Pentecost Sunday
Today, the church not only commemorates the Pentecost, but above all, participates in the mystery of the Ho-
ly Spirit, which is sent today to the church. We read the Word of God in the Holy Mass and not only go back to the
history and remember what happened once, but we participate in this event as if it is taking place now. We become
participants in the events. In the event of Pentecost we have signs, one of which is about the action of the Spirit and
the other that the Holy Spirit really works or the affects. The upper room, the place where the apostles gathered is
now a place sanctified by the Eucharist, love, good and now even sad. Despite Jesus' coming after his death to
strengthen his disciples, a lot does not happen in their hearts. They still feel sadness and a fear of Jews. A note of un-
certainty intertwines their lives. What's next… In today's first reading, we hear about fire and wind, these are signs
that show something will happen here! God will come with His power. God is not in the signs of fire and wind, but
instead, God reveals himself in man, including man’s actions. This is his favorite way to manifest His power. We see
such things happening every day in us. We see actions, we observe things and people, and the truth comes to us, God
comes to me, to us, to act in us, to change, to make us better. Pentecost has very important affects; one is the apostles
leave the Upper Room. They go out to people they are afraid of and fear. Another, is they gain the ability to com-
municate with the crowd around them. They speak their languages and they are understood, though they are Galile-
ans. What does it mean to speak a foreign language? It shows that you have taken the effort and the time to learn and
communicate thus revealing that we're important and you love us. If you speak your brother or your sister's language,
then you love them. You think by their values. You want to be in their world. It is the Holy Spirit who comes to you
today, and every day, who speaks in your language so that you understand. He respects you, loves you, cares for you,
and leads you. There is only one question, whether you respect Him too, whether you are grateful and if you pay
with goodness and love of everyday life. Does my gratefulness reflect my everyday choice?

Make Me Laugh!!!
A parish administrator requested bids from
local painters to repaint the outside of the
Pastoral Center. Almost all of the bids were
within a few dollars of one another, with the
exception of one by a parishioner who had
been in business for years and had an
excellent reputation in the community. This
particular painter’s bid was about half of his
competitions, and naturally, the administrator
accepted it.
On the day he was to begin, the painter
realized that he had miscalculated badly. Not wanting to lose the job,
however, he decided to thin the paint with water. That way, he thought,
he would be able to complete the job for the price quoted.
A week later, he received a call from the administrator, complaining that
after the first rain half of the paint had washed off the building. Being an
honorable man and a good Catholic, the painter went inside to pray
about the situation, knowing that his business’ reputation was on the
line.
“What can I possible do, Lord?” prayed the discouraged painter.
In a loud voice God replied, “Repaint! Repaint and thin no more!”
The Dickeyville Grotto and Shrines

The Dickeyville Grotto and Shrines were erected
by Father Matthias Wernerus, pastor of the Holy
Ghost Parish from 1918 to 1931. His handiwork in
stone, built from 1925-1930, is dedicated to the
unity of two great
American ideals-love of God and love of Country.
These religious and patriotic shrines were con-
structed
without the use of blueprints.
There are several shrines in the Grotto garden.
Besides the main shrine (which houses the Grotto of the Blessed Virgin), there is a
patriotic shrine, the sacramental shrine of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacred Heart shrine,
Christ the King shrine, Fatima shrine, and the Stations of the Cross.

“Beauty is indeed a good gift of God” – St. Augustine, City of God, Chapter 22
Beauty is an integral and essential part of the Catholic liturgy. It is indeed a gift
from God, as St. Augustine points out. But is much more than a fleeting stimulus to the
senses. Beauty is an enduring, tangible, and necessary indication of the Lord. When beauty
has been allowed to wither, the liturgy and the faithful are moved away, however uninten-
tionally, from the divine presence.
Beauty has long been important to the Church throughout the centuries, as an
appropriate setting for the Mass. But it has been marginalized in recent memory, under the
assumption that it serves merely as a display of Man’s earthly wealth and arrogance. Beau-
ty has been intentionally and systematically removed from the Church, to the point where
many have felt the void. Why has Beauty been cast aside?
Beauty is the single aspect of God which can be expressed physically within the
earthly realm. It is critical to the setting of the Mass. God is present at the Mass, in the
Eucharist. The church stands as the dwelling place of the Lord on Earth, and “reflects the
Church dwelling in Heaven” (Built of Living Stones, #17). Beauty is not merely Man’s
arrogance or a waste of resources which could be directed to the poor. Beautiful settings,
artwork, music, and liturgy are appropriate and necessary aspects of God’s everlasting
mystical presence before Mankind.

Please remember to take the time, now that the churches are opening back up, to enjoy the
beauty that is within our church. Spend a moment after mass to study the stain glass win-
dows or step forward and look closely at Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Look upon the splendor
and the craftsmanship, and remember our history, love of God, and beauty in the world.
