SCALING Scrum

+My Background

I am Development Team Manager of Vantage Dhaka.

I am working with Scrum teams at Vantage for last one and half years.

I used to work with a number of Scrum teams at Therap prior to my current job.

+What is Scrum?

A proven agile process for Software Development, and other creative team work.

Yes, I have had my 5 minutes of glory in SQABD Lighting Talks 2 talking about it.

+What’s new since SQABD Lighting Talks 2

After using Scrum for more than one and half year, we feel that we are on the right track to take it to the next level by Scaling Scrum.

+Focusing on our local teams

Leaving the Enterprisy jibberish.

Focusing on our local teams, where we may typically have 3 to 10 Scrum teams in an office.

+Scaling Scrum

Can be easily address by having

Scrum of Scrums

+In a regular daily Scrum for a team

We address: What did you do yesterday? What will you do today? What obstacles are in your way or slowing you down?

We prefer not to have technical discussions during daily Scrums.

If technical discussions pop up during Scrum meetings, it is an indication for a dire need of a separate time boxed technical meeting to solve the issue.

+How SoS team forms?

Each team selects their representative for SoS, it is not necessarily the scrum master, and the role can rotate time to time.

Usually the person is technical contributor. If the number of teams is small (like three/four), each team can send two members, scrum master and a technical contributor.

Scrum of Scrums meeting is not necessarily to be done on a daily basis. But for distributed teams, it may be useful to do it daily.

+In SoS we address:

What has your team done since we last met?

What will your team do before we meet again?

Is anything slowing your team down or getting in their way?

Are you about to put something in another team’s way?

+SoS Backlog

After answering previous questions, we can address the SoS backlog which is a common context for all participating team members.

+SoS continued…

Generally on daily scrums we tend not to discuss technical issues, or talk about solving a problem. In SoS, if a problem is identified and the right people to address that problem are together, they should address it then and there. A problem that has risen to the attention of the scrum of scrums meeting participants is often a significant problem that could be affecting the work of up to 100 people.

The scrum of scrums meetings can be scaled up in a recursive manner.
