Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila
Glinka was a classically trained Russiancomposerwhodevelopedanationalstylethatinfluenced later Russian composers a greatdeal.Hegrewup inawealthy family, enjoyedcomposing andplayingmusic, and likemanyof his peers became a civil servant. Ill healthprovokedhimintotravellingtoItaly, wherehemet composers Donizetti and Bellini, amongothers. Then visits to Vienna andBerlin gavehim a better understanding of Germanicmusical styles. On his return to Russia hestarted to composemusicwithadistinctivelyRussiancharacter. He later informally tutoredRimsky-Korsakov and the other members of the group of young composers known as “The Mighty Handful,” who were influencedbyhisnationalisticstyle.Hisfirstopera,A Life for the Tsar (1836), was a great success. Forhis secondopera he discussed thepossibilityof collaborating with the poet Pushkin onan opera based on Pushkin’s poem Ruslanand Lyudmila. Before work could be started, Pushkinwaskilled in aduel, and the libretto, which was worked on by several librettists, was confusing and probably caused theless than successful premiere in 1842. Theoverture, however, hasprovedtobeapopularupbeat concert piece. Its explosive openingleads to chirpywoodwind solos on the samemelody.Acontrastingcellotuneisexpandedin imitation and with varied orchestral colorsbefore a reprise of bothmusical ideas and aspeedy end.
John Adams, The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra
When John Adams was commissioned by the NationalEndowment for theArts tocomposeapiecefortheMilwaukeeSymphonyOrchestra,he was working on his opera Nixon in China. The Chairman Dances iswhatAdamscallsan“out-take”oftheopera,musicthatimaginesa
dance scene at the end of the opera, but that doesnotexist in this form in theopera itself.Adams describes the scene when Madame Mao“interruptsthetiredformalitiesofastatebanquet, disrupts the slow moving protocol and invites the Chairman, who is present only as a gigantic forty-foot portrait on thewall, to ‘come down, old man, and dance.’Themusic takes full cognizance of her pastas a movie actress. Themes, sometimes slinky and sentimental, at other timesbravura and bounding, ride above in bustlingfabric of energized motives.” The work wasfirst performed in 1986 by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
Felix Mendelssohn, Violin Concerto in E Minor, op. 64
MendelssohncomposedhisViolinConcerto in E Minor for his friend and colleague, the virtuoso Ferdinand David, who gave the premiere in 1845. It has become an iconic part of the Romantic repertoire. Althoughwe normally think of Mendelssohn as acomparatively conservative composer whofollowed his Classical predecessors in manyrespects, inthispiecehestruckout inseveralnotable ways, some of which influenced later composers. First, the expected three-movement plan is in place, but instead ofseparatemovements, the concerto is playedwithout any break. Second, Mendelssohnomitstheexpectedorchestralopeningsection, instead giving the solo violinist the firstmelody immediately. Indeed, the orchestra, though importanttotheoverallpiece, seldomintroducesnewideas, andseldomplaysalonefor any length of time. Lastly, Mendelssohnplaces the first movement’s cadenza in anunexpected place and begins and ends it inunexpectedways.
The first movement opens gently, with atuneful first theme played simply by thesoloist. Themore virtuosic solomoments are

neverextreme, and the soloist returns to thestraightforwardmelody.Thenextnew theme is heard in the orchestra for all of four measuresbeforethesoloisttakesthatuptoo.Even when flutes and clarinets play a newmelody, the soloist is still present, holdinga pedal note on the lowest open string ofthe instrument. As the development sectioncomes to a close, the soloist starts to play wide-spread broken chords which merge imperceptibly into the cadenza. There isno improvisation here, unlike many earlierconcertos. Mendelssohn composed thecadenza so that itmerges smoothlywith themusic before and after it. Its end comes as the violinist returns to the broken chord figure whiletheorchestraquietlybeginstheprimarytheme underneath. The movement ends with several faster changes of tempo, and whenthe rest of the orchestra is silenced a lone bassoonnotecontinuestobeheld.
This bassoon note provides the connection to the slower secondmovement. It is in ternaryform, A-B-A. The outer sections are based on another lyricalmelody. The B section, whichis somewhat more agitated, is introduced by the orchestra but, as in the rest of the work, thesoloistisnotsilentforlong.
Thethirdmovementbegins immediatelyafterthe second ends. A short allegretto section links the two, before the tempo picks up toallegro and a small fanfare begins themainmovement. With a changeof key toEmajor, the mood is upbeat, and there is almost constant motion from beginning to end.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade
Rimsky-Korsakov was largely self-taught asa musician, but despite that he eventuallybecame a facultymember at the St. PetersburgConservatory, where he continued his explorations of orchestral tone colors and
study of counterpoint. Beautiful, bright, andoriginal orchestral colors are a feature of his symphonic suite Scheherazade.
He completed the work in 1888, and it wasgiven its premiere in St. Petersburg that year. The four-movement symphonic work is based loosely on stories fromA Thousand and One Nights, but Rimsky-Korsakov alsoexpressed concern that the audience shouldbe able to listen purely musically, withoutfollowingadetailedstory.Heprefacedthescore by writing: “All I had desired was that the listener, if he liked my piece as symphonic music, shouldcarryaway the impression that it is beyond doubt an Oriental narrative of somenumerousandvariedfairy-talewondersand notmerely four pieces played one afteranother and composed on the basis of themescommontoallfourmovements.”
DespiteRimsky-Korsakov’swords, it isalmostimpossible not to picture the gruff, oftenforceful Sultan in the opening theme, northe delicate, charming Scheherazade in theornamental high violin solos. The Sultan hasvowedthatnowifeofhiswill livebeyondthefirstnightof theirmarriage, becausehe is soconvinced that all women are deceptive andcheating.Scheherazade, wantingtostayalive, tells a series of riveting stories night after night, making the Sultan delay orderingher death, until after 1,001 nights he finally retractshisorderofexecutionforgood.
Thefirstmovement is “TheSeaandSinbad’sShip,” where we are introduced immediately to the two characters. Strings establishthe rolling motion of the sea (something Rimsky-Korsakovwasveryfamiliarwith,havingserved in theRussiannavy for several years),and the Sultan’s theme is transformed in variousways as the sea journey takes place. Wehear remindersofScheherazade’s theme asshetellsthestory.

The second movement is “The Story of thePrinceKalendar.” ItopenswithScheherazade, accompanied as usual by the harp, then aleisurely bassoon solo melody over stringdrones. The oboe takes up themelody withmore energy; then the strings give it an altogether livelier character. A brass fanfarebrings back the Sultan’s theme, and leads totwosubstantialcadenzas, oneforclarinet, theother for bassoon. The music becomes more and more lively as the tempo speeds up to the end.
“The Young Prince and Princess” has aslowish beginning, with a lyrical melodyplayed primarily by strings with woodwindflourishes. Themoodchangesabruptlywhen
the snare drum introduces a new jauntytune. An extended solo by the solo violinbrings a return of the slower tempo and opening theme.
The finale is entitled “The Festival in Bagdad—The Ship Goes to Pieces on a Rock.” The music is fast and swirling, withpercussion instruments urging the music forward. The Sultan is glimpsed throughthe swirls, then he eventually steps forwardforcefully. The rolling sea and the fanfare return, and thework endswith an extendedversionofScheherazade’stheme.
