Introduction
The Jangro Proficiency Manual includes 39Safe Working Procedure Notes that providestep-by-step instruction and guidance intothe main duties that cleaning operativeswould normally be expected to carry out andto assist in acquiring the basic skills necessaryfor any section of the Cleaning Industry.
The information is presented in a mannerwhich will allow ease of learning and drawsattention to particular areas of concern, e.g.Health & Safety, with our handy “Safety FirstSection” together with suggestions forappropriate Personal Protective Equipmentwhich should be worn for each task. Themanual also recommends the most suitableJangro Product for each task from the currentJangro Catalogue.
The contents of the manual if communicatedcorrectly to cleaning operatives will satisfyHealth & Safety Requirements for SafeSystems of Work and together with many ofthe other Jangro Health & Safety Resourcematerials will help to create a saferenvironment.
For more detailed information regarding anycleaning task or problem which my beencountered when cleaning you may wish tosource the Jangro “Training for ResultsResource Pack”. Mop Sweeping (Dry Floors Only)
Activity
Removal of dirt & grit from the floor in order to minimise wear of the floorpolish.
Purpose
Equipment Checklist� Mop sweeper.
� Dust pan and brush.
� Vacuum Cleaner and attachments.
� Warning signs.
� Residual Circuit Breaker.
� Plastic refuse sack.
� Scraper.
Personal Protective Equipment Required� Protective Overall.
� Protective Neoprene or PVC Gloves.
Safety First� Check if machine is fitted with a Residual Current Device (RCD).
� Ensure RCD is in power socket before inserting vacuum cleaner plug.
� Ensure Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.
� Place Warning signs at the extremes of the work area prior to the work commencing.
� Physically check the condition of all equipment before and after use, particularly plugs and cables.
� Check handle is smooth before operation (rough handles may cause splinters).
� Do not leave mop sweeper unattended at any time (especially lying on floor).
� Clean all equipment after every use.
� When cleaning several rooms, remove dust after each room, ensure dust is not transferred form
one room to another.

Step by Step Guide1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety, paying particular
attention to vacuum cleaner plug and cable.
3. Place warning signs at the extremes of the work area.
4. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the vacuum cleaner
to the to the power supply.
5. Remove chewing gum or other litter with scraper.
6. Sweep using a continuous stroke (straight or in figures of eight) overlapping at each return stroke.
Ensure mop sweeper head remains in contact with the floor at all times and that a leading edge is
maintained at all times. Sweep under heavy furniture, move lighter furniture and replace.
7. Use dust pan and brush in all corners.
8. When sweeping large areas, collect dust with pan several times.
9. If mop sweeper retains dirt , clean using vacuum cleaner.
10. Cover all areas systematically ensuring all areas are completed.
11. When completed ensure all soil is collected with dust pan and brush and clean mop sweeper
with vacuum cleaner before storing.
12. Remove the plug and circuit breaker from the electricity supply, and recoil the cable.
13. Clean all equipment and check all items for safety.
14. Return all items of equipment to the storage area and store safely and securely.
Care of Equipment� Store mop sweeper with head up.
� To clean mop sweeper head, detach handle, wash and rinse thoroughly and hang.

Activity

Purpose

Step by Step Guide1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety.
3. Place warning signs at the extremes of the work area.
4. Ventilate the area.
5. Remove chewing gum or other litter with scraper.
6. Prepare cleaning solution following manufacturer’s instructions (product must be added to the
water).
7. Apply solution to an area of floor using the mop.
8. Mop the floor using a figure of eight stroke with each pass overlapping.
9. Clean adjacent to skirtings by “cutting in” parallel to skirtings.
10. Use abrasive pad to remove stubborn marks.
11. Ensure bucket is behind line of work.
12. When ringing out mop, stand in front of wringer and press down firmly.
13. Change cleaning solution when dirty.
14. Re-charge mop with clean solution as required.
15. Wipe skirtings with cloth to remove splashes.
16. Leave floor as dry as possible and leave warning signs in place until dry.
17. Clean all equipment and check all items for safety.
18. Return all items of equipment to the storage area and store safely and securely.
19. Return warning signs to store when floor is completely dry.
Care of Equipment� Remove mop from handle, wash and allow to air dry.
� If re-assembled store head up.
� Wash abrasive pad and allow to air dry.
� Wash buckets, wipe inside and out and store upside down.
Safety First� Ensure Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.
� Place Warning signs at the extremes of the work area prior to the work commencing.
� Physically check the condition of all equipment before and after use. Check handle is smooth

Step by Step Guide1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.

