Emotional Intelligence in Relationships: Rewiring Emotions in Couples Therapy
Brent Atkinson, Ph.D.
Presented byFoundation for the Contemporary Family andUCI Family Therapy Training ProgramDepartment of Psychiatry & human behaviorUniversity of California, Irvine
Training Director, Judith Zucker Anderson, Ph.D.
Once couples leave therapy and face the slings and arrows of intimate partnership on their own, they all too readily revert back to their deeply conditioned, default brain states and relapse into old patterns. Why does this happen so often? Provocative neuroscience studies suggest that the missing link lies within the emotional brain. For changes acquired in therapy to last, they must be integrated into brain states that become active when upsetting situations occur. Unless intimacy-inducing states are activated, the next time their partners are critical or attacking, clients are apt to flip back into the neural safety zone of anger or fear—in a nanosecond. We therapists need to turn our energies toward helping couples gain some control over their natural neural turbulence, by teaching them how to “brain shift” from defensive mood states to intimacy-generating ones.
Dr. Atkinson will present his innovative, step-by-step Pragmatic/Experiential couples therapy approach that translates recent advances in neurobiology and the science of intimacy into practical strategies for helping clients improve their relationships. Therapists will learn how to help couples identify internal states which perpetuate reactive thoughts, attitudes, and behavior; “re-wire” these states for more flexibility, and activate alternate states which support new avenues for thinking, feeling and interaction.
Workshop objectives
Participants will learn how to:• use practical knowledge from neuroscience to enhance their
couples therapy skills• short-circuit internal states that sabotage a couple’s ability to
think and act in ways that are necessary for relationship success • facilitate couple’s brain states that more naturally lead to
intimacy and connection • help couples develop the motivation and ability to do this on
their own away from the safe haven of therapy
About the PresenterEmotional Intelligence in Relationships, Part One:
Rewiring Emotions in Couples Therapy
Day 1
Friday, April 30, 2010 9:00 to 4:30 6.5 CE hours
Building on the basic understanding of the Pragmatic/Experiential Method of Couples Therapy, Dr. Atkinson will demonstrate methods that integrate new neuroscience information with findings about specific interpersonal habits necessary for relationship success. Each of these interpersonal abilities are state-specific—that is, they can happen only when we are in a particular mood or state of mind (we all know that “I” statements work only when the person making them has the right attitude). Dr. Atkinson will clearly articulate how to short circuit internal states that sabotage the ability to think and act in ways that are necessary for relationship success. He will show how to stimulate internal states that naturally lead to intimacy and connection and illustrate specific interventions in greater detail, using extensive video examples from couples therapy sessions. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions about the ingredients that make these interventions so effective and how best to implement them.
Included will be methods for helping couples: [1] experience release from long-standing resentments; [2] engage in healing conversations about past hurts; [3] get serious about the task of acquiring the emotional habits necessary for their relationships to succeed; and [4] recondition their brains to reactivate the neocortex in the face of strong emotion.
Workshop objectives
Participants will learn skills for helping couples to: • think clearly when they are in the grips of emotional states that
seemed to preclude clear thinking• understand the interpersonal prerequisites for having a
successful, long-term intimate relationship• practice these skills under “game conditions” that will enable
them to react more flexibly when upsets occur• develop partner-friendly attitudes that evoke his/her partner to
treat him/her better• increase activation of brain states that naturally produce
feelings of tenderness, sexual interest, playfulness and the desire for emotional closeness
Brent Atkinson, Ph.D., is the principle architect of P r a g m a t i c / E x p e r i e n t i a l Therapy for Couples, an approach that translates new scientific findings about the brain into practical methods for improving relationships. Dr. Atkinson is author of Developing Habits for Relationship Success, and
Emotional Intelligence in Couples Therapy: Advances from Neurobiology and the Science of Intimate Relationships. He is Director of Post-Graduate Training at the Couples Research Institute in Geneva, Illinois and holds a senior graduate faculty post at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Atkinson’s pioneering work has been the subject of dozens of professional journal articles, and has recently been featured in magazines and newspapers such as O, the Oprah Magazine, the Washington Post, Cosmopolitan Magazine, the Psychotherapy Networker, and others. A personable and engaging speaker, Dr. Atkinson is known for his ability to present complex scientific ideas in compelling and easy-to-understand ways. His seminars are packed with cutting-edge information, practical interventions, and handouts that can be given to clients. Please visit www.thecouplesclinic.com.
