Growing in Grace Presentation of the Lord
Prayer for the Week: The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.
“I decided to consult the Chair of Peter, where that faith is found exalt-ed by the lips of an Apostle; I now come to ask for nourishment for my soul there, where once I received the garment of Christ. I follow no leader save Christ, so I enter into communion with your beatitude, that is, with the Chair of Peter, for this I know is the rock upon which the church is built.” – St. Jerome, 420 A.D.
Chair of St. Peter The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter is celebrated on February 22, traditional-ly known as the day that St. Peter bore witness to the Divinity of Christ by the Sea of Tiberias, and was appointed by Christ to be the Rock (Cephas) of His Church. In other words, the day Christ appointed Peter as the first Pope. The authority St. Peter and his successors received from Christ is symbolized by a chair or “cathedra.”
"‘Cathedra’ literally means the established seat of the Bishop, placed in the mother church of a diocese which for this reason is known as a ‘cathedral’; it is the symbol of the Bishop's authority and in particular, of his ‘magisterium,’ that is, the evangelical teaching which, as a successor of the Apostles, he is called to safeguard and to transmit to the Christian Commu-nity...
So what was the ‘Chair’ of St Peter? Chosen by Christ as the ‘rock’ on which to build the Church (cf. Mt 16: 18), he began his ministry in Jerusa-lem, after the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. The Church's first ‘seat’ was the Upper Room, and it is likely that a special place was reserved for Simon Peter in that room where Mary, Mother of Jesus, also prayed with the disciples.
Subsequently, the See of Peter was Antioch, a city located on the Oronte River in Syria, today Turkey, which at the time was the third metropolis of the Roman Empire after Rome and Alexandria in Egypt. Peter was the first Bishop of that city, which was evangelized by Barnabas and Paul...
From there, Providence led Peter to Rome…, where he ended his race at the service of the Gospel with martyrdom… The See of Rome, after St Peter's travels, thus came to be recognized as the See of the Successor of Peter, and its Bishop's "cathedra" represented the mission entrusted to him by Christ to tend his entire flock...
Celebrating the Chair of Peter, therefore, as we are doing today, means at-tributing a strong spiritual significance to it and recognizing it as a privi-leged sign of the love of God, the eternal Good Shepherd, who wanted to gather his whole Church and lead her on the path of Salvation.” - Pope Benedict XVI, General Audience, February 22, 2006

Ash Wednesday is a Day of Fasting and Abstinence Catholics are obliged to undertake certain penances as part of Lent:
1. Abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays in Lent - If you are 14 and older and in good health.
2. Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday If you are from the ages of 18-59 and in good health.
How to fast: On a day of fasting you may eat one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal.
L ent is just around the corner and with it comes the usual asso-ciations of the season: ashes on our foreheads, denial of cer-tain goods as penance, and the bowl of loose change for the poor, to name a few. To offset these penances, we can also
think of a few consolations of this season, Stations of the Cross, a greater sense of our need for the Lord, and my personal favorite as child: the parish fish-fry!
When we consider the musical associations of the Lenten season, what usually comes to mind? Perhaps the somber melody of Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days or the plaintive O Sacred Head, Sur-rounded, the poignancy of At the Cross Her Station Keeping, or the sober Take Up Thy Cross. A familiar association to many Catholics in our country perhaps, is the use of chant for the Sanctus and Agnus Dei. Indeed, one can almost instantly hear its beautiful yet stark mel-ody in the ear. All these texts (and tunes), paired with the absence of instrumental music help us to realize the gravity of the season.
This coming Lent offers a new (to us) association with the Lenten sea-son. At the choral Mass (usually 9:30 am) the Adult Choir will sing the Latin setting of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei of Mass XVII taken from the Roman Kyriale. Together with the Kyrie that we sang during Ad-vent, they form the Mass that is prescribed for ‘Sundays in Advent and Lent’. What you will notice immediately is the bright, almost joyous nature of the melodies. In fact, each melody is written in the Lydian mode; the joyful mode! These melodies are meant to be a musical balm, as it were; a reminder that the Lenten Sundays are a reprieve from the rigors of the week. In short, the music is meant to clothe this solemn season with a joyful melody and to provide a consolation to the faithful.
This is not purely coincidence. When one considers the Gospel read-ings of each Sunday in Lent: the temptation of Christ, the Transfigura-tion of our Lord, the Samaritan woman at the well, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus, they are all moments of great joy and con-solation. Moreover, we have an entire Sunday dedicated to rejoicing where we momentarily throw off the violet vestments for the more joyful color of rose. The motive is clear: persevere to end of this holy season. Hopefully, this truth will be reflected in the music for Lent, strengthening us all in our spiritual journey in the coming weeks.

Spiritual Adoption Update: Month One of Your Baby’s Development My Heart Started Beating today!! During this first amazing month of life, the baby grows to 10,000 times his size at conception. He is totally dependent upon his mother. In the womb, blood ves-sels from mother and baby intertwine without joining, highlighting this newly formed relationship – mutual, nourishing and deeply connected. By the third week the baby’s tiny heart begins to beat. Please remember to pray for your spiritually adopted baby. Around 90% of abortions occur in this first trimester. Your baby is counting on you!
Over 1000 babies have been adopted through St. Philip’s Spiritual Adoption Program so far!
For the Kids: Spiritual Adoption Puzzle This weekend, pick up your copy of the new Spiritual Adoption Puzzle Page. Beginning this week, there will be a new puzzle piece in the bul-letin that you can cut out and add to your game each week to fill in the picture. The three Sundays leading up to Lent were once a special season of preparation. Fr. Allan Hawkins concludes his series on these “Gesima” Sundays as we prepare to begin Lent this week.
Ready to Run Preparing for Lent
By Fr. Allan Hawkins
S elf-examination is the necessary starting place for true contri-tion. We cannot repent truly until we understand just what is expected of us. If the Lenten season is about the “one thing necessary,” if it is a school in conversion to Christ, a grappling
with the heart of his Gospel, the “Gesimas” were an invaluable begin-ning to that process. Through the liturgy of the “Gesimas” the Church guided us as we examined our consciences for three weeks, so prepar-ing us for our Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As Passiontide dawns, we face the throne of God’s mercy, where our deliverance is secured. And then Easter dawns, with all the promise of forgiveness secured, grace freely offered.
Today, and on the previous Sundays in Ordinary Time this year, our attention has been drawn to Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, in which we have learned something of the true cost of disciple-ship. Reading the Decalogue and singing a heart-rending Kyrie might open up a new focus on how our encounter with God’s grace begins in knowing the full measure of his will.
We know how important it is to make good and well-thought plans, well in advance, for the important events in our lives; and the more signifi-cant the event, the more time and effort we will put into the prepara-tion. Easter is the “Queen of Feasts” – and Lent is the longest and most important period of preparation for our celebration of it. Since Lent is so important for us, we should also plan and prepare for Lent itself.
After today (Quinquagesima or “50 days”), we look forward to Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Maybe those Sundays with those long-exotic names offer something we’ve been missing in the last few decades. Pulling them out again might help us to keep a more holy Lent. These days had Roman Stations, just like all the days of Lent it-self. In ancient times, the catechumens were taken to the Station Masses where they underwent Scrutinies so that they could fully under-stand the significance and seriousness of the commitment they were about to undertake as they made their Baptismal vows. We will our-selves be renewing precisely those same vows as we take part in the Resurrection at Easter.