4. Ventilate the area.

6. In one bucket prepare cleaning solution following manufacturer’s instructions (product must be
added to the water).
7. Fill second bucket with clean water for rinsing.
8. Apply cleaning solution to an area of floor using the mop.
9. Mop the floor using a figure of eight stroke with each pass overlapping.
10. Clean adjacent to skirtings by “cutting in” parallel to skirtings.
11. Use abrasive pad to remove stubborn marks.
12. Ensure buckets are behind line of work.
13. Use separate, preferably colour coded, mops for applying cleaning solution and rinse water.
14. When ringing out mop, stand in front of wringer and press down firmly.
15. Remove as much cleaning solution from floor as possible before rinsing.
16. Repeat mopping process using rinse mop and the clean water.
17. Wipe skirtings with cloth to remove splashes.
18. Leave floor as dry as possible and leave warning signs in place until dry.
19. Clean all equipment and check all items for safety.
20. Return all items of equipment to the storage area and store safely and securely.
21. Return warning signs to store when floor is completely dry.
Care of Equipment� Remove mop heads from handles, wash and allow to air dry.
� If re-assembled store head up.
� Wash abrasive pad and allow to air dry.
� Wash buckets, wipe inside and out and store upside down.
Safety First� Ensure Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.

Removal of scuff marks & soilage to improve appearance & durability of thefloor polish.
Purpose

� Cleaning Agent.

Buffing/Polishing machine.

Step by Step Guide1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety, paying particular
attention to plugs and cables.
3. Place warning signs at the extremes of the work area.
4. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the machine to the
power supply.
5. If the scrubber/polishing machine is fitted with a tank, disconnect the water feed prior to buffing.
6. Prepare cleaning solution as per manufacturer’s instructions (always add product to water) and
place in the hand or machine spray bottle with correct label attached.
7. Pick up large items of litter by hand and mop sweep floor.
8. Spray a fine mist from about 1 metre above floor over an area of approximately 2m2, taking care
not to over spray other areas.
9. Pass the machine over the damp areas and buff until dry and highly polished, using overlapping
strokes to ensure an even appearance.
10. Spray clean area adjacent to skirtings by “cutting in” parallel to skirtings. Wipe skirtings using a
clean cloth.
11. Position the cable behind the line of work to ensure it is not caught in the machine drive plate or
tripped over.
12. Check the pad/brush for damage and cleanliness regularly, turn pad over or change it or clean it as
necessary.
13. If required mop sweep the floor after spray cleaning.
14. Clean equipment and check for safety.
15. Return all equipment, materials and warning signs to store and store safely and securely.
Safety First� Ensure Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.
� Ventilate area.
� Place Warning signs at the extremes of the work area prior to the work commencing.
� Check electrical equipment particularly plugs and cables.
� Check if machine is fitted with a Residual Current Device (RCD).
� Ensure RCD is in power socket before inserting machine plug.
� Do not plug machine in until it has been assembled and is ready for use.
� Do not leave mop sweeper unattended (especially lying on the floor).
� Always keep the machine cable behind the machine.
� Do not allow the cable to become taut at any time.
� Whenever not in use, always leave the machine handle in the upright position.
Care of Equipment� Whenever necessary, clean mop sweeper head using vacuum cleaner.
� Store mop sweeper with head up.
� Always remove brush or drive plate and pad from under the machine after operation to prevent
them becoming distorted.
� Clean the spray bottle ensuring the nozzle is free from obstruction.
� Wash bucket, wipe inside and out, store upside down.

