Margaret Murphy

Head of Arts & Production, SBS Subscription TV

SBS Subscription TV

SBS owns and operates two Subscription TV channels carried

on the FOXTEL platform nationally:

- STUDIO - Australia’s Arts and Entertainment Channel

- World Movies - Australia’s International Movie Channel

Local Production:

- STUDIO – local production and licensed programs

- World Movies - licenses Australian feature films but

does not currently commission original production

What is STUDIO?

• STUDIO is Australia’s dedicated arts and entertainment

channel that launched in April 2010.

• STUDIO features a rich mix of performance,

documentary and some drama showcasing Australian

and international creatives and creativity from Banksy to

Ballet.

STUDIO Local Production

• Over $5m has been invested in local production since

launch.

• STUDIO has produced over 40 hours of local content.

• We have the support of FOXTEL through the FOXTEL

Production Fund.

• Main investment Partners have included Foxtel, Screen

Australia, Screen NSW & The Australia Council.

• Durations have been short form and long form 30 minutes

to 2½ hours.

STUDIO Key Local Productions to date These have included:

- “Creative Minds” a documentary series featuring interviews

with major Australian creatives such as Bill Henson and

Geoffrey Rush.

- “Raising the Curtain” a factual series exploring the rich history

of Australian live theatre.

- Live performances: “Smoke & Mirrors”, “Tina Arena Symphony

of Life”, “Handa Opera La Traviata”, and “Never Did Me Any

Harm”.

- Live transmissions: “Helpmann Awards”.

- Perth, Melbourne, & Sydney “Festival TV”.

- Interstitials produced by an in-house team including a 10 min

book review series called “For The Love Of Books”.

STUDIO Production – a new strategy • Largely one-off productions.

• Largely traditional narrow focussed art forms captured.

• Significant level of short form interstitial programming.

Previous Strategy

• Most programs delivered small audiences.

• One off productions could not build viewer interest/habit to attract repeat viewing & scarce promotional resources meant that it was hard to attract audiences.

• Short form/interstitial programming killed program inheritance.

Key Learnings

• Series rather than one off productions.

• Broader appeal and accessibility targeted. We will follow A&E Networks strategy where documentary was transformed into factual entertainment.

• No short form interstitial programming.

New Strategy
