New Zealand’s education system covers the following levels:

• early childhood education - from birth to school entry age

• primary and intermediate schools – from 5 to 11 years of age

• secondary schools - from 12 to 19 years of age

• further education - higher and vocational education.

The New Zealand education system reflects our unique and diverse society. We welcome different abilities, religious

beliefs, ethnic groups and ideas about teaching and learning. We have processes in place to give all students

consistent, high-quality education at all levels.

Schooling is compulsory for New Zealand students from ages 6 to 16 however students can start school on the day

they turn 5 years old if they choose to. Most children in New Zealand stay at school until 17 or 18 years of age.

S t a t e , S t a t e - i n t e g r a t e d a n d P r i v a t e s c h o o l s Most schools in New Zealand are owned and funded by the state and teach the national curriculum. State schools

are secular meaning they have no religious affiliations.

State-integrated schools are schools that were private and have become part of the state education system. They

are funded by the government and teach the national curriculum. State integrated schools have special character

and promote their own religion and beliefs in addition to the state education system.

Private schools are mostly funded through school fees. They develop their own learning programmes and do not

have to follow the national curriculum.

N a t i o n a l C u r r i c u l u m The national curriculum covers subjects that are taught at primary, intermediate and secondary schools and sets

out the standards students should reach in each subject.

Primary education focuses on foundation learning across a range of subjects and competencies but especially in

literacy and numeracy. At secondary school, students learn a broad and balanced curriculum with increased

specialisation in higher year levels. English is the language of instruction with various courses and support available

for English second language learners.

To learn more about the New Zealand Curriculum:

www.nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz/The-New-Zealand-Curriculum

N a t i o n a l C e r t i f i c a t e o f E d u c a t i o n a l A c h i e v e m e n t ( N C E A ) The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the national senior secondary school qualification.

NCEA is assessed during the last three years at school (Years 11 to 13). Students can achieve NCEA at all 3 levels in a

wide range of courses and subjects.

NCEA challenges students of all abilities in all learning areas, and shows credits and grades for separate skills and

knowledge. It enables students to gain credits from both traditional school curriculum areas and alternative

programmes.

NCEA and other national certificates are recognised by employers and used as the benchmark for selection by

universities and polytechnics. NCEA is also readily accepted overseas, including by universities. When applying for

employment, prospective employees can create a summary of their results from their Record of Achievement.

NORTH ISLAND SCHOOLS

N O R T H L A N D

The region of Northland and the Bay of Islands stretches north from Auckland, towards the warm waters of Polynesia.

The relaxed, sunny lifestyle of Northland springs from its subtropical climate and the many beautiful islands, bays and beaches around the coastline.

The people of the North have a passion for water sports including surfing, boating, game fishing, sailing and diving. They also have a deep appreciation of the region's fascinating Maori and European history.

Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the South-East, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges to the west and north-west.

Auckland is one of the few cities in the world to have harbours on two separate bodies of water. The central part of the urban area of Auckland covers a narrow area between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea, and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean.

Auckland is a busy metropolitan city with a diverse and multicultural society making up almost one third of New Zealand's entire population. Auckland offers a huge range of shopping possibilities, sports and arts options as well as a cafés and restaurants.

The Hawke's Bay region encompasses the area around Hawke's Bay on the east coast of the North Island. It is 332 kilometres (about four hours) north-east of Wellington City.

Blessed with a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate, Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's warmest, driest regions.

The landscapes of Hawke's Bay begin with the high, forested Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges. From the mountains, the land steps down towards the coast, flattening out to become the Heretaunga Plains. A number of wide rivers run swiftly to meet the blue Pacific Ocean. The twin cities of Napier and Hastings are the main population centres. Schooling options in the Hawkes Bay include high quality primary and secondary schools.

by sheltering mountain ranges giving it a Mediterranean-type climate.

The Nelson region is known for its year-round sunshine, golden beaches, national parks, boutique wineries, micro-breweries and a large creative community of working artists. The city of Nelson was named after Admiral Lord Nelson of Battle of Trafalgar fame. Every year the city hosts the Montana New Zealand Wearable Art Awards, where art comes off the wall and onto the body in many weird and wonderful ways.

The Nelson region is popular with international students with its high quality schools and excellent recreation options.

The West Coast is a narrow strip of land between the South Island's Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea. It is the longest region in New Zealand.

With a population of only 31,000 people, the West Coast retains the feeling of a pioneer frontier. It's a wild place known for rivers and rainforests; glaciers and geological treasures. Legends and stories from the past cling to every feature of the landscape.

Westland offers a unique personal schooling option for international students who appreciate the outdoors and wish to explore everything the coast has to offer.

The Canterbury region includes a large central portion of the East Coast of the South Island, centred around the city of Christchurch.

The highest point of the region is the highest point of New Zealand. The spectacular Aoraki/Mount Cook stands at 3,754 metres (Aoraki is Maori for Cloud Piercer). At the other end of the scale, the submarine trenches off the coast of Kaikoura are thousands of metres deep, providing an ideal environment for the whales, dolphins and seals that live there permanently.

Christchurch is a thriving city with excellent primary and secondary schooling options for international students.

Located in the centre of the South Island, Central Otago comprises a series of river basins and deep river gorges.

Central Otago is the only region in New Zealand to experience a near continental climate, having the hottest summers and coldest winters in New Zealand. Old trails that provided access for thousands of miners in the gold rush of the 1860s can still be seen winding over the hills, along with stone cottages, cleverly engineered water channels, mines and machinery associated with the gold rush.

Education options for school age international students in and around Dunedin are excellent.

Southland is New Zealand's southernmost region and includes New Zealand's third island, Stewart Island.

The lush, green pastoral lands of Southland are a strong contrast to the dryness of Central Otago further north. Throughout the Southland region are a number of accessible, tranquil waterways that attract fly-fishing enthusiasts in search of brown trout.

Southland's largest urban centre is Invercargill, a city of 49,000 people. Visitors come to admire the elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings, gardens and landscaped parks. As in Dunedin to the north, Invercargill was originally settled by people from Scotland.

Invercargill is built around beautiful Queens Park—80 hectares of gardens, wildlife and sporting fun. As well as an 18-hole golf course, the park has animal enclosures, a bird aviary, play areas and the Southland Museum.
