The is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic
energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these.
The is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those
associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown.
Commonly known as cap and trade, carbon credits are essentially a form of emissions trading. A carbon credit is a a unit
of value ascribed to an offset or reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. One credit is equal to one ton of green house
gases (GHG), namely CO2 (or an equivalent, depending on the market).
Depending on the country you live in, the amount of GHG allowed to be emitted by a particular company is capped at a
certain level. If they exceed this level, a company can offset their excessive emissions by purchasing carbon credits.
Likewise, if a particular company's emissions fall below the cap, they can opt to sell the difference as credits to those
companies who have gone over the cap.
