RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE ANNOUNCES LARGEST “BATTLE OF THE SEASONS” TALENT TOUR YET FOR 2015
BATTLE OF THE SEASONS
The Sparkle Queen, Mary Brewster, chats with the Sparkle King… songwriter, Grammy Award-winner, and discoverer-of-Lady Gaga.
As Rob Fusari, he’s written and produced
for some of the biggest names in the music
business. As a member of the musical
collective Cary NoKey, 8Bit is reimagining music;
part rave, part glam,part indescribable:
all high energy.
What a thrill this is; to finally meet my Sparkle King! *laughs* After doing some research, I can’t think of a better name for you! Where do I even begin? Let’s start perhaps, at the beginning? You’ve been described as a child prodigy; tickling ivories at a very young age at illustrious venues, like Carnegie Hall. Were you self-taught? Were your parents in the music business?
I began classical piano at the age of 8. I found a very strict, old school elderly woman in a small town in New Jersey who threw me right in the hardcore basics. Within one year I had taken a liking to composers like Debussy and Rachmaninoff. At the age of 9, I began competing in nationwide performance completions with thousands of other pianists around the country. Three performers were then chosen to perform a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in New York. I was number 3.
My mother pursued a career as a singer/entertainer but was cut short by her father who did not approve of the lifestyle. Although my mother did not have her "shot", she was in every way possible a "STAR". She lived a very glamorous life, spending countless hours within the "Hollywood" world. She befriended many celebrities including Frank Sinatra , Connie Francis, Muhammad Ali and countless others. In her mind, she believed she was a star, and I always say that's half the battle.
I understand that in a roundabout way, you have a connection to Minneapolis; that after seeing our hometown royalty, “His Royal Badness”, it changed your course of musical direction. What was it about Prince that inspired you?
I was a late bloomer when it came to catching the Prince wave. Sure, I had heard the early records and “Purple Rain”, but when I dove into "Sign of the Times" for the first time, it knocked me off my feet! I finally got it! Prince is a genius performer, songwriter and producer. After seeing him perform for the first time at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, I never looked at "artists" the same way. Everyone seemed to pale in comparison. I had seen a lot of amazing performers as a young adult, but no one commanded the stage in such a way. He would go from playing one instrument to the next with such mastery over the musicality of it all. It was, and to the day, is still astonishing. I would also come to admire his elegantly control of his image from a multi-media standpoint. I have a slogan I use all the time when there is a creative decision to be made, "What would Prince do?"
So the big question: you’re credited as the major source for planting the seed of Stefani Germanotta, who would later grow into Lady Gaga. I’m sure you’ve been asked every question imaginable; and many times over. So not to disappoint the readers, let’s throw one out there: if you had to describe her in one word, what would it be?
MONSTER
Many of us know your work: “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child (thank you for that one, by the way), “Wild Wild West” by Will Smith, and of course, “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga. What song have you written or produced that you are most proud of; your crown jewel? Or hasn’t that been put to paper yet?
The song I feel that brought me an internal "reward" most is a Cary NoKey song called "I Already Have It All". It's my life summed up in a 3 minute song. It's built upon another massive music influence of mine: The Beatles. The lyric speaks of always thinking there is something else, something more out there. We forget all that you could ever long for is already sitting right inside of you. The first step is coming to terms with that fact; that no one or noth-ing worldly or external can make you whole. Everything else is icing on the cake.
I like that, a lot! Speaking of “icing on the cake”, you’ve worked with some of the greatest females in the industry; Whitney Houston, Beyonce’, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and of course, Lady Gaga. How do you define the word “Diva?”
Diva is a tricky word. Sometimes I feel it's more of an adjective than a noun these days. It's used to be used for the female persuasion. Oh no. Not any more. I would side toward the definition in part which suggest temperamental and haughty. Oh wait…..shit, that means I could be a "Diva"!
For a large portion of your career, as Rob Fusari, you were “behind the scenes.” Now, as 8Bit of Cary NoKey, you are in the spotlight. Was it a difficult transition to go from backstage to front and center?
The transition has been way more difficult and way more rewarding than I had ever imagined. It was easy for me, as a producer, to tell an artist to change things: sing stronger, find a "lane", look like a star, perform like a star. I had never realized the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that it took at each hurdle as an artist. Silly me.
As an entertainer, I appreciate all of your glitter and fabulousness, or as I like to call it, your “sparkle.” Who does your styling, and can we just talk about the nails for a second? I love them! *laughs*
Well, let me start by saying thank you for the compliment. I do my own styling; I am a total addict when it comes to fashion. I recently started designing many of the pieces I wear on stage. I love it in the way it brings expression and creative in a way that only each and every one of us can call our own. Music is visual today. I want to know what the "song" looks like as soon as I hear what it sounds like. And yes the nails!!! I discovered gel a few years ago and I become obsessed with nail art. I found a place in lower Manhattan called Valley Nails. It's a small shop with 5 or 6 nail artists. At first they thought I was a bit strange looking to have all these "nail" ideas done to my hands, but after the second or third visit they kinda loved me. Go figure!
In February, you start a two month gig on the RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons “Condragulations” Tour. How did this opportunity come to fruition? Are you a fan of the show?
We had played a show at the Gramercy Theater in New York last year opening for Adore Delano. The RuPaul team was at that show and caught the Cary NoKey performance and imme diately asked us to join the tour!!
Talk about being at the right place at the right time! With the “Condragulations” Tour, you will be in Minneapolis on February 16th at Mill City Nights. What can we expect to see during your set?
The show changes almost every night. Honestly, sometimes I don't even know what to expect. I feed off the energy of the people. I love the interaction and the energy the set brings. Sometimes I describe it as driving your car down the freeway with the windows open, the music blaring, and your right foot to the floor, full on / full speed!
Going back to all of the artists that you’ve collaborated with; is there anyone in the current music world that does it for you? Anyone you’d secretly (or not so secretly) like to work with?
Prince, Prince and Prince! And if Prince ever has a child, then I'll pick Princes' child to work with!!
So the Grammy; what an amazing award and honor! I just have to ask: where do you keep it? And did you sleep with it the night you won it? *laughs*
The Grammy thing is bittersweet for me. Grammy night was the last time I spoke to the artist who I earned the Grammy with. I guess all good things have to come to an end. I threw it out my apartment window from the 32nd floor. I could see some guy pick up one of the pieces of it and walk off. Point is, you never know when a Grammy is heading your way! *hehe*
Lastly, tell us what’s next for you? More performing? More writing and/or producing? More discovering? How about a Cary NoKey CD?It's a Cary Nokey world for me right now. I have not worked or plan to work with outside artists for the time being. I wouldn't be doing them justice by splitting my heart and mind. An artist needs your life blood when you are developing and working with them. The first Cary Nokey full length album is due out next month. It's called Journal 8. The songs are literally built from diary entries that I have kept over the years.
Condragulations! *laughs* And one more thing (LASTLY, I promise!): where can we find you on the internet? Do you have a website? Do you tweet?
I love connecting with my fans, so I am very hands on with my social media! On Twitter @carynokey and Instagram. For upcoming shows: www.CaryNokey.com.!