6. If the rotary machine is fitted with a tank, disconnect the water feed prior to buffing.
7. Prepare cleaning solution following manufacturer’s instructions (product must be added to the water).
8. Apply solution to an area of floor using the mop.
9. Mop the floor using a figure of eight stroke with each pass overlapping.
10. Leave floor as dry as possible and leave warning signs in place until dry.
11. Buff the floor using overlapping passes in order to ensure evenness in appearance.
12. Buff area adjacent to skirtings by “cutting in” parallel to them.
13. Cover the area systematically to ensure all areas are properly buffed.
14. Position the machine cable behind the line of work to ensure it is not caught in the machine drive
plate/brush or tripped over.
15. Check the pad at regular intervals and clean or turn as necessary.
16. When the task is complete, remove the plug and circuit breaker from the electricity supply, and
recoil the cable.
17. If required, mop sweep the floor after buffing.
18. Clean all equipment and check all items for safety.
15. Return all items of equipment to the storage area and store safely and securely.
Care of Equipment

Step by Step Guide
1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety, paying particular
attention to plugs and cables.
3. Place warning signs at the extremes of the work area.
4. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the machine to the
power supply.
5. Ventilate the area.
6. Pick up large items of litter by hand and mop sweep floor.
7. Prepare cleaning solution according to manufacturer’s instructions(always add product to water)
and place in the machine tank.
8. Start scrubbing the floor in the area furthest away from the door, using an overlapping pattern to
ensure the whole area is covered.
9. Scrub adjacent to skirtings by “cutting in” parallel to skirtings using edge of pad.
10. Position the cable behind the machine to ensure it is not caught up in the drive plate.
11. Check the pad/brush for damage and cleanliness regularly and turnover the pad, change or clean
as necessary.
12. Using the edging tool and abrasive pad, clean alongside walls and in corners.
13. Wipe splashes from skirtings and walls as they occur.
14. Pass wet suction machine over the area before the floor has started to dry, going from a dry area
to a wet area.
15. Place machines on the sheet of protective plastic.
16. Clean all equipment and check for safety.
17. Return all equipment, materials and warning signs to store and store safely and securely.

� Ventilate area.
� Place Warning signs at the extremes of the work area prior to the work commencing.
� Check electrical equipment particularly plugs and cables.

8. Apply stripping solution by mop over an area of about 10m2,paying particular attention to the
edges.
9. Allow to soak for about 5 minutes but do not allow to dry onto surface.
10. Commence stripping the edges first using the edging tool, paying particular attention to the
corners.
11. Start scrubbing the floor in the area furthest away from the door; using an overlapping pattern to
ensure the whole area is covered.
12. Ensure bucket is always behind line of work and machine cable is behind the machine and not
lying in water.
13. Remove slurry with the wet suction machine, starting on a dry area and moving on to a wet area.
14. Repeat steps 8-12 until the whole area has been scrubbed.
15. Check the pad/brush for damage and cleanliness regularly and turnover the pad, change or clean
as necessary.
16. After scrubbing place both machines onto protective plastic sheet.
17. Remove splashes from walls, skirtings and furniture as they occur.
18. In a mopping unit bucket prepare a solution of acetic acid in water. Rinse the floor well, then
remove liquid with wet suction machine. Check pH of floor using indicator paper. If more than 9
repeat the rinsing process and retest the pH for neutrality (pH7).
19. When the floor is neutral and clean, allow to dry.
20. Apply one coat of Acrylic Primer Seal if required (Porous Floor Surfaces) thinly and evenly using
the applicator. Start at furthest corner from the door. Avoid splashing skirtings.
21. Apply first coat of polish thinly and evenly using the applicator. Start at furthest corner from the
door. Avoid splashing skirtings.
22. Allow to dry hard.
23. Apply further coats as required allowing to dry Hard in between coats. All subsequent coats
should be applied in the opposite direction to the coat prior and starting approximately 10cm
from the skirtings.
24. Remove plug and RCD from power socket and recoil machine cable.
25. Clean all equipment and check for safety.
26. Return all equipment, materials to store and store safely and securely.
27. When floor is completely dry return warning signs to store.

Application of the Seal18. Pour seal into applicator tray and apply to edges using a paintbrush, starting furthest from door.
19. With an applicator apply 1 coat of seal thinly and evenly over the remainder of the floor.

