Youngsters have turned into 'screenagers' who spend nearly ten hours a day glued to TVs, computers, phones and video games.

Much of the time they are texting, playing games consoles, surfing the internet, scrolling through their iPods or staring at screens during school lessons.

Adolescents have been called "digital natives," but data suggests that they are both comfortable with new technologies, and yet not always as technically savvy as we collectively believe them to be.

Reading is a

window to

the world.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/64939463@N00/2968027741/

Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. The degree to which students can read and understand text in all formats (e.g., picture, video, printe.g., picture, video, print) and all contexts is a key indicator to success in school and in life. As a lifelong learning skill, reading goes beyond decoding and comprehension to interpretation and development of new understandings.

“Media literacy is the ability to sift through and

analyze the messages that inform, entertain and sell to

us every day. It's the ability to bring

critical thinking skills to bear on all media—

from music videos and Web environments to

product placement in films and virtual displays on NHL

hockey boards.”

We must educate the students we have, not the student we used to have, nor the student we wished we had. We must adapt to today's student, not them adapting to us. We must adapt to their world of today's 21st century technology. We cannot teach like we've taught forever anymore. We must change ourselves to adapt to their world.

They are hyper-communicators and must "power down" just to go to school.