In 2013, Fusari transformed into 8Bit, of Cary NoKey. He describes the band as: “A lovechild born from the creative spirits of David Bowie, Prince and Thomas Dolby.”www.facebook.com/CARYNOKEY"
Gay, Bi-sexual, Leather, Trans-Gender, Bears, Drag Queens, Gym Boys, Queer, Pansexual, Lesbian and more are all part of the ‘Community.’ You may not be familiar with them, because they don’t get a lot of attention in ‘other publications.’ They do here at SCENE! And they all eat, drink, go to the dentist, the doctor, have homes, purchase clothes and all sorts of other items.
Ever think about this new generation of consumers and their digital life? One thing for sure, they are not going backwards to print. They will keep their faces in their phones, looking for the next place to dance, eat, drink and be seen. We here at SCENE show them all those places, right in the palm of their hand. Why? Because they are already looking there!

Bea Miller's four-track EP Young Blood is available now on iTunes. Full of soaring choruses and sharp-edged pop/rock songs revealing a moody intensity and her rebellious rock-and-roll-spirit, the EP finds Bea joining forces with producers Busbee (P!nk, Kelly Clarkson), Jarrad Rogers (Icona Pop, Demi Lovato), and Mike Del Rio (Kylie Minogue). Young Blood hit #2 on the iTunes Pop Chart and #16 on the overall iTunes album chart.
Having gained exposure on 2012's "X Factor," upstart Bea Miller is poised to make her presence felt on the dance floor via her debut single "Young Blood" (Hollywood Records/SYCO Music). The Garden State native's music is already making waves at Top 40 radio and her remix package garnered her the #1 breakout artist position on the year-end Billboard Dance Chart.

“SAMANTHA REI” collection “BLACK PEARL. “Black Pearl” is inspired by 1920’s Shanghai - the Paris of the East, silent film actress Anna May Wong and Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. Samantha, noticing a
habit of blatant cultural appropriation in an age that could easily be one of
respectful cultural fusion, is harkening back to an era of discovery.
•
Shanghai was inspired by Paris and vice versa. This collection is about one culture discovering another and creating their take on it with the imagery they were given while still being respectful. A beautiful eveningwear collection in black, lavender, gold, silver, mint, royal blue and forest green, this is Samantha’s first special occasion collection and first solo show since 2011. APATICO is creating a new collection for Black Pearl. Previously, each collaboration with Samantha Rei had been a creative challenge that was about pushing her work in new and unexpected directions. Black Pearl is not about that. With this collection, their visions are unified together. Handmade silk flowers, a sophisticated and rich color palette, luxe materials, sculpted structural veils, hand beading and embroidery, tassels, and dramatic shapes adorn headpieces. Celebrate elegance and decadence.