12. When ringing out mop, stand in front of wringer and press down firmly.
13. Rinse the mop frequently, change the solution when necessary and re-charge mop with clean
solution as required.
14. Wipe skirtings with cloth to remove splashes.
15. Continue down the stairs using a deck scrubber or the edging tool, if necessary.
16. Pay particular attention to the edges, corners and risers.

4. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the machine to the

5. Remove chewing gum with scraper.
5. Pick up any large/sharp items of litter (i.e. pins and paper clips using dust pan and brush.
6. Position the cable behind the line of work to ensure it does not get caught in the brushes if using
an upright vacuum.
7. Adjust the height of the brush/beater bar to suit floor surface: where a tub vacuum is used, fit the
appropriate tool.
8. Cover area systematically, vacuuming against the direction of the carpet pile, concentrating on
heavily trafficked areas, edges and corners.
9. Using a dustpan and brush, clean all areas inaccessible by the machine, i.e. under furniture.

10. If necessary remove stains.
11. Prepare Carpet Cleaning Solution according to manufacturer’s instructions (adding agent to
water), putting some into a spray bottle and the remainder into the hot water extraction machine.
12. Prespray all heavily soiled areas.
13. Starting at an area furthest away from the door, spray in overlapping straight lanes, moving
backwards, one wet pass followed by at least three dry passes, taking care not to over wet the
carpet, working in areas of approximately 1 metre square.
14. Take care not to spray walls and furniture.
15. Clean corners and edges with cleaning solution using a hand tool or scrubbing brush.
16. Wipe skirting with cloth to remove splashes.

carpet cleaning solution as required from the tank. OR
c) Pre-wet in bucket, wring out until almost dry, to drive disc and clean carpet, washing bonnet in
carpet cleaning solution as often as necessary.
If using white Pads:
Pre-wet in bucket, affix to drive disc and clean carpet by spray cleaning using carpet cleaning solution
dispensed form hand spray.
15. Starting at an area furthest away from the door, clean in overlapping passes, to cover all the
carpet.
16. Take care not to splash walls, furniture and adjacent floors.
17. Wipe skirting with cloth to remove splashes.
18. Remove plug and circuit breaker from the power socket and recoil the machine cable.
19. After Carpet Skimming, pile brush the carpet whilst the carpet is still damp.
20. On completion return furniture to original location, placing legs on pieces of protective card/foil
or plastic.
21. Clean equipment and check for safety.

Safety First
� Ensure Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.
� Ventilate area.
� Place Warning signs at the extremes of the work area prior to the work commencing.
� Check all equipment particularly plugs and cables.
� Check if machine is fitted with a Residual Current Device (RCD).
� Ensure RCD is in power socket before inserting machine plug.
� Do not plug machines in until they have been assembled and are ready for use.
� Ensure hands are dry before plugging in machines.
� Always keep the machine cables behind the machines at all times.
� Do not allow the cables to become taut at any time.
� If possible work from ground level rather than use access equipment.
� Access equipment should be erected, checked and dismantled by a competent person only.
� Check access equipment carefully before use and when moving from one are a to another.
� If using a back vacuum cleaner ensure it is correctly strapped on.
� If using safety harness and line ensure secured safely.
� Cover electrical sockets with masking tape.

Step by Step Guide
1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety, paying particular
attention to plugs and cables.
3. Place warning signs at the extremes of the work area.
4. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the machine to the
power supply.
5. Ventilate the area.
6. Remove furniture and/or place dust covers to protect surfaces beneath the area to be cleaned.
7. Cover electrical sockets with masking tape.
8. Erect access equipment.
9. Put on back vacuum cleaner.
10. Dry clean high levels using equipment as necessary, working systematically in straight strokes and
taking care not to stir up dust.
11. Remove RCD from power socket and recoil machine cable.
12. Prepare Cleaning Solution according to manufacturer’s instructions (adding agent to water).
13. Clean area, avoiding splashing articles below and moving access equipment as required.

