The Industrial Series (I-Series) horizontal compressors can handle your gas processing needs...Corken’s line of single and two-stage horizontal compressors has been designed to transfer a wide range of process gases, including: butadiene, hydrogen, helium, methyl chloride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, HCFCs, and more. They are highly reliable in applications as varied as compression of exotic gases for research, process gas compression in the chemical industry, compression of corrosive biogas from landfills and gas boosting in the petroleum industry.
Meeting new environmental standards...Corken now offers a new T-Style horizontal compressor for applications where leakage control is critical. The T-Style design has three sets of packing that create two distance pieces that can be purged or padded for maximum leakage control or containment (see figure 1 on page 4 for details).
When properly equipped with a purge kit, Corken’s double-distance-piece (T-style) design provides precise leakage control and complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regulations 40 CFR CH Section 264 .1053.
For corrosive applications, Corken offers a special coating that prevents corrosion and wear of critical parts within the compressor. The coating is a nickel alloy plating which is impregnated with fluorocarbons. Optional materials for compressor parts are available for various gases as required.

Features and Benefits
No contamination of process gas stream...To meet the stringent requirements of today’s markets, Corken’s new T-Style (double-distance piece) horizontal compressors are oil-free. The T-Style has three sets of segmented packing to help control oil carryover. In addition, the extra space between the crankcase and the compression chamber eliminates rod over travel. In other words, the portion of the piston rod that comes into contact with the first set of packing will never reach the second set of packing while the portion of the piston rod that comes into contact with the second set of packing will never reach the third set of packing.
Sized for your capacity needs…Since Corken’s single- and two-stage horizontal compressors are available with a variety of cylinder sizes ranging from 8 to 2.75 inches, they can provide a wide range of flows and pressures to meet your specific requirements. The cylinder sizes may be arranged in various combinations of single- and two-stages.

Features and Benefits
More than just a compressor...Corken supplies custom engineered packages to meet the most demanding customer specifications. Skid mounted units can be supplied with control panels, safety controls, pulsation dampeners, receiver tanks, valves and other special accessories as required. Corken also offers standard mountings designed specifically for liquefied gas transfer, vapor recovery and gas booster applications.
Serviceability...Corken compressors are designed to minimize maintenance as well as simplify the maintenance process. Maintenance operations such as valve replacement may be accomplished without disturbing the piping, while ring replacement may be accomplished simply by removing the head.

Single and Double Distance Piece Designs
Plain style horizontal compressors...The plain style HG601/HG602 series is not oil-free. The plain style has one set of oil wiper rings and one set of packing that forms one distance piece. Plain style horizontal compressors are typically used in non corrosive applications where oil-free gas is not required and leakage containment is not critical. Examples would be natural gas, nitrogen and air boosting applications.
New T-Style horizontal compressors...The T-Style THG601/THG602 series is an oil-free design that has one set of oil wiper rings and three sets of packing that form two distance pieces or barriers to external leakage (see Figure 1 for details). For a wide range of application flexibility, each distance piece has its own line connections and can be pressurized, purged or vented separately. This allows you to choose the best method of containment based on the requirements of your specific application. For added convenience, purge kits with all of the accessories needed to control the purging or pressurization of each chamber are available. T-Styles are typically used in corrosive applications where leakage containment and non-contamination of the gas stream are critical.
Single- and two-stage configurations for plain and T-Style…The HG601/THG601 series single-stage compressors are typically used in applications where the gas compression ratio is less than 5:1. Applications such as liquefied gas transfer are generally better suited for a single-stage compressor (which can take advantage of the relatively low differential pressures and offer extremely efficient gas compression). Transport, rail car and marine unloading by vapor differential are examples of such an operation.
The HG602/THG602 series two-stage compressors are typically used in applications where the gas compression ratio is greater than 5:1. Two-stage compressors divide the compression process into two separate steps and allow the gas to be cooled after the first stage of compression, which results in a lower final discharge temperature. Two-stage compressors are commonly used in booster and vapor recovery applications.
Available in single or double-acting configurations...The plain and T-Style horizontal compressors are available in single or double-acting configurations. Single-acting configurations are ideal for applications that require low flow and high pressure while double-acting configurations offer maximum capacity. Single-acting configurations require the use of a blank valve option.

