Furthermore all components used are
of very high quality, this will ensure a long
lifetime for the product.
Wikroled Ceramic will be available for
the following systems: 230 V AC/DC 50/60
Hz and 12/24 V AC/DC. Wikroled Ceramic
will also be available as a battery backup
model (Ceramic AT) and as an adressable
version for the Plansafe system.
Most models are available in different
IP classes reaching from IP 20 to IP 67.
Three different LED color choices are
also available. Cool white, neutral white
and warm white. ■

Greener, Safer and Easier system to pre-vent pipe blockage, MEGATECH ADS 400
V acuum toilet pipe lines onboard ships tend to have blockag-
es due to the gradual build-up of a thick, hard layer of scale
on the inside of ship’s wastewater pipes.
Cruise vessel passengers definitely appreciate if the ship’s
toilet lines always work perfectly. Nobody wants to meet prob-
lems on this area.
Traditional methods for scale removing from pipes have been
strong acid treatments. These are risks to environment and risks to
personnel, sometimes ineffective and also expensive systems.
Finnish company Megatech has developed an intelligent
chemical dispensing system ADS 400. This device distributes en-
vironmental friendly chemical/bacteria-liquid to the problem ar-
eas of the pipework. The liquid is specially designed to remove
and prevent the build-up of the scale inside the tubes. Megatech
ADS 400 -system automatically monitors the condition of pipes
and doses always optimal amount of liquid.
Equipment is easy to install to both old and new vessels.
Megatech supplies for ships also other intelligent chemical
dispensers. These are used in cleaning and foam preventing of
seawater pipes, cooling pipes and boilers. ■

State-of-art automation for world class Cruise ships from PEMAMEK
Aker Yards Turku shipyard is currently working to
improve throughput capacity and productivity. The
reason for this is clear: the last Freedom Class vessel
will be finished in the spring of 2008, after which Ak-
er Yards will concentrate on a new cruise ship class:
Genesis. Genesis Class vessels will be approximate-
ly 50% larger than Freedom Class vessels.
A remarkable part of Finland’s maritime cluster is
Pemamek, a provider of revolutionary shipbuilding
production automation solutions which improve produc-
tivity and quality.
Aker Yards’ one of latest investment, PEMA
SWP22000-8 welding station was designed for the dou-
ble fillet welding of stiffeners on the panels. The station
has eight independently-programmable welding carriag-
es functioning in pairs, each of which contains an ESAB
AristoMig 500 Tandem MAG welding head, with ancil-
lary equipment. The system is off-line programmable and
its graphic user interface is the Pema WeldControl soft-
ware, which can be used to program each carriage’s weld-
ing areas after reading the panel geometry data and the
welding parameters are selected from the database. Nu-
merical control is used to control the motion. Individually
programmable welding carriage pairs allow for the ver-
satile welding of profiles, such as chain and staggered in-
termittent welding, unwelded areas, profile openings and
selection of welding parameters during welding as well
as high productivity, as the welding speed on small fillet
welds is nearly 2 m/min. Furthermore Aker is using sev-
eral others PEMA production lines and stations like robo-
tised welding and cutting systems. ■
The SWP22000-8 stiffener welding station significantly
improves Aker Yards’ throughput capacity.
