WHY ARE WE TEACHING ABOUT ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS

Research Shows…

Students who use drugs or alcohol perform

academically at a lower rate than those who do

not (Jeynes, 2002).

Logistic regression identified gender, race,

frequent smoking, and marijuana use as

statistically significant factors associated with

increased odds for low academic performance.

(Cox, Zhang, Johnson & March, 2007)

WHAT DO STUDENTS BELIEVE?I feel comfortable seeking help from an adult at WHHS about Alcohol and/or Other Drug (AOD) related issues

WHAT DO STUDENTS BELIEVE?

I believe experimenting with AOD on the weekends can lead to abuse

WHAT DO STUDENTS KNOW?Know the definition of Rebound Effect (Withdrawal)

Know that teenagers become chemically dependent at a faster rate than adults

Know that an adult who has been using AOD since they were a teen results in having an emotional skill set of a teenager

Know the definition of AOD Tolerance

WHAT SKILLS DID STUDENTS LEARN?

Based on a scenario, were able to identify someone in the “abuse” stage

STUDENT REFLECTIONS“This lesson was very informative. It explained

a lot of things usual anti-drug lessons don’t explain. Now I can use this information in the future if any of my friends are in trouble with abuse.”

“I felt this was a great little activity and I actually feel like I’m leaving with new info I can apply to life and the future.”

“I have an alcoholic living in my home. I will go to the website to understand how to deal with it and also learn new information.”

LIMITATIONS

Some questions on test were difficult

We could have piloted our test

Not having built rapport with students before

presenting a sensitive topic

Having substitutes teachers for 7 out of 10

presentations

WHAT WENT WELL

Students received valuable information about

AOD use

Gained knowledge, attitude, and skills to

make positive decisions about using

OUR GOAL

With these Attitudes, Knowledge, and Skills

• Students will get the support they need for

AOD related issues

• The amount of student suspensions for AOD

on campus decrease

• Drop out rates will be reduced

Thank you for your support of the school counseling program!