9. Insert Residual Current Device (RCD) into the power socket before connecting the machine to the
power supply.
10. Ventilate the area.
11. Clean the wall by either: -
a) Apply cleaning solution to the wall with cloth, sponge or trigger spray, working from bottom
to top. Allow a short time for the cleaning agent to work, then rinse-wipe the wall from top to
bottom to leave the wall as dry as possible.
Or
b) Insert RCD into a power socket, plug in a wall washing machine, and then apply cleaning
solution to the wall working from bottom to top. Allow a short time for the cleaning agent to
work, clean by machine then rinse-wipe the wall from top to bottom to leave the wall as dry as
possible.
12. Use side-to-side overlapping strokes, working in small manageable areas.
13. Remove drips and runs as they occur.
14. On completion, dismantle access equipment.
15. If applicable remove RCD from power socket and recoil machine cable.
16. Clean equipment and check for safety.
17. Return all equipment, materials and warning signs to store and store safely and securely.

7. Prepare Cleaning Solution according to manufacturer’s instructions (adding agent to water).
8. Ventilate the area.
9. Clean large panes of glass by applying cleaning solution with applicator to sides and top of
frames and in a zigzag pattern to the rest of the pane.
Remove water and dirt by either:
a) Use a well wrung leather or scrim and start at the sides and top of frame, followed by a zigzag
pattern down the frame.
Or
b) Wipe the sides and top of the frame using a well wrung leather or scrim, followed by using a
squeegee. When using a squeegee, make a vertical stroke from top to bottom at one side of
pane, then using a zigzag stroke across the pane horizontally keeping the blade at 45degrees
to the direction of travel. Move the blade horizontally in a zigzag pattern never lifting the
blade off the pane. Finally finish with a straight vertical stroke down each edge of pane. Wipe
blade with absorbent cloth after each operation.

10. Use extension pole with leather on it to dry top edge. Wipe bottom edge of pane with leather or
scrim.
11. Clean small pane windows by applying cleaning solution with an applicator to top row of panes.
Then squeegee across upper part of the windows, tilting handle slightly to push water towards
bottom of glass. Make a second pass with squeegee to remove remaining solution. With scrim
wipe dry lower moulding, then proceed to next row of panes and repeat.
12. On completion clean equipment and check for safety.
13. Return all equipment, materials and warning signs to store and store safely and securely.

Using a dry, lint free duster or static mitten, systematically dust vertical surfaces, from top tobottom and horizontal surfaces with straight, overlapping strokes.Re-fold duster as necessary to ensure that dust is not re-deposited onto cleaned surfaces.Draw dust out of corners and away from the edges of horizontal surfaces.Do not flick duster.Replace duster as necessary.

Damp Wiping:Prepare cleaning solution according to manufacturer’s instructions (always adding agent to water)Using a damp cloth wrung almost dry, wipe the surface from top to bottom, using smooth fluentstrokes.Rinse cloth in clean water as necessary, recharge with cleaning solution and wring out until almostdry.Repeat as necessary.
7. Washing:Apply cleaning solution using a cloth, then remove dirt by wiping with a cloth, turning the clothfrequently.Rinse the cloth in cleaning solution to remove dirt as often as is necessary.Apply clean rinse water and wipe dry with a clean cloth.
8. Polishing:Apply polish sparingly to a surface previously damp wiped and allowed to dry. Take care not toapply polish to any adjacent surfaces. When dry, buff to a high sheen. (If an aerosol polishcontaining silicone is to be applied to furniture ensure that the polish is applied to the duster andnot directly to the furniture in order to prevent any polish falling to the floor and causing slipperyconditions).

10. Using a white cloth check the upholstery for colour fastness, using neat cleaning agent.
11. If necessary remove stains using the stain removal kit.

