Required Summer Reading
Name: _________________
As the school year comes to an end, teachers are grateful for the strides students have made in read-ing this past school year. We want to maintain the en-thusiasm and interest in literature over the summer as well.
Enclosed you will find a required summer reading list and reading logs for students entering fifth grade in September. This list is a guide or a starting place for students. Students may read the books on the attached list or may read other literature based on his/her interest and/or reading level.
We are requiring each child read a minimum of two chapter books over the summer, either with an adult or independently. For each of the books the student reads, he/she will need to complete a reading log entry. Students will also need to complete ONE of the reading projects attached to this packet.
Students will need to hand in two reading logs and one reading project on the first day of the 2015-16 school year. These items will be used as a grade for the first two homework assignments and the first project/test assignment.
We look forward to seeing you in September.
Have a Wonderful Summer and

Finding Lexile Levels
Finding the Lexile Level of any book is fairly simple. If you’re not sure if a book is at your lev-el, go to www.scholastic.com. In the top right corner of the screen you will see a link called Book Wizard.
Click on this link, and then type in the title or author of the book you are looking to find. This will give you the Lexile or A-Z level of the book title.

Summer Project Choices…
Choose one of the books you read over the summer and
complete one of the three project/writing assignments listed below.
You may choose which project you would like to complete.
1. Write a book review for one of the books you read. This should include a summary of the book, the main plot, the theme of the book, as well as why others should read this book (or not). This review should be between 4-6 paragraphs.
2. Create a book cover for one of the books you read as if you designed the cover. You can use any materials you want (pastels, colored pencils, etc.) for the illustration as you make the book cover interesting to the reader. Re-member to include the title and author on the cover. On the back tell why you want kids to read/buy this book.
3. Write an extension to the book you read. You can write another chapter or a sequel to the book. What will happen next in the book you read? Will there be a new problem? Be creative and have fun!
Happy Reading!!
