Introduction to ITS

What is ITS?

Intelligent Transport Systems – is the integration of information and communications technology with transport infrastructure, vehicles and users.

By sharing information, ITS allows people to get more from transport networks, in greater safety, efficiency, security and with less impact on the environment.

Introduction to ITS

Introduction to ITSITS for SafetyMore than 40,000 people die on Europe’s roads each year, costing €200

billion.• ITS can detect hazards on the road ahead and inform drivers before they

are visible; • ITS keep vehicles at a safe distance from one another• ITS inform drivers of the local conditions by constant communication and

information exchange between vehicles and the infrastructure

ITS can save lives and reduce the congestion caused by accidents.

Introduction to ITSITS for EfficiencyCongestion costs the EU 1% of its GDP – around €100 billion – each year.• With funding and space for large-scale road building becoming

increasingly scarce, ITS is the solutions to ease congestion. • Dynamic traffic signal control, advanced incident detection and variable

message sign systems are already being used across Europe.• ITS deliver to vehicles real-time traffic information to enable on-board

navigation systems to decide the optimum route.

Introduction to ITSITS for Efficiency• ITS give public transport users real-time service information, and

smart and seamless ticketing. • ITS enable freight operators and customs authorities to share

information and provide information on the most efficient routes.

Introduction to ITS

ITS for Personal Safety and Public Security

• ITS provide vehicle anti-theft systems to prevent vehicles from being stolen or quickly recover stolen vehicles.

• Intelligent Vision Systems can automatically spot suspicious behaviour at transport hubs and in public transport

• Automatic tracking and alarm systems can speed the response to threats.

Introduction to ITSITS for EnvironmentTransport accounts for 30% of total energy consumption in the EU.• The vast majority of this energy is still consumed by road transport.• ITS can improve the efficiency of passenger and goods transport

and ease congestion on the network, reducing greenhouse emissions and air pollution.

• ITS can increase quality and comfort level of public transport to encourage use of public transport and cut use of private cars.

• ITS can enable drivers and vehicles to operate more efficiently.

Location based ServicesSatellite navigation plays an important role in

many ITS services

Knowing positioning of vehicles, cargos and travellers• Navigation for vehicles and pedestrians• Satellite navigation for fleet management• Satellite navigation for traveller information (positioning-based

information)• Satellite navigation for traffic data collection

Location based Services

Navigation for vehicles and pedestrians

Location based ServicesSatellite Navigation for traffic data collection: Floating vehicle data

Location based Services

Vehicle tracking and monitoring: eCall

Location based Services

Anti-theft Systems

• Automatically report a vehicle being stolen

• Continuously report positioning of the vehicle

• Might be able to remotely slow or stop the vehicle

Communication in ITSNavigation & Communication

Communication in ITS• The majority of ITS applications and services require one

or two way communication.• Currently the communication relies on terrestrial

network: – Radio broadcasting– GSM/ GPRS– WiFi/ WiMAX

Communication in ITSRadio Broadcasting: RDS-TMC

Each traffic incident is sent as a Traffic Message. One message consists of time, an event code and a location code. The message is coded according to the standard which can be translated by a TMC receiver into the language of the user. The source of traffic information is typically police, traffic cameras, loops, floating vehicle data and others.

Communication in ITSGSM/GPRS: German HGV road user charging

• Distance-based toll for all trucks of 12 tonnes and over• 700m investment• Complex system but without disruption of traffic• OBU for positioning, monitoring and billing• GSM is used to authorise payment• Infrared DSRC for enforcement

Communication in ITS• Communication plays an important role in ITS• Currently communication relies on terrestrial

communication only. • Alternative communication solution?

Application of Satellite Communication in ITS

Application of Satellite Communication in US

• Receiving traffic information via satellite radio• Vehicle Tracking• Automatic Crash Response• Remote Vehicle Diagnostics

24

Application of Satellite Communication in ITS

In Europe:

• Satcom is not yet deployed in ITS• This is no satellite radio broadcasting• Benefits have not been fully understood• Cost is the main concern• Still in research stage

25

Applications of Satcom in ITS

Satcoms in support of transport on European roads

• FP6 Project• SISTER is to establish how satellite communications can be used as

part of the operational implementation of ITS applications.• SISTER does not perform research into the development of NEW

applications but will investigate how the operation of satellite affects the operation of such services.