Step by Step Guide1. Before entering the area put on the disposable apron and the gloves.
2. Place warning signs at the entrance of the work area to warn users of your presence.
3. Places all of the equipment within easy reach within the work area, making sure that none of it
comes into contact with the contaminated items.
4. Open the lid of the disposal carton and place it on the floor next to contaminated syringe.
5. Take the tweezers and manoeuvre the syringe into a position where you can grasp it firmly by the
body (not by the needle end).
6. Making sure that you have a firm grip on the syringe, carefully places it into the carton, taking care
to place it in needle first.
7. Once this has been done repeat the process for any additional items in the work area.
8. When you are certain that the syringes have been deposited safely inside the carton, place the
tweezers inside and close the lid, making sure that it is sealed properly and place it to one side.
9. Sprays the infected area with the antiseptic solution and wipes with the clean tissue.
10. Once all of the potentially infected area has been disinfected, dispose of the tissue in the
biohazard waste bag.
11. Remove gloves and apron and place them in the biohazard waste bag.
12. To finish, wipe your hands with an anti-septic wipe and place it in the biohazard waste bag.
13. Seal the bag and place it in the designated waste reception area.
14. Take the sharps disposal carton and arrange for its disposal in line with the relevant local
authority guidelines.
15. Return to the cubicle and clean it thoroughly as normal.
16. Remove the warning sign, return all equipment to the store and reopen the area for normal use.
17. Report the incident to your manager or supervisor.

Step by Step GuideImportant Note: If the carcass is a rat or pigeon, do not attempt to handle it. Leave it to the PestControl Officer and only carry out the clean-up procedure described in this note.
1. Before entering the work area, put the disposable apron and gloves.
2. Places warning signs at the extremes of the work area to warn people of your presence.
3. Place all of your equipment within easy reach, taking care that none of it comes into contact with
the area from which the carcass has been found.
4. Taking the spatula and scoop, remove the carcass carefully, taking care that it does not come into
contact with any exposed skin. (for large insects, use the tweezers) and place it, along with the
spatula and scoop, into the biological waste bag.
5. Once the carcass has been removed, using a scrubbing brush, apply bactericidal cleaning solution
to the area, rotationally scrubbing the area where the carcass was found.
6. Soak up the waste solution using absorbent tissue and deposit it in the waste bag.
7. Once the area is relatively dry, apply the antiseptic solution by spraying the affected area
thoroughly and allow to dry naturally, before wiping with absorbent tissue and depositing in the
waste bag.
8. Clean the whole room thoroughly in the usual way using appropriate equipment and techniques
normal equipment.
9. Before finishing place your apron and gloves in the waste bag.
10. Wipe your hands thoroughly with the ant-septic wipe and place it the waste bag.
11. Seal the waste bag and place it in the designated area ready for collection.
12. Reopen the room and return all equipment, including the warning sign to the storage area.

the stain to be cleaned.
4. Standing over the stain, take the absorbent granule container and sprinkle it liberally over the
stain, making sure it is completely covered.
5. After giving the granules time to absorb the majority of the liquid, check that it has been drawn
from the carpets and is beginning to take a more solid form.
6. Once you are satisfied, take the cardboard spatula and agitate the stain. Using the cardboard
spatula and working from the outside of the stain in, scrape the residue into the scoop and place
it into the waste bag. Place the scoop and spatula in the bag for disposal.
7. After taking as much of the stain up as possible, take up the rest of the powder using the dry
cleaning cloth and dispose of it in the waste bag.
8. Once the majority of the stain has been removed, spray the area liberally with the anti-septic
solution and allow a couple of minutes for it to act.
9. Taking another clean cloth dry the area and dispose of it in the waste bag.
10. Before finishing place apron and gloves in the waste bag.
11. Wipe your hands thoroughly with the ant-septic wipe and place it the waste bag.
12. Seal the waste bag and place it in the designated area ready for collection.
13. Reopen the room and return all equipment, including the warning sign to the storage area.

Step by Step Guide1. Put on Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Assemble all of the equipment to be used and check each item for safety.
3. Place warning signs at extremes of work area.
4. Ventilate area.
5. Switch off power & remove plug from the powers ocket.
6. Drain Fat into a waste container and wipe away any residual grease using disposable paper tissue.
7. Fill fryer with a solution of water and cleaner degreaser, following manufacturer’s instructions,
always adding agent to water.
8. Submerge all baskets and utensils in the solution.
9. Switch on and boil.
10. Check on progress of cleaning and switch off when satisfied.
11. Remove any film or deposits from the inside of the fryer with a brush or spatula and deposit in a
waste food bin.
12. Empty the fryer and rinse thoroughly with clean hot water and allow to air dry.