Industrial Horizontal Gas Compressor Options
Corken offers many options and accessories...Adjustable Clearance Head Option: Adjustable clearance heads enable you to balance the pressure load between stages by increasing the clearance volume of a cylinder and are recommended for all two-stage horizontal compressors. Balancing the pressure load reduces the temperature and vibration of the compressor and provides a longer service life.
Piston Rod Material Options: To help extend the life of your compressor, piston rods are available with Nitride coating.
Packing Options: Segmented packing used in conjunction with small springs offers excellent leakage control.
Safety and Control Switches: Corken can supply safety shutdown switches for pressure, temperature, liquid level and vibration to meet international and U.S. specifications. These switches, in conjunction with a control panel, can effectively automate the operation of the compressor.
Liquid Traps: Corken offers automatic electric traps. The automatic electric design incorporates two or more liquid level switches depending on specific requirements. Custom traps are available on package units.
Corken’s liquid trap provides the most thorough liquid separation (see Figure 2) and is American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code stamped. It contains two level switches: one for alarm and one for shutdown. In some cases the alarm switch is used to activate a dump valve (not included with trap) or sound an alarm so the operator can drain the trap using the manual drain valve at the bottom of the trap. The manual drain valve is supplied with this trap. This trap also contains a mist pad. A mist pad is a mesh of interwoven wire designed to remove fine liquid mists.
Intercoolers/Aftercoolers: Corken offers water-cooled and air-cooled intercoolers/aftercoolers in a variety of materials. Custom designed heat exchangers are available for applications which require extra cooling or special material considerations.
MC1002 Coating: This coating significantly increases component life in corrosive gas service. It will not peel or chip and offers increased corrosion, moisture, abrasion and chemical resistance. Lab tests indicate that piston rings can last up to three times longer when used with an MC1002-coated cylinder.
Suction Valve Unloaders: Unloaders may be used to provide loadless starting and/or constant speed unloading. Loadless starting is required in applications which have a high initial differential pressure. Constant speed unloading allows for loading and unloading the compressor while it is running rather than stopping and starting the compressor in order to control capacity.

Industrial Horizontal Gas Compressor OptionsALLOY 50 piston rings and rod packing: ALLOY 50 (a proprietary composition) is recommended when compressing a very dry gas with a high K value. These gases tend to have high operating temperatures and offer minimal lubricating qualities. ALLOY 50 extends the service life of the piston rings and rod packing and minimizes leakage.
Optional Materials: Corken has several material options for a variety of compressor parts. Piston rings are available in ALLOY 50, PEEK and other filled PTFE‚ blends. Valve plates are available in stainless steel and PEEK materials. Optional materials for piston rods are also available. O-rings are offered in PTFE, Viton®, Buna-N or Neoprene®1. Consult the factory for optional materials that can be specified on special applications.
Mounting Options: Corken offers three standard mountings for our industrial horizontal compressors. The 103 mounting is a basic mounting and allows for maximum flexibility for on-site installation. The 107C has a 4-way valve and liquid trap and is designed for LTVR (liquid transfer vapor recovery) applications. The 109C mounting does not have a 4-way valve but has a liquid trap for use in liquefied gas applications. The 109C mounting is best suited when vapor recovery is not required. The information below gives a more detailed explanation of the standard horizontal mountings.

Options to match your application...Corken offers numerous options that adapt to your compression needs. The table on the following page lists some of the more common gases and some of the hazards associated with these gases. As noted, certain gases or gas mixtures are corrosive, flammable, explosive or toxic. Many of these factors will affect the selection of the compressor and accompanying options. Some of the more common options are matched up with the assorted gases listed on the following table; however, this is not a comprehensive list of required options so consult Corken before specifying your compressor options. Corken’s application engineers can quickly recommend the most suitable materials of construction and component options necessary for the optimal performance.
