Scopus Advanced Features

Alissa V. Fial, MA, MLIS Reference/Education Librarian

Topics to Be Covered

• Scopus—Background Information • Set Up an Account in Scopus • Journal Analytics • Author Searching • Citation Tracking

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I am touching on Journal analytics and citation tracking, but I want to focus the majority of our time today on author searching.

Scopus

• Covers scientific literature citations and web resources

• Content updated daily • 46 million records • Over 18,000 titles • Includes conference papers and proceedings,

scientific web pages, and patents

Presenter
Presentation Notes
It includes other services, but for the basis of today’s presentation, will focus on this part

Access

Account Set Up

• Register – Name – Email/Password – Areas of Research/Role – Optional: emails from Elsevier – Not Optional: agreement

• Check for registration email • Log-in

Journal Analytics

• Information about the journal – Publisher – Dates of Coverage – SJR – SNIP – Citations – Docs – Percent Not Cited – Percent Reviews

SJR – SCImago Journal Rank

• Status of the journal • Follows methodology similar to Google’s

algorithm • Weighted for each citation • Note: Not an Impact Factor

– Consider using when the journal does not have an Impact Factor

SNIP – Source-Normalized Impact per Paper

• Ratio of a source’s average citation count per paper to the citation potential in the specific subject field

• “Corrects” across research fields • Citations counts in Social Sciences are lower than Life

Sciences

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The SJR & SNIP weigh the citation and the quality of the journal. The citation weight is regardless of the subject area, hence the “correction.”

Other Features

• Citations – Total number of citations received by journal in each

year • Docs

– Total number of documents published in the journal in each year

• Percent Not Cited – Percentage of articles not cited in each year

• Percent Reviews – Percentage of articles that are review

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Something to consider for publication: the percent not cited and percent reviews. If something is not being cited, then maybe that journal is not being looked at as much as other journals in a similar field. The percent reviews, looks at the number of articles that are review. Review articles get more traffic, again a consideration if looking at publication.

Journal Impact Factor

• Journal Citation Reports (JCR) – Impact factor of journal – Subject search – Journal title search

Sample Search

• Research: “Aqueous humor dynamics” • Look for a journal with “eye” in the title

• Where should I publish? – Journal analytics – Compare three journals

Sample Search

• Select “Sources” from dashboard • Type in “eye” in the search box • Review results

Sources selected from Dashboard

Search for eye

Results

Sample Search

• Journal Information – Subject area – Publisher – ISSN/e-ISSN – Scopus dates of coverage – Documents available (viewable by year)

Subject area

Publisher

by year

Sample Search

• Journal analytics – Compare three journals:

1. Experimental Eye Research 2. Current Eye Research 3. Eye

– Create a line chart – Email the information

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Note: as we talked about you can view the SJR, SNIP, Citations, Docs, Percent Not Cited and Percent Reviews

Author Searching

• Information about the author – Affiliation – Number of documents – Subject area – Author Evaluator

• Performance of Author • h-index

– Measures an individual’s work – Based upon author’s citations and number of times an author

has been cited

Sample Search

• Author: Carol Toris

Select Author Search Tab

Author’s Last name and Initials or First Name

Select Search

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You may select “exact matches only” You may also select an affiliation; if you know s/he is UNMC or Omaha, etc.

Multiple Authors Listed

• Why does this happen? – Scopus uses an algorithm to decide which

documents get attached to each author • Includes names, affiliations, email addresses

– When Scopus does not feel 100% certain of a match, they will create another profile

Combine Authors

• Use when other names listed are possible • Select the names • Click on “search documents”

– The search OR’s the results

Presenter
Presentation Notes
First of two possible ways of doing this

Show the Documents

Select the names

Search Query

Combine Authors

• Find potential author matches – Review the author names provided – Select View Grouped with Author – Results will show two columns:

1. Original author selected 2. Results of grouping

– May save group

Save the group

Merge Author

• Use when other names are possible • Use for the authors you know or if you are the

author • Steps:

1. Review authors 2. Select preferred name 3. Review profile 4. Submit merge request to Scopus

Select the names

Request to merge authors

Press Start

Step 1: Review Authors

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Once you’ve selected authors to merge you can begin.

Press Next Choose preferred

name from list

Step 2: Select Preferred Name

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Review the names and select “next.”

Edit documents

Press Next

Step 3: Review Profile

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Review the profiles, are these the correct articles? You may edit the documents before moving on.

Press Submit

Prepare email/ Include any comments

Step 4: Submit Merge Changes to Scopus

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Fill out the form and submit the request to Scopus. Again only do this if you are the author or closely affiliated with the author and know his/her work. Scopus manually reviews and makes changes, may take a few weeks for changes to be reflected in Scopus.

Request Author Detail Changes

• Use when other names are possible • Use for the authors you know or if you are the

author • Steps:

1. Select author(s) to include 2. Select preferred name 3. Review documents

– Search for missing documents 4. Review profile 5. Submit changes to Scopus

Step 1: Select Author(s) to Include

Press Start

Step 2: Select Preferred Name

Charts/graphs of author’s work

Author Evaluator

Documents Pie Chart

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Example of document type If you double-click on any part of the pie chart, you can be sent straight to the documents list in Scopus

h-index Graph

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Note: one possible metric Performance evaluation tool When you hover over the graph, you find out how many documents have been cited a certain number of times in this graph, the 18th document was cited 21 times If you click on any part of the graph, it takes you to the list of articles that cite Toris’s particular work. If you remove self-citations, the h-index number goes down

Citations Graph

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Citations graph shows the number of times one of Toris’ documents have been cited Please note we are early in 2012 and thus the sharp decline, b/c nothing has been cited by this particular author.

Citation Tracking

• Track the number of times an article has been cited (can go as far back as 1996)

• Authors may use to track own work • May exclude author’s self-citations

Exclude Self Citations

Date Range

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The subtotal covers the years we have The total includes all the citations You can view the citations (by clicking on the hyperlinks) for each time an article has been cited by year Again you can remove self-citations

Affiliation Searching

• Type full name of institution • Can group affiliations

Affiliation Page • Name

– Including other possible listings • Research

– Documents – Authors – Patents

• Collaborating affiliations – Listing
