Reflec ons with the Word of God from your parish priests
St. Cecilia parishioners: let us pray believing in the power of prayer to fill all lives with an abundance of goodness, truth, and beauty as we are able in our Lord Jesus’ hallowed name!
August 2 – 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Read Ma hew: 14: 13-21 In this gospel we watch Jesus withdraw in quiet to pray a er hearing the tragic beheading and death of John the Bap st. God gives him consola on and Jesus in turn pays forward this Divine generosity to people who are suffering with anguish, hunger, and pain. In simplicity he takes the li le they offer, raises his eyes to heaven in prayer, and returns an abundance with more le overs than one could imagine.
“Hallowed be thy Name” is to praise God for His Spirit to live deeply in our faith to conquer evil, to create an abundance of love and generosity making us all be er people. During these difficult mes will you offer more me to pray with Jesus?
Pray for each other as we are his Church, all civic leaders from the president to local officials. Pray for an end: to the pandemic, the civil unrest, all injus ce and poverty, the opioid and substance abuse addic ons, the violence, the hopelessness, and many other concerns. Pray that we may restore our belief that we are one na on under God and for all evil to be conquered. Pray thy will be done.

OUR DEEPEST NEEDS
The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for sa sfac on. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand peo-ple from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scrip-tures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” A er material needs are sa sfied and, in some cases, over-sa sfied, many people s ll experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are mul plied in today’s Gos-pel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the sa sfac on of the deepest needs that only God can fill. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER AND HUMILITY
Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword, wear humili-ty rather than fine clothes. —St. Dominic
THIRST
You have put salt in our mouths that we may thirst for you. —St.
